My grandmother grew up there. She saw your video and was amazed to see her home town again. She said that the old building you said was the teacher's college was actually the primary school. Unfortunately she doesn't know what it was before the school, maybe it could have been a teacher's college in the early days of the town. Thanks for your video! 😃

Fauresmith is an appealing town - and must have been even prettier in its prime. I am as intrigued by the railway line running through the centre of the main road as you were. Only one of three, globally - thanks for that nugget of information, Sonia! My first thought was, “I wonder how that worked with children and animals!” So it was good to hear only a sole Rooster suffered an untimely death in all the years that this track was operational. Rather remarkable!
This certainly was a very enjoyable visit, thank you both 🙏🏻😊

We were rather taken with the town ourselves, it's neat and pretty with interesting stories to tell and those are all things we love about a place, so Fauresmith ticked a lot of boxes. We felt quite sorry for the poor rooster, but what a safety record if he was the only casualty. Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip to Fauresmith! 🐓🚂

As a very small boy, I was there with my parents one day and was told to be careful, as a train was coming down the street. In my juvenile mind, I decided that adults were insane, as who in his right mind would drive trains where little boys had to walk. The thing blew off steam as it passed me and annoyed this then toddler. That is where I started questioning the sanity of grown-ups. Nowadays, I sometimes see a train on UA-cam as it passes through that American town; also the little puffer at Darjeeling in India. There may be more than three such towns, one must investigate.
Fauresmith is home to great equestrian endurance rides, for the record, and there typically is an international horse-riding event annually. Friends and relatives participated in such endurance rides

I could'nt find anything about a train down the centre of the main road in Darjeeling though, but could've easily missed it. 🤷🏼‍♂️🚂

Another interesting fact is that there was a private primary school "Skynkaroo kollege" in the old railway houses for a couple of years. The platform where you parked your car was the remains of the shed they used as a school hall. Unfortunately they had to close down round about 2014/15

Correction: there are quite a few towns where the railway line goes through the middle of the town, several in Queensland, Australia, for instance Rockhampton, and one or two others further north. Otherwise a very interesting series, especially for me as I was born and grew up in Southern Africa and emigrated to Australia in 1969, and find it interesting to see what has become of these lovely little country towns that were clean and prosperous in days gone by with not quite so many potholes in the roads nor derelict abandoned buildings. I transcribed at least one of them and posted it to the South African Usenet group, long ago, imagining it would be safe for many years, there. @@DustBugsTravel He told things like the story of how their local cricket club would prepare a pitch rich in rocks for the game against the neighbouring town, and then lose the toss, because the person who was meant to rig it messed up - and the disaster that followed. (And another cricket story was about how he got Johannes the shepherd to give him batting practice by bowling for him, and of course Johannes turned out to be a natural Harold Larwood - or a Makhaya Ntini, and how he had to plot and scheme to survive his batting practice.)
I think he had a theory that the reason you'll always see sheep with their heads facing each other in the fields was that they were discussing among themselves which one was going to be the next to die.
My grandfather had a few of his books (and AFAIK my brother has now lost them all, which is a pity).
I tell the stories too badly, but the way he told them, they were hilarious. (Always tales of ruin and defeat, yet somehow really funny.)

I was drawn to the idea of railway through the center of town and seeing a steam train in the middle of the town. However I decided on a different route as it would have meant a six hour detour without needing to back track on an already driven route, however may included it as a visit when going to Niewoudtville next year or the year after...

In 1847 the Governor of the Cape, Sir Harry Smith gave Dominee Faure instruction to established a new town. First erven was sold in 1849. Philippolis is the oldest town in OFS, then Winburg (established by Voortrekker Hendrik Potgieter in 1837. Town number 4 is Bloemfontein in 1848, by Resident Major Warden, bought from Nicolaas Johan BRITS. Famous people from Fauresmuth was NC (Klasie) Havenga, b 1882, secretary of General JBM Hertzog in ABW2 and a minister later years in his cabinet.
