Hey guys! You asked for a tutorial discussing the setup of an Xbox controller for the TEDAC in the DCS AH-64D Apache, so here it is! Hope this helps you guys out.
I use JoyToKey which is a portable freeware that requires no installation and you only have to run in the background when you play DCS. It can map axes to keyboard keys. Also it can do an "A-10"-style mapping by which I mean you can define different keys to be pressed depending on pressing a joystick/gamepad button for a short or long time. This essentially doubles the number of buttons without having to use modifier keys.
Just over 12mths into using DCS and I'm only now learning about modifiers. 😃 Just re-set up my HOTAS and got an after market X-Box controller; all working great. Thanks Spudknocker! 👌🏻
I'm pretty sure there is lots of stuff/features that Eagle Dynamics started to code and forgot to do; i encounter while playing with mods in lua scriptings.
@6:16 you said you were going to bring up a graphic of a xbox to show the KEYS you were refering to...what happened? IF you had been able to do that this tutorial would have been a 200 out of 100 :) i was NOT a gammer so no clue what KEY #'s controllers are..:( graphic would sure have been helpful for people like me. Thanks tho for all the time and help !!
soon as i heard about this idea last week i tried it out it was perfect yesterday to use. Had a ball great idea.. didnt use modifier just used hotas joy infront for weapon select. L1 = laser R1 = Fire left stick = mfd curser and enter right stick = tad slew and whot/blkhot up = zoom down = wide left = tad right = chd Y = stabilize x = slave b = increase lev a= decrease lev start = normal zoom menu = other zoom hotas warthog joystick = weapon select on DMS switch
This is one the most "direct to user benefit" AH-64 tip/tweak videos I've seen yet. Awesome-sauce, dude. Thanks for the tip!!! Rocking the Xbox controller in the CPG seat and really digging it.
I just got one of those, and I'm going to map it with your very helpful guidance. Saraph in Hebrew is a warrior angel, Those that are described in the Bible at Gods sides. It is exactly what the AH64D was for us tank crews in the mid 90s in lebanon, no Hizbulla ATGM crews could sneak up on us when one of those hovered overhead. Thanks again for this video.
I use reWASD (14 euros) for my Xbox Elite 2 controller, it allows me to map the paddles as separate keybinds, it also allows me to short and long button presses, for example D-pad up short zooms the tedac, up long Waz the gun.
Thanks for the video! I kept meaning to setup my xbox controller for the TEDAC, just keep putting it off - and now you have exactly what I need that will help! One thing, didn't you say in the beginning of the video that you were going to put up a graphic of the controller so we're not just looking at button numbers, etc? Maybe I misunderstood that...but thanks for the detailed video!
If you use a software called joy to key, it’s free, you can map the triggers to keys and use those. You can also do the other joystick as a was, weapon selection switch.
@@Spudknocker umm, I think it has to run in the background and by that I mean like either minimized or even closed out but still open in task tray by like the volume controls, you know, the little arrow. But I don’t think it permanently remaps the button. It just binds it to a key so you can use the triggers and axis for stuff.
Just if people don't know and before hemorrhaging $60 plus for an original Xbox controller with an USB-Adapter, there are plenty of "Game Controllers" available starting from below $15 to $30 or more, that are built for the PC, basically the same as an Xbox controller, minus the "rumble", Bluetooth and usually with buttons on the index fingers rather than additional axis. Search your typical resellers, eBay, or chinese importers. There is even a Thrustmaster Gamepad available. 😎
Joytokey also works for trigger axis to buttons. My xbox controller is configured but preferring using the stick on a 10cm extension much more accurate.
I need to give that a try. I setup Joystick Gremlin and even managed to setup both triggers as dual stage triggers on my Xbox controller, but DCS doesn't detect the key presses unless I've clicked into the Joystick Gremlin window, which obviously doesn't work with DCS, because then I'm not controlling anything in DCS. It's very weird, but maybe I'll have better luck with JoytoKey.
@@aaronwhite1786 tried booting as admin? I haven't come across this issue at all seems to work as long as it's open for me. Use it in iracing and dcs all the time.
@@gibilator Yeah, I gave that a shot when I found it somewhere. Sadly, no luck there. It's just the weirdest thing. The buttons on the Xbox controller work in DCS just fine, but the ones mapped to vjoy don't work until I click out and into the Joystick Gremlin window.
I have a Playstation 5 controller and use it for my TEDAC. I can't verify for earlier versions of the controllers, but I didn't require any special software. The only thing that doesn't work is the trackpad.
If you guys have a warthog and want to nearly double or triple your available binds, set a switch on the throttle as a modifier, whenever it's active I have it so that my keyboard works as the KU interface, much easier and quicker inputting of provided coordinates and I have literally everything bound on my hocas Be sure to include it under Switch if you want to make it toggleable, as for with a physical switch
Oh btw Spud, WAS - Air to Air is meant for stingers. This version of the Apache will not be getting them. See page 73 of the DCS AH-64D manual to confirm that "A (Air-to-Air, aft) has No Function
@@Tigermoto glad to hear my layout is still helping people out! Hey, give piloting the Apache a shot with a gamepad! You never know man, maybe it's even easier haha
Antimicro is your friend for binding the triggers as buttons, it's free and super easy to set up - at least that's what I use on my Xbox controller setup
One word of warning though, when you plug an Xbox controller in DCS will default a bunch of (pitch, roll and yaw) axis commands to all flyable aircraft, as these axis inputs on the controller are not very accurate they can overide the inputs from your dedicated HOTAS controller, it's best then to either set a deadzone for the Xbox controller axis or delete the catagory as a whole.
Why not just post a layout? Also you talk about an overlay we never get to see. ANd then start telling us what buttons to map where and then stop telling us.
For ppl with a thirdparty PS 4 controller: Its not needed to have an original Xbox controller though. I thought that too first for the last years but 2 weeks ago i accidentally plugged in my third party PS4 controller for Elden Ring and everything worked 100% fine. You may be right with an original PS controller from Sony it may require a software. But if one has some thirdparty PS controller i would first try it. Mine works flawlessly, without doing anything. Even in steam games with Steam only controller support its immediately recognized as a normal controller. The brand i have is NACON PS4 controller, wired. That one works on a PC without installing anything.
@@konstantinoschatziioannou3833 I'm not sure if you guys have figured it out yet or not, but I believe he is using an Xbox Elite controller with the paddles.
Just for clarification. DS5 controller working flawlessly with Steam without having to use 3rd party software. Otherwise very useful tip of how to quickly copy pilot controls to CP/G. Big thanks for that.
What I’ve done is set up a modifier for a switch that I’m using that can toggle the HOTAS between being used as a TEDAC or HOCAS. The control is a bit easier with a joystick than a mini stick since I haven’t used an Xbox controllers for FPS since the 90s.
if you want to use a ps4 controller either use DS4 Windows or do what I do (Only for DCS Standalone. A ps4 controller will work without any setup with Steam edition). If you have DCS Standalone, add the game to your Steam library by pressing "add a game" in the bottom left. Then click "add a non-steam game" and find your DCS .exe file. Now open DCS through steam and you will find your ps4 controller will work perfectly!!
@@Taxpayer_416 sure thing mate - downloaded JoyToKey - and bound the triggers to be single button keyboard commands - bound them to 2nd detent as 1st isn't 100% required to operate so - it doesn't turn it into a new joy button, it makes that signal from the controller activate a keystroke - if you get what I mean, then just assign it to something on the keyboard you don't use, then bind that into the TEDAC settings

DCS recognizes a PS4 controller and is completely plug and play. That's not the case however for all games, some games do require 3rd party software to recognize the PS4 controller. I play DCS exclusively with a PS4 controller, though one day I do wish to get a joystick, throttle and pedals because the Apache is difficult to fly with just a controller.
3:41 Probably the F-15E next... :) 5:13 I did that in the past and made the thumbsticks trigger button presses like a dpad. Requires Autohotkey scripting, which takes quite some time to get into. You basically have to monitor the axes constantly and put in lines that are like "if the axis goes above 80%, shell out button X once". 6:12 Am I missing something? Can't see it. (I have one, so not a problem for me actually)
I've had a few times when flying the Apache on target runs where I signal George to shoot hellfire missiles and he won't. The game signals as though it has received the command and he says "firing" and "engaging" but the box on the IHAD never appears and says msl not rdy on Mfd. Did I accidently click on something that changed this? Any help would be greatly appreciated
thx for the inside. Im trying to get it done. At 9:30 min i can't see what button to select. Is there a download place where i could be downloading this little handy xbox file? My eyes get old and lazy peeps, sorry...
Just an PSA I did this at first and the controller was cluttered with all the modifiers. In which I had to look at my notes for what each modifier does. Not really proficient IMO. What I ended up doing was this. If you are using a hotas you can go to the controls> modifiers, and in the box on the right is a switch box. Hi, is there any advantage in using TWS mode over RWS for AIM 120 C in F16 when it is 1 on 1? The HSD info about the target is the same , is not it? Thank you
I am setting this up right now, and a few of the buttons are cut off and you havent given the buttons verbally. Other than that great video, I'm sure I can figure out what is cut off, just a small gripe.
I really appreciate the tutorial because it is difficult to find controller guides for this vehicle but my goodness what is up with this video, lol. "Let me pull up an xbox controller layout so you can see what all this means" Doesn't pull up controller layout then continues to not explain some of the buttons in relation to the bindings. Some of them can't be figured out because they are too long and they don't stay within the mapping category. Can you edit the description to include the actual mappings or something, please? Would be really helpful.
Will be interesting to see how this setup develops as more and more TEDAC related systems come online. Once the FCR is in, I can easily see a controller running out of buttons.

In the controls screen, you can see a blue button in the bottom left that says 'Modifiers'. Add one of your joystick buttons to either of the columns and rebind anywhere it's used as a solo button for it to function.
