Awesome review thanks! I bought a Futurelight cap to try out the fabric & my feeling is it's more of a softshell fabric than Gore-Tex replacement. It's my new go-to winter hat for rainy relatively warm hikes in the PNW because it breaths so much better than the Gore-Tex OR cap I had been wearing. But if it's actually raining, I have my hood on, so the cap isn't my primary waterproof layer, that's my Arc'teryx shell (which is Gore-Tex & has definitely kept me dry when it's pouring all day!)
Thank you so much for checking out my channel and the feedback! As spring progresses I have more testing to do but I agree with you. It isn't my main coat on long extended hikes in wet PNW/Alaskan weather. Which does disappoint me because of off the specs. I haven't tried Arc'teryx yet, but mainly because I feel it has been tested alot. Never know what the future hold!
Just found your video! Regarding being soaked you need to apply Nikwax (tx direct) on the jacket every 2/3 months during usage. No need to apply when the jacked is in storage :) Hope you read this!
Suuuuper helpful! I've tried to research on what I could use! With it not being Gore Tex I didn't want to Damage anything. Thank so much! Perhaps an update video would be handy after I try the Nikwax. Cause it soaks thru so fast in our rain.
I love the color of the jacket! Reminds me of the alpha fl, so an emergency alpine shell. In terms of you getting soaked on your hike. One thing I've consistently struggled to find information about is how waterproof futurelight is. Something tells me their hesitance to disclose it means it's significantly lower than say gore-tex.
The unconfirmed word on the street (I can't verify) is a hydrostatic head of 16,000 mm for waterproof rating. Once the face fabric wets out it does soak thru. Especially on the high use areas like shoulders.
@@MarissaCollison Probably why there hasn't been a version aimed at hiking/backpacking then! All others are either aimed at quick trips or dry/cold conditions. Guess you can't really return it, can you?
@@HolybasilYT Bingo! I think you could be right. I definitely would not consistently hike in crappy weather but would like to know it could hold up. I noticed all the tests were in pristine winter weather. Not the kind that I experience in Southeast Alaska.
Did you consider the Dryzzle from North Face? It has your missing pockets, the same weight as the Summit L5, and about half the price. Both use Futurelight. Not sure why the Summit L5 is so expensive?
I hadn't heard of that jacket. Ican certainly check it out! I try to do as much research as I can on the products I purchase. And so much surrounding this line had it really talked up. I just bought a Daehli jacket for $180 and its as good, even better than the L5. Got some 3 new coats to review for the fall.
I was thinking of getting the dryzzle too but Im worried about the durability and packability. I think with regards to the price diff its about durability and the technical aspect of the jacket. The summit series is designed for alpinism and mountaineering so it is the most durable, waterproof, and lightweight shell TNF could make. The l5 has no pockets probably to accommodate a harness something like that just becomes a nuisance for most people. However the Dryzzle seems to be just a rain coat and the weight, durability, and features reflect that.
@@conanshing778 I appreciate your comment!! I believe you so correct on the mountaineering aspect of the performance. At the time I purchased there was so much about the waterproof and breathability and not much about the fine lines of the activities. I bought it based on the nano technology claims and my highest price point. There is still little to no info on the specs and if I can spray it with tech wash. I would hate to mess up the technology since it isn't a true gore-tex.
I'm wearing the Norrøna Trollveggen 40L in the hiking shots. ua-cam.com/video/6tRgRdjPIy4/v-deo.html is the link to my review on it. @@MarissaCollison we get heavy rains. Sometimes hours of light to normal rain. So im excited to try this on our next rain forest hike. Will it survive the potential 4hrs of constant rain? I’ll find out this april.
I didn't find the comparison you mentioned of this with the Norrona. Do you think any of their futurelite range would be good for skiing? I had Arctyrex sabre 80 denier pants and managed to put holes in both pairs after 2 ski seasons. I like light and soft clothes but then something like the alpha sv could be a little / way more durable.
The comparison video hasn't happened yet. Honestly I am going to compare it to a jacket that is a closer price comparison and material. The Futurelight LT L5 Jacket I have is a very lightweight jacket and you may need a heavier material for skiing. I haven't had a chance to feel the other Futurelight products. I do love the feel and movement of this jacket which is why I continue to wear it. However the waterproofness is not there at all. The Alpha SV would be a better choice.
Hallo , I have a L5 not LT version and cannot complain about waterproof issue , yes ... maybe is not like gore-tex but..... I don't understand why people non stop complaining about missing pockets , this is mountaineering jacket the purpose is different of just hiking around the woods in bad weather, if you want pockets buy drizzle or apex flex , when you wear a back back how you reach pocket (when yous hips stings of the backpack) napoleon pockets on the chest have different purpose and you have full control on them. I love summit series ,yes the quality is not the best I don't know why for that price range they have to be bulletproof but .... TNF. I'm using L1 synthetic bqce layer , l2 power grid and L3 50/50 down + l5. And can say is very nice combo for almost everything , as support shell I have stratos this is tnf model in Europe. Over all L5 is too expensive im agree and you have to year helmet ⛑ for better fit because the hood is bigger then LT. I hope to last around 4-5 years 😀
Thank you so much for your feedback! I agree mountaineer gear is a bit different than backpacking. Still bring accustomed to the differences. Buying offline here where I live and not being able to really touch or look at a product beforehand can get tricky. Again, I really appreciate your knowledge!
@@MarissaCollison Overall amazing review 👌, very good job. About waterproof rating how was said from tnf expert : the best we can afford for that high level of breathability 😀 for 80k vapor rate maybe 🤔 waterproof rating is not that great as we all wanted and that price 650 $ , but keep the job done 😉. Maybe if they lower the vapor the and make waterproof rate to .... 30k will be amazing but I cannot imagine how expensive will be 😀
Great review, you mentioned that you were soaked ? You mean did the rain went through the material? Was it sweat ? Btw i got exactly the same jacket two weeks ago .
It was soaked. I had put my puffy on 2 hours into the hike and by the time we got to the truck 2 hours later nothing on me was dry. How's your coat doing?
@@waxonwaxoff6094 Where do you live? I am in a rainforest, but NOT tropical by any means. I hope that your Futurelight stands up better to rain than mine. Our rainfall is so much heavier than most anywhere and can be days on end with no stop.

Not sure about this jacket I like it but in the Uk it’s £625 which is a lot of money am looking to be completely dry for that kinda of money no compromise not for a jacket over 6 ton also there trying in my opinion to copy Haglofs lim jacket( lim meaning less is more )in the minimalist design I live in the highlands of Scotland and when it rains it Rains I love the look of it but at end of the day I want to be completely dry and not sure if this jackets offers this and I’ve a few of the Haglofs lim series jackets which work and there not cheap but still a good bit cheaper than this jacket which is very expensive and might not keel you dry
If you need to stay dry this is not the jacket. It is very light and easy-to-pack. But at the price you're better off with something heavier. I would love to try a Haflog! It is on my list of top things to test. Thanks for commenting and watching my review!
