My go-to is the Eddie Bauer hooded MicroTherm jacket. It’s thin, lightweight, and incredibly warm. It has breathable/flexible side panels, which help regulate temp extremely well, and improve mobility. Packs into chest pocket, and is water resistant. Plus, it comes in far more colors than many of the others presented, and they’re frequently on sale! Right now, $194 (down from ($259). I’ve never had an EB jacket that I regretted purchasing. I wear this jacket frequently in Seattle, in all weather, and recently wore it on a trip to Fairbanks in the fall.
My favourite packable puffer jacket is my Rab Altus jacket. I scored it on discount at my favourite outdoor outlet shop here in Melbourne, Australia. I've taken it on trips to Scotland in winter and it held up so well. I've had it for quite a few years and it still looks like new. I love that it's synthetic instead of down so that if I get caught in a downpour without my raincoat it won't get damaged. :)
About 2 years ago, I purchased a no-name puff jacket and was sceptical but needed a light travel cold weather jacket. I was so surprised on how well it performed keeping me warm. I ended giving to a friend traveling to Swiss Alps in the summer. It was really appreciated. Definitely a staple item. Thanks for the brand reviews and discount offer as well. 💚

I've been wearing the REI Co-op puffer jacket recently. At only $99, you can't gripe about the price. It's been doing a good job of keeping me warm here in Monument Valley UT this winter. It lacks some of the features seen in the more expensive jackets from this video and maybe I'd notice the difference if it got really cold. But I've found it adequate so far.
Jack Wolfskin fairmont jacket works great. Rds cert down. Somewhat ripstop material. Cinches at bottom. Very light. Packs up only so so though. Super super warm. A great purchase for me.
Shockingly I got a nice one at Walmart for $20 a few years ago and it has been great. It folds up into a small bag and is breathable and water resistant. Ive worn it in -30°C up to 10°C and never felt cold or too hot. I guess I lucked out.

I never bought one because in Norway where i live there is always a high chance of rain, until the weather dips below zero. So i always thought why not wear a rain jacket and a sweater until winter and then a big down jacket in winter. But then i saw my mother bring one on our trip to Italy in October, in a small pocket that took no space at all. I always thought a fleece would be much more comfy, but yesterday i tried one on and damn. It was also 2 degrees and i was just wearing my t shirt and jacket so i bought it😂 It still feels like a weird clothing item tho as you still need a rain jacket, so you have to wear two jackets.

I have synthetic TNF thermoball however the goose down material is more breathable. TNF triclimate future light has an inner thermoball shell thats made with goose down.

Rab G zero down jacket is the best with 1000 fill power. I live in chicago and I only wear a tshirt under that jacket in a 10 degrees weather and still feel super warm
The micro puff is pluma fill, so like all synthetics it doesn’t really have a fill power rating. It basically replaced the ultra light down jackets which were 800 fill, but according to Patagonia it’s comparable warmth to the regular down sweater. It’s been said the better synthetics are comparable to 700 fp down. Another thing is the quicker heat, synthetics have that “instant warm” sensation down doesn’t have if you’re already cold when putting it on. Both will work but down takes longer to rev up, and any body vapor you put out will contribute to loft reduction the longer you have it on and remain active On another note they never said pluma fill isn’t “as good” as down, to the contrary in one of the primo vids it’s said “light years ahead of down”...but to its credit down has the best warmth to weight of any insulation, it’s more packable, and more durable (synthetics lose loft over time if repeatedly compressed)...but it’s worthless if wet, and the best hydrophobic down treatments aren’t that great...and note how they briefly had the Encapcil treated down around 2013 in a belay parka that was 1000fp (an industry first) but it’s hard to charge more for rarer “humane” down when it’s worthless when wet, and plumafill is proprietary so no need to outsource.
I have a hydrophobic down jacket from Rab and it's really great imho. I've worn it under a lot of medium rains and some hard rains and water did not penetrate the outer layer, feathers also did not clump.

I purchased two down jackets last year. OR Illuminate jacket and Arc'teryx Cerium SL hoody. Both are minimalist jackets, however the Cerium jacket is head and shoulders a better jacket in my opinion. It felt warmer, better fit, and a better feel to it in my hands. I'm not knocking the Illuminate jacket. OR makes great products and I own more then a few of their items. However the Cerium SL was exactly what I was looking for in a light weight down jacket. I generally wear it as an outer layer when out for a walk, and it also makes a great midlayer when I'm out snow boarding. The only down side to the Cerium is the price compared to other jackets in this product range.
Great comparison here, Sheldon. Thanks for sharing! We're big fans of the Arc'teryx Cerium SL Hoody too. - that CANADA GOOSE deserves a second look!! -it combines 2 things in one = down jacket with a stretchy long sleeve work out shirt
Canada goose kill wolves so I’m out
@@ran6974 ??????
$650 !!
I just got my first puffer from MEC for only 75 CAD.
If you were exploring the lightest options, definitely missed out on the EE Torrid Apex at only 8.4oz for a men's medium.
At a little more than 10.5oz, the Feathered Friends EOS is also missing from this list. Definitely a consideration here with its 900+ fill.
Not a bad list but definitely missing on some good options.
Puffer my favorite 😍😍😍

I bought a northface thermoball jacket right before a 2 week trip to Japan in the winter. While it was warm I'm disappointed in the quality. It's already beginning to fray/threads coming loose. I haven't even used it in sports/activity yet, just walking around.
It's a very long video but interesting and enjoyable
Packable puffs for the win
🤜💥🤛
How about the ones from Uniqlo and Decathlon...
Hey there! We have the Uniqlo Ultra Light Down Jacket as well. I'll drop a link below!

Great video! What size were you wearing on the Canada Goose jacket? And what are your measurements??
Can anybody recommend puffer jackets for Big and Tall people none of these go above 2XL
Try the Stone Glacier puffy. It is treated goose down making the insulation waterproof.
I get the concept but delicate and expensive doesn't fit my day-to-day.
Great video. I've been soldering on with an Amazon synthetic filled one that's been surprisingly good, but I also recently picked up one from Huckberry with down. Only downside to that one is that it doesn't compress down, but sometimes you can't have everything.
"Down" in the Comments Below. I see what you did there!
Actually, I really like the Eddie Bower Evertherm. No baffles but still down, packable and on sale you can get it for $100.
That's a great jacket Roger-and a solid price, too!
- Tom
@@PackHacker- Eddie Bower has some great end of season sales. I have the 30oz version. They make a 60oz version for women as well. Or they did.
Review Black ember Shadow please
Hi from the UK, I've been using a Buffalo mountain shirt for years in sub zero conditions, I don't really take my down at all.
Hey, thanks for sharing your experience here! It sounds like you've really put that shirt to the test, glad to hear you've found a system that works for you.
- Rebecca
I've had a buffalo special 6 shirt for 25 years and the pertex outer shell is great (windproof and shower proof) but a down jacket weighs a fraction
Our content creator, Mark has been testing this jacket out for the last month and was pretty impressed with the warmth-to-weight ratio, so it's great to hear that it's working well for you too.
You can check out Mark's thoughts on this jacket here: packhacker.com/travel-gear/arcteryx/cerium-lt-hoody/

Could you please do a review of the Uniqlo Ultra Light Down Packable jackets? I wanted to know if its worth the price. Thanks so much. :)
Has anyone used any products from Outdoor Vitals? I know they have a synthetic puffer and I've seen a ton of their ads, but really know nothing about their stuff except what is in the ads.
Decathlon MT100. Those who know
Shame you did not mention the forclaz TREK 100 series down jackets.
I recommend the recently released J68-PL from Acronym
Have you tried any jackets from the company called "Cumulus"?
The "Primelite pullover"
85g down weight
850 fill power
Jacket Weight 180g
Here in the UK for £125
Is that a Merrell brand same as the shoe co. If yes that's a pricey brand, not a $12 brand. I'm a fan of Merrell shoes and have several pairs, none of which cost less than $100.
Just wondering if you can help; I'm on the search for a super lightweight packable rain jacket that has a zipper to integrate a puffer like these. Basically a 3 in 1, but super compact for full-time travel. All the 3 in 1's I find are too big a bulky. Do you know of any?
jacks r better stealth quilt, a sleep system that doubles as a poncho.....replacing the puffy....
Zip garage. These words please me somehow ...
Hello. What do you think is the main difference between uniqlo and fjalraven ultra light puffers? because price difference is extreme.
Is there a recommendation for a 4XL Mens packable puffer?
I wish you would review Fjallraven puffers. Maybe you did and I didn't see it😎😎😎
Hey David! We haven't reviewed any yet
but I'll pass it along to the team for consideration. Thanks for the comment!

Just dont be poor
I love this channel...have you guys thought about a podcast?
Thanks Ben - great to hear! We've kicked around the idea of a podcast-at the moment, we are pretty focused on video & written posts on our site for now. If we moved forward with one, what topics would you like to see covered in audio format?
- Tom
@@PackHacker Tips and tricks from pro travelers is always awesome, but I think hearing from travelers on the thinking and logic behind their travel systems would be really cool. Fortunately, I have a job that lets me travel for work and I always find it really cool to hear from others about their "philosophy of use" when it comes to their travel systems. So maybe a podcast taking an in depth look at how people pack, what gear they prioritize and why. Thanks!
