I laughed when you mentioned that the sonics of plate verb could change while using it... The first time I worked with the EMT 140 was back in the 80’s, as a young engineer; I was an A2 at that time, assisting a head engineer on a mix. The plate was located in the basement of the studio we were working in, with the only access to it being from the outside; similar to a storm cellar, with angled doors at ground level. We got the essentials of the mix dialed in, and took a break for lunch. When we returned, and started working the mix again, we both noticed that the verb on the lead vocal sounded dramatically different than it had earlier. It didn’t sound “bad”, nor did it sound “better”, just different. As it turned out, just before we had returned to the studio, the owner of the studio had opened the access doors of the basement, to get rid of a foot of snow that had accumulated on them from a storm the night before, and cold air then rushed into the basement, rapidly dropping the ambient temperature. That sudden temperature drop completely altered the sound of the plate. As the basement began to warm up again, the sound of the reverb gradually returned to where we’d set it. But, the head engineer then decided that he actually liked the sound of the “cold” plate better than the original “warm” one... I half-jokingly asked him if he wanted me to go out and open the basement doors again; he smiled, but didn’t laugh, and he said, “Yeah, I do, but we’d better print the warm reverb as it is now, just in case I change my mind later.” This is the sort of experience that a modern recording engineer won’t encounter... unless plug manufacturers start putting virtual doors and temperature adjustments on their reverb plugs. 🤣🤣
Thanks for your story. The closer I get to making something and releasing it that I'm proud of, the further I feel I get from records that I have heard with with warmth and character that of analogue gear from those times. Things change but I guess I'm starting to feel a little less impressed by what I'm doing on my lil computer when I hear a story like this. But nevertheless different paths but same journey.
Right! I was thinking the plug-in programmers could read the temperature sensors for the cpu or the system board to simulate the effects of long recording session.... 😏
@@briancase6180 Man.. That's an idea.. Is that even possible? And even if it is, wouldn't it essentially just be a code written into the program simulating the warmth... and when do you tell the plugin to do such a thing.
@@thearcaneplane2791 Of course it's possible: you can get a utility (Intel makes one for its chips) that will report current values of the various temperature sensors in your system. A plugin could use the same APIs to access the sensors. So, yeah, the code would assume that the plate is warming up in synchrony with the system or the CPU. Since, after all, the "plate" is *in* the program, which is in the system or the CPU, depending on your point of view.... :)
I'm an idiot. I've been using this thing for months and never clicked on the dropdown menu icon to reveal the whole equalizer portion of the plugin. I need a beer.
Its easy to miss, and Ive been lazy about the drop down menu....Got it free from Arturia and its one of my best gentle and lush Reverbs. Pass me the bottle too!
I’ve own this for a few months. I actually got it when it was free. I can honestly say that it’s one of my favorite reverbs I own. I have all the Valhalla, IK Multimedia, exponential audio (my other go to), waves, and several others. I play aggressive but atmospheric music so reverb is something that is a big part of my sound so I’ve tried/bought a lot of reverb plugins. This to my ears is one of the best. Not for every situation but when I need a plate reverb this is my go to. Even though I got it for free I would happily pay for it. Outstanding reverb.
Arturia are quickly becoming my favourite company. The fact that you can "rent-to-own" their plugins (and still pay the regular price overall) on Splice is amazing.. Their synths and FX plugins are crazy good.
im glad you said "beautiful." i was thinking the exact same thing when you first played it before the EQ adjustment. got a great sound, [from what i can hear through you tube 4k.]
Arturia plate 140 sounds amazing, real pro stuff. You talks a lot about the past. I have spend a lot of time in different studios since the early 80ties, I don't bother much about the past equipment. 😊
I would argue that the linearity and predictably is a good thing. In the world of DAWs, we like the instant recall of sessions. Why, then, would we want randomized reverb? If I dial in the exact setting that sounds good, I wouldn't want it to change.
I agree about the predictability. However, non-linearity does not imply inability for recall. All of the distortion plugins in your DAW work in a non-linear fashion. Gated reverbs are non-linear (unless it's a convolution model of a gated reverb). Compressors are non-linear. The only thing that convolution reverbs cannot emulate properly is the non-linear behaviour of some of these units (bear in mind, algorithmic reverbs certainly could), which can often be one of the qualities that people seek in them. Just to reiterate, seeking non-linearity doesn't mean one is seeking unpredictability.
@BTHanissBEATS Non-linearality is math. Polynomials are non-linear, and they don't give life to anything. Non-linear results can be used to add flavor, but that's not the only way to do it.
Nice tutorial - by the way { bij de weg } we use 2 Original EMT 140 plate Reverbs in our Studio . 1 Stereo Tube Plate 140 and 1 Solid State Stereo Tube 140. - and yes we have a AKG BX 20 and even a AKG BX 25 with the extra Optional M-250 Digital Delay Line , Love from Enschede - The Netherlands and… coffee is ready , always welcome.
You always have such an interesting take, coming from having used the real thing and the expectations that these plugins will truly recreate the real thing. Most other reviewers just stop at “sounds great!” and have nothing of interest to say about how the plug differs from the real deal. Thanks for being awesome!
learning a lot about analog watching your videos, its giving me rounded knowledge on what I've actually been doing with plugins the passed year lol, I knew it was simulating it I didn't realize the compromise tho .. thanks for the content
I like a plate on vocals for getting a vintage sound. It's a more muscular tone that becomes part of the voice better than the warm smooth surrounding bath of modern digital reverb. You and I both own real plates so you know what I'm talking about. I've tried about 6 plate plugins so far including UA and they sound pretty close to me. All those old plates had a different characteristic even though they were the same brand and model due to age of plate, any damage and especially how it's tuned. RCA in Nashville had 3 monos in the basement and they would turn the air conditioner on cold in the plate room a few hours before the sessions started. The colder they got the tighter and more highs even beyond tightening the clips as tight as they can get without breaking. I noticed a couple of plugins had that characteristic warble to the sound caused by some slight bends in the plate making it even more realistic. UA plugin sounded really good to me . Plugins are cool because you can use so many different instances without tons of money and a dedicated room to hold them. Like a giant microphone.
I've got to say that this is easily one of the most immediately usable plate emulations I've tried. It is easy to set into a mix and add a vibe that not one other of my plate reverbs could (and not that the others were bad). I've got Lexicon, Eventide, UAD (which is superb), Waves, and Valhalla. All of them could deliver various plate sounds, but this one ended up quite more organic and absolutely perfect for certain results. This plugin is easily worth its' asking price.
I'm now going to add, for other high quality differing sound, Ecoplate from Hear360 Transatlantic Plate Reverb from Rare Signals. There are others of note (Waves Abbey Road), but these REALLY stand out to my ears. The Transatlantic version is quite spectacular. What a time we live in that we have this kind of technology to be coming forward with such a high quality, and also being so much more affordable.
I got this plugin for free with an audio interface, I was like OK lets check it out why not and than BAMM that sound! since then I use this reverb every time for my bass lines.
Man there are a lot of versions of Sandstorm I’ve never heard before. Also when you turn a plate reverb to full wet, it sounds like someone falling down a concrete staircase
I have this reverb + the effects bundle as well I like there VST plugs ins.You can enjoy all the Analog gear.I don't miss trying to located unwanted noise in the signal.Looking for a bad instrument cable.I would rather not hassle with it all & work inside the box. Thanks for the video Tim
As indicated below this plugin was free back in December for their 20th anniversary - I feel fortunate to have grabbed it then looking at the price now...
I have it and it is so awesome. It sounds amazing on drums most of the time. That´s its main use for my mixes. It has a raw character that fits well with drums.
They added the eq, high pass and pre delay to compete with the abbey road, those were things that they had in abbey road (though wish it had both low and high pass before the delay but you can do that in your daw), sounds pretty good in this demo though.
FINALLY! A plugin I got to before you did! I grabbed the whole Arturia bundle for 200.00 when they had the introductory sale...the bundle as a whole is really good (there are a couple duds in it, but that's usually the case with any bundle)...
The fet 76 by arturia is an amazing compressor, best 76 style compressor that I have used hands down. So much better than the CLA 76 and slate 76. Best vocal compressor that i have found.
So what? As long as you don't describe why that is and where exactly the differences are and on what material you used it... What does that completely off topic post means anyway?
moe47988 I personally haven't used it so I can't say anything on the actual sound, but the arturia is a third of the price and has a lot more options than the uad one. It has a mix knob that makes parallel compression much easier and has advanced side chain controls right in the plugin.
I got it for free and I really like it. I won other plate reverb plugins and this came closest to what I would consider a plate reverb sound. The 99€ are a fair price, although I'd maybe spend it on something else, because it's not my day to day type of sound. I really appreciate, that you stopped rambling too much about analog looking interfaces, keep up the good work.
test to automate the predelay ... this sound smooth , no jump in value , very very great for some chorus type effect on the input ... i don't know why they put a such predelay in repitch mode and not on jump value but when ieared how it sounds while moving this knob , i directly though about moving or automate it while sound playing thru .... unbeatable space chorus/ effect on horns or pads.
i tried this plugin too when it was free. idk.. maybe i was just not in the mood enough but i didn't feel it then. it's really hard to make an objective statement about reverbs though. sometimes i perceive them drastically different
Okay, Wytse, now that you put a toe in Arturia's pool...You MUST try their compressors and their delays. I was surprised how great they performed. I had a dbx 165 and their emulation was VERY spot on!
I've had this plugin for a few months (got it free). It sounds fantastic on my Lounge Lizard Rhodes. I'm not so sure I'd ever pay $100 for this software, but, it does what it does quite well.
Been using this one for a couple of months. I get lost in it sometimes, I put it on snares and toms as well then post-filter them (EQ) a bit and the results are really good, impressive actually. But you can only use it on very specific elements so its quite edgy thinking outside the box with this. Overall it does wonders to drum sequences as well as textures! I still have lot to learn though.
I like this Arturia one. I do think the UAD EMT 140 sounds a wee bit nicer. I the controls layout is nicer too. But this one is worth it for the price.
Good video. I guy this when it was free: I feel very lucky. Just one nit: when you say "linear" you mean "deterministic." The plug-in is deterministic compared to the hardware, which is affected by heat, etc.
Love this plate verb. I prefer it to the soundtoys & waves plates (can’t speak to the Valhalla) and an excellent counterpoint to the old UAD. I also love their own digital algorithms from their Intensify reverb A LOT and have been waiting for an excuse to use their spring verb on an appropriate source - their examples sound amazing so I just need an appropriate track befitting of a characterful spring.
I laughed when you mentioned that the sonics of plate verb could change while using it...

The spring thingy from the same collection is also awesome. The Rev Plate was free for Cristmas. Got to love Arturia. :)
This plugin was free couple months ago.
Yeah I unfortunately realized that one day too late...
Thats why it is a good idea to subscribe to to their mailing list, so you don't miss their gifts.
Thimo Vijfschaft you had to install arturias DRM-controllcenter Software. that's where i folded.
Free for life time? 😭
Also glad I got in early to save 99 Euro
One day youtube is going to actually start giving Darude royalties from all the times you've used this track.
this is the best reverb for me so far.
This thing was free for some days in December. It’s my favorite plate so far and now watching your review, much more! 🤙🏼
Same over here. Got it for free and since then it's my default reverb. I do turn the wet/dry a bit down. 😁
love Arturia plugins!

I love this reverb. Use it all the time.
I like Arturia
They made a few very good synths that I use.
This is hands down the reverb to go when I mix, the one I use the most. While I use NI's Raum for a more creative Reverb effect usually.
I got it for free, I was very surprised how well it fit in the mix! I thought it was just me but yeah this is a good reverb
A sublime and lush reverb plate. I am using it mostly on my Mix reverb sends to all my stems.
I think this is very close to the real thing. Thanks for the rewiev.
i have use this on multiple recordings already. truly love this, especially for drums or synth.
Got it today, it's very real sounding - going to be used a lot
This plugin in even good dry. I just use the drive option and the output. Somehow gives drums a bit of clarity. Not snake oil
Thanks for the tip. Arturias new stuff emulates analog really great. Never thought of this as for "just" saturation. :)
I very much like the sound of it. and for the price it is not bad at all.
I just find I always seem to go back to the Fab filter stuff.. this looks nice , and as always great vid..
really is impressive ... actually
Have you tried the UVI plate reverb? It has a lot more parameters and takes plate reverb to another level
As indicated below this plugin was free back in December for their 20th anniversary - I feel fortunate to have grabbed it then looking at the price now...
I was lucky enough to get this for free a while back. It’s great on snares! 🥁👍🏾
I got it for free some time ago and it's so good it tempts me every time I need to pick a reverb

It sounds amazing on drums most of the time.
That´s its main use for my mixes.
It has a raw character that fits well with drums.
In some of their modeled synths, they have an 'unstable' mode or something. It would be interesting if they added that to this.
i JUST GRABBED THERE v COLLECTION, loving IT. ESP the Buchla, and Oberheim SEM
Got this plugin for free some months ago. What this does for my guitar tone is beyond words.

the small modulation section would help with non linearities but not at a micro level. experimenting with automation may get you a bit closer.
This was free over Christmas. Love it! :)
it's astonishing how much better UAD plugs sound, probably has to do with the back and forth conversion to 192k during processing
You are awesome!
The fet 76 by arturia is an amazing compressor, best 76 style compressor that I have used hands down. So much better than the CLA 76 and slate 76. Best vocal compressor that i have found.

Sounds pretty good 👍🏽
Did you check Transatlantic Plates? Best I have found so far. Good review but pleeeease try with vocals or strings also next time.
There is actually a very helpful and to the point guided tutorial built in. You would have had a lot more fun had you started there. Great plugin!
Best emulation of the EMT-140 I've heard and use, is in Altiverb 7. And they have a number of other plater verbs that are excellent.
test to automate the predelay ... this sound smooth , no jump in value , very very great for some chorus type effect on the input ... i don't know why they put a such predelay in repitch mode and not on jump value but when ieared how it sounds while moving this knob , i directly though about moving or automate it while sound playing thru .... unbeatable space chorus/ effect on horns or pads.
isn't the modulation built in to get the unpredictability in there in some way?
this used to be free but the free download didnt work without contacting the support which had 14 days off because of the holidays at that time
Nice plate. Have you tried the Kush audio Goldplate?
i tried this plugin too when it was free. idk.. maybe i was just not in the mood enough but i didn't feel it then. it's really hard to make an objective statement about reverbs though. sometimes i perceive them drastically different

you the best. could you review the new ssl fusion? I'm super curious
Maybe using the modulation can give some variable in the sound to give a more realistic effect? Sounded pretty good anyhow!

grabbed this last december for free, - very impressive emulation, IMO
Hey Man,
Nice review.
Can you do a review to the Arturia FX Collection. At least for one of the compressors.

could you possibly try to review some free/budget mastering / mixing plugins? I think having solid budget options is really helpful for beginners!
I've had this plugin for a few months (got it free). It sounds fantastic on my Lounge Lizard Rhodes. I'm not so sure I'd ever pay $100 for this software, but, it does what it does quite well.

Great timing as it's on sale for 49 euros/$49 at the moment.
Wow that sounds really nice. I'd say it's better if the reverbs consistant. Though they could add a button to make it more random.
