4:51 I am from Oklahoma and I can confirm that we indeed use baking soda to wash our clothes on a washboard. But I lost my washboard because a tornado blew away my teepee so I had to ride my buffalo to a new village :/
People have been using baking soda to wash clothes, brush their teeth, and clean things in general (like counters, floors, pots, pans, etc) for a long time. It's a great multi-purpose product that lasts a long time and can be used for a lot of things. You can even wash your hair with it. A lot of people use baking soda when they go camping/ hiking because it has so many uses.
I use baking soda for laundry, cleaning, deodorizing, and teeth brushing. Works great. You can buy 13.5 pounds for 7 dollars or cheaper depending on where you shop.
+Patchuchan Not to mention that our current methods of making hydrogen peroxide are somewhat inefficient due to it's inherent instability. If you could make h2o2 by dunking a ceramic ball in some water you would be rich (or you could just make a BS kickstarter and get rich that way).
You can indeed wash your clothes with baking soda. Many people do it. My mom adds baking soda to a wash on top of the detergent. You can also brush your teeth with it
ahomex Maybe you're brushing too hard. Baking soda is way more gritty than toothpaste so if you brush the same way with it, yeah, you'll make your gums bleed because it's like taking sandpaper to them. My mom brushed her teeth with baking soda growing up and never had that problem, so it's not impossible.
It worked- they took the money, sent out an unfinished product and then abandoned the project completely. The comment section of the page is hilarious.
I'm a chemist Irl, and the way detergent works is by bonding with things attached to your clothes and it lifts it off. It also is alkaline, which causes grease and other fatty oils to dissolve in it (water doesn't work). So raising the pH would help, but 8.5 is rather low.
Sorry for this late response, but doesn't water at least wash away some things, not because of ph per se but moistening of the grime and it getting repelled?
@@nathanclark2424 Water does have some natural ability to do that technically but in the context of stained or dirty clothes it won't be able to lift these bits and pieces off just through moisture and kinetic force. If you read more about how soap/detergent functions you'll see why it's needed for any 'real' cleaning.
@slapypenguins101 that's not kinetic force, that's you literally pushing away the dirt with your other hand. The equivalent would be just letting the tap pour water on your hand without you rubbing them together.

+Adrian H. Well yes and no, a lower PH is more acidic, yet a higher PH is alkaline, and there's not a lot of difference. The PH scale goes from 1-14, and neutral in the middle (7) is what most water's PH is. But, a common misconception of alkalis is that they can't burn you, only acids can. This is not true, there are corrosive alkalis. But actually, if it raised the water's PH to 8.5 it would make it slightly on the alkaline side, like vinegar but not acidic. So it would wash your clothes, as vinegar is a natural cleaner because of it's acidic properties. It goes the same way for water, if it's slightly more alkaline / acidic it can clean better. But also, you don't want to be drinking PH 5-6 water considering hydrochloric acid is at 1 on the PH scale. PH 7 water is best. It can dip or dive in certain areas, that's why some places are called 'Hard water' areas or 'Soft water' areas. Hope this helped!
That is all correct but everything I've learned about acids leads me to believe that adding a H+ ion to an H2O molecule effectively lowers the PH because that is how an acid is made, if instead they added an OH- ion or hydroxide that would raise the PH and make it more alkaline.
now the funny thing is you can just use bleach to raise the ph of the water because bleach has a ph of like 14 or something. you know the strong base that you use to wash laundry. maybe they should raise there own ph a little ;)
I sincerely doubt bleach has a Ph of 14 because that is the most basic a base can be. But it would probably be high. A Ph of 14 would basically melt your skin off instantly.
