Yo Preston, just a quick history behind this track. This song is so much more than just a "classic." Nirvana, especially with this track, is one of the defining moments in the history of music, taking the entire scene from one era into the next in the early 1990s. It CANNOT be overstated just how huge this song was when it was released, and how different and raw and powerful it was to the average mainstream listener. Seriously, it was massive, and it was everywhere, and everyone decided it was time to move on from the old age of music and in a newer, grungier direction. It was THE anthem for an entire generation, and pretty much simultaneously killed and then recreated what rock and roll would sound like for a long time to come.

This is one of the few songs where I vividly remember the first time I heard it. It was late at night, autumn 1991, and I was driving across the San Mateo Bridge back home to Oakland, listening to KFJC (low wattage college radio station out of Los Alto) when this came on. I moved to the right lane, slowed down as much as I could without obstructing traffic, and drove on praying "Please don't let me go out of range before the DJ says who this is. PLEASE don't let me go out of range before the DJ says who this is."

Hello hello hello... how low? This song represented how much we hated the game of society of the time. Fight Club said it best:
"We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off."

First time I heard Nirvana was before the hype. I was living in Nevada. My car was an '85 Chevette with an AM radio. I was driving out in the hills and found an AM radio station that was broadcasting a simulcast of an FM station. I got to hear Territorial Pissings by Nirvana while sitting up on that mesa. It helped end much of the loneliness and depression I was feeling that day.

You mean Tupac is the Jim Morrison of hip hop. Rock music has more musical icons and respectable artists than hip hop. Just naming a few musicians such as Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Hendrix, Cobain, Thom Yorke, and Lennon really establishes my point. Their legacy is written in stone.

It's as if people woke up - music got raw!! ... then came Moist and all kinds of other soul shaking music exposing all kinds of deep emotions ... this music is like stage 1 emotional healing ... the bandaid gets ripped the hell off and now we just feel. Over 25 years old and the song still sells up in me a surge of all kinds of emotions ...just want explode with reaction. Let me try to convey how important this song was; it was conveyed in this sentence and pretty much sums up the impact: "If you were in a band on Friday and Saturday Nirvana's Album "Nevermind" came out on Monday you were out of job ". It ripped up the commercial world and tried to get rid of formulated rock n roll. For about 4 years it did just that until Cobain( the lead singer) chose to leave this world. It came in with them and stopped with them. I feel so lucky to have experienced this...it was truly the last great movement in the rock n roll ...I could write for pages and hours on this. So glad you dug this!!

Their breakout hit. It ushered in the Seattle sound (aka grunge) era of the early 90's. When the song broke nationally (in late 1991), the culture changed to reflect the new era because it affected everything from fashion to a demographics shift. Seattle became cool again and lots of young people moved to the Pacific NW to start their lives.

More Nirvana. That’s not their best. Nirvana is amazing. Once you listen to their songs more than once you will start really vibe-ing with them. Live concerts is when I really started to get into their music and ofcourse learning about Kurt thru interviews and the two films(montage of heck and soaked in bleach) huge nirvana fan. Weird lyrics, amazing sound. You just need to give it more than two songs before you cross them out. Nirvana is the 90s and still one of the biggest names in rock.
    songs you should do next
    Aneurysm
    Breed
    In bloom
    Heart shaped box
    Rape me
    Lithium
    Territorial pissings
You know you’re right (with video it’s nuts)
Where did you sleep last night unplugged
    About a girl
Plenty more but this is a start. So many great songs but I feel like you need a taste of their style.

This cannot be overstated how much this song meant to music, society, culture and how the moment it was shown on MTV, the music scene as we knew it, changed forever. Nirvana was the american version of the Beatles. Not in style by any means, but what they did to the culture/society at large when they came to prominence. Then everyone else followed suit. (Pearl Jam, AIC, STP, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, The Pumpkins, Bush, Temple of The Dog, Mudhoney, Hole, Garbage, The Cranberries, etc......) It was an incredible time for music..

I have discovered a lot of black people actually enjoy Nirvana. I was washing dishes one night. My dude, Sean, was mopping the floor and I had this song playing out loud.
Sean was like: "Ay John is that Nirvana?"
    I was like: "Yeah, man."
He said: "Yo. They my boys right there."
We jammed the rest of the shift, it was awesome. Sean's a cool guy.

I named my son, after Layne Staley (alice in chains..), but he was ALMOST kurt 🖤. This band changed my whole
Life.. i was an aspiring musician, on my own by 14 & a raging addict that functioned well.. this is the epitome of my generation. We were the children of divorce becoming commonplace, crazy drugs, & just fucking raw & semi angry.. when i first heard them i knew i was going to be a musician because i had thrived on classic rock & metal, but this was just IT man... it had such an impact, grunge music will always be my heart, forever, it was just too short of an era. But it gave me hope that i hadnt missed the best eras of rock. I was a part of the best timeframe & lucky.. i saw them several times & it was always an experience 🖤🖤🖤🖤

A bomb! That a good way to put it. You also have to put it in context. It's the early 90s and there was all kinds of rock camps. Those of us who were into Metallica, Megadeath and such were likely not into thae hair bands of poision and winger. Others into punk or btitish metal like Iron Maiden and Motorhead.
Then this came out. Atotally new sound and look that resonated with a huge number of people.
This song is epic epic and I continue to stop and listen whenever it comes on.

Its hard to express what a sea change this was at the time. I was a sophomore in college in the spring of '92. Consider that a year previously, we were walking around campus listening to the likes of REM's "Losing My Religion", Extreme's "More Than Words", LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out", Maria Carey's debut "Emotion" etc, etc. So, as an experiment, listen to those(or just google the charts for 1991 and put together your own list to prime yourself)...and THEN listen to this! Mind Blown, at the time. This album and Pearl Jam's "Ten" later that year altered the experience of being a young person at that moment in time.
