I was 18 years old, when this song came out. It hit me like a train. Its hard to describe for younger folks.... at the time, this sounded so real, energetic, and raw..... it was amazing. Compared to all the other fake hair metal and soft rock that was out at the time. This was like a color movie showing up when everything else was black and white. Still sounds great to me too, that song holds up, doesn't sound dated at all.

Bill Bored i was only 9, but had older siblings whom, thankfully, kept me informed on the best music. Ive heard the intro/daves snare compared to the snare which kicks off like a rolling stone. A signal to the listener that times have changed, this is different, and things will never be the same. I always appreciated that comparison

I was about 14 in freakin' Nowhere, Alabama, when this came on the local rock station. After it finished there was a pause while the reverb died, before the DJ said "what the hell was that?" This was the song that ushered in the entire sound of 90s rock. The radio would never sound the same again thereafter, and the influence Nirvana had on music remains to this day. While this song got a bit overexposed, it's a fun jam and a good introduction to an absolutely iconic musical artist (Kurt Cobain)

Some songs bring back VERY specific memories to me. This is one of them. This song came out in late 1991 and was a HUGE hit. It was my friend Keith's favorite song. We were both 27 yrs old at the time. The following 4th of July (1992), we all went to Keith's house for a BBQ. He lived on a quiet, private dirt road. He was married and had two small children. So after sundown, he went and did fireworks in the road for his kids to see. We were all on the yard in lawnchairs watching. Then some drunk driver, fleeing the police, came speeding down this private dirt road at about 80mph and hit and killed Keith. Right in front of us. Right in front of his children. As this was his favorite song, his widow had it played at his memorial service. So when I hear this song, it doesn't bring back any happy memories. It just makes me think of watching my friend Keith being killed.

I was 10 years old when this song released. At the time I had only heard 80's pop and lite rock or adult contemporary that my mom listened to on the radio and thought that I just didn't like music. I didn't have a favorite song, I didn't like any bands, I didn't listen to anything. Until I changed schools and the bus driver played a rock station. Then I heard this song and it blew my little 10 year old mind. I didn't know music could sound like this and it influenced me greatly. After I heard this song, I began to listen to so much 90's rock and I found so many bands to love, all because of this song. (then 15-20 years later I would discover my dad's music and fall in love with classic rock once I was done being a teenager.)

To really understand the impact of this song, you would have to go back in time to the days of MTV where rockers all had big huge hair and wore make up. Then, out of the blue, this shows up on MTV...
Its not just the look, the sound was just as different and this song right here changed our society and our culture very quickly.

This song came-out on September 24th, 1991 and blew everything else out of the water. This was a generational divide song, a worldwide cultural landmark and social manifesto. All bands dream of having a great song. Relatively few achieve that. Nirvana, on the other hand, recorded the Gen-X version of "Rock Around The Clock," "Hound Dog," "She Loves You," "Purple Haze," "Bridge Over Troubled Water," Black Sabbath's self-titled debut album, "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Stairway To Heaven," "Smoke On The Water," "Rock And Roll All Nite," and Van Halen's debut album. This is one of the greatest and most important songs in music history.
Please do "You Know You're Right." It was the last song this amazing band ever recorded.

The true greats are those who usher in something completely new, not just their own music, but introduce an utterly new genre, and change music in general. Even for those of us who were around at the time, it can be hard to remember decades later the sheer originality of the moment. Sometimes it's not just what a band did, but WHEN they did it...and what music was like before and after. In my mind, Nirvana stands alongside the likes of Elvis and the Beatles in this regard.

Like them or not, Nirvana is easliy one of the biggest and most influential bands from the 90s. No one sounded like them. No one played like them. No one really did what they did.
That being said, The Foo Fighters also are a unique band in their own right. You cannot compare the 2. Just because they have 2 members that were in both bands does not mean they are the same.

This song saved my life. In 1991, we the reagan/bush era promise us we were all going to be rich and be part of a country club. It was the end of excess and greed. This revolution was not sexist, racist, homophobic, etc. They actually did concerts to support women's rights (often performing in dresses), gay pride, and inner city schools. This was all for equality Wanting what you have..not having all you want. I was at peace with being poor..and my goal wasn't to get a big house and be rich.. It was to ENJOY life for all its beauty. That beauty is inside you from the moment you were born, just waiting to be discovered and cherished.
