They are not reporting my correct gross earnings over the past 4 to 5 years. I don’t know if it’s because of my 401 or what. I have my last check stubbs of each of those years and the number they are showing isn’t equal to my ytd gross. I am going to their office next week for an in depth explanation.

Well, I stumbled upon one of your videos a few days ago and now this one! I subscribed to your channel a few minutes ago because I like what your content is all about. You cover a wide array of topics and I enjoy it.... Now I'm here as a Disabled individual and my monthly check is close to the $3,000 mark, just by a bit more than a $10 bill shy from it... I was 59 a couple of years ago and I did not want to retire yet at all, it was tough. Then I was able to get unemployment and luckily my home was paid for. But my monthly bills were way more than my unemployment maximum. My spouse told about her aunt that at that time was on Disability, so I enrolled after studying very hard trying to fight off the pain to retain the content. After 16 months and a lot of forms to wordsmith out I got my Disability. Was I shocked, now I could just barely to keep up and even now with a pain pump and a stimulator installed I can think much better! I rambling so I want to cut to the chase in hopes that or a community member can ease my mind. When I reach retirement age will I automatically go from SSDI to SSA monthly checks? Also, if I have to transition over to SSA will my monthly checks become lower or will they remain the same? I have tried to look it up on the internet here lately and found several blog sites that have me concerned about it. So I watched the content of this video and it got me to thinkíng to ask you and the community if they could answer my questions. Thanks to all in advance and have a blessed day tomorrow!

Two issues that are very important that get no detailed explanation are the following.
    1. Survivor Windex which can add a substantial amount to your PIA
    2. Restricted Application which if not used it noted during filing could ruin your ability to take advantage of strategies in taking survivor benefits and loss of thousands of dollars.
Devin you need to touch on these subjects!

The interesting thing is that the graduated curve cuts for computing benefits cuts both ways. For the lower wage earner, more of their wages are counted to compute their retirement benefit. Most people don't appreciate this.

Most people will never even get close to making $100,000 a year. Most people where I'm at dont even get to $50,000 a year. I myself am around $30,000 a year. Since that is a livable wage, anyone making over $80,000 should have more than enough money saved for the rest of their life and still have alot to leave to kids or whoever they want to leave their money to. They dont need social security. Especially anyone making over $100,000 a year. If we make that a net amount instead of gross, that's around $8,000 a month. A single person can easily live on less than $2,000 a month. Though a person making that much will also have a difficult time saving money. So anyone making more should have no problems saving. I myself live on between $1,000 and $1,500 per month and still have a little left over to put into my savings. It may just be $50 a month or every couple months but it's still doable with proper budgeting.

It should be 4,000 a month for anyone who doesn't have a house paid down! Living expenses are huge for the elderly and the disabled, and to pay 1000 to 2,000 a month on rent is inhumane for those on social security. Many are forced to live off catfood, dogfood, or relatives, because of unaffordable living costs.

But there was a 10 year period where I did not work because I was a full time live in caretaker for my Mother who suffered a stroke and finally passed from Dementia. Social Security says that as a result I will receive around 984.00 a month. There are these scams on both television and the internet as to how for a fee get your benefits increased? Robert Cole, it is easier said than done once you find out what to do.
I saw a link on the Veterans Affairs website I opened it and started reading it.
Another disabled veteran told me about as well.
I printed my work history and made copies of my disabled rating letters from the V A.
I went on line and looked for a law firm that law that specializes in Social Security Disability Insurance. I went to their office and spoke to a representative he asked me what makes you think you qualify for SSDI ?.
I gave him my copies of my Disability rating letters from the V.A. 70 %rating.
He read the letters and said no problem .
He got some forms 3 each and signed them , I asked him is there any other information you need or could use ?. He said any and all information would be greatly appreciated. I told him no problem I will be back in one hour.
I went to the V A hospital and went to the release of information . I told the lady that I need a copy of medical treatment record from the time that I started treatment and I also need a CD copy of all X-rays , MRI's and CAT SCANS , she why I needed them I told her my Attorney needs this information, she said okay give me about 30 minutes. I had my file and the CD and was back in his office 10 minutes to the hour. I told him here is the CD with all X-rays MRI's and CAT SCANS and here is my medical treatment record.
His reply was " excellent very thorough".
My claim was filed January and received an official letter from the law firm that I won my case in the month of April. I received three months back pay. The law firm charged $ 1,500.00 for the service which was taken off the top I never missed it. I told my representative no problem it is tax deductible .
Find a law firm get copies of your v a medical treatment record and copies off all X-rays MRI's and CAT SCANS .
Make appointment with said law firm and see what they say.good luck.
Last thing I hope you win and you should,
But pass this on to other Disabled Veterans . Army 78-92.

They down played it ? Ok here is what you have to do, 1. make certain that you are still being treated for it so that there is a history of continued treatment, this will solidify your claim.
      2. Draft a letter to the D.A.V. in regards to this matter and describe what you physically can not do and request their assistance with getting another Compensation and Disability Physical when you go to the physical don't hold nothing back in regards to the down play and describe new issues.
If the Doctor / P A gives you a hard time then document it to the D.A.V through the Director of the Hospital through the Director of the V.A. through your Senators and Congressmen and the Senate Chairman and Congressional Chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee bring the heat down on them .
If you can get a civilian doctor to back up your claim would be good ammo.

They screwed me and I gave him a 6 page letter addressed to to everyone that listed to you earlier. He said is there any way that we can resolve this . I told him make it right and correct the issue. Why not think the same with Social Security?.....simply a form of general taxation? Here's the problem....it was expected that the "next generation" pay into the SS system that the "current" generation draws-from. It's not trying to get back the money you put in for yourself, like so many think happens with SS. So....since the 70's....companies have been shipping jobs overseas.... @@TheWilferch Thinking about social security in the same way you think about general fund income tax is a mistake. They are two different things. What you say applies to federal and state income taxes. I understand what you are saying that some people that pay more taxes believe they should get more government. We are talking about a social contract that, as you point out, each generation pays for the retirement of the previous generation with the understanding that the next generation will pay for the current generation. Will that overall "bother" him?....and will that overall make a big "dent" -- one way or the other? -- to his later retirement income if we look at what the typical guy in this salary range usually does to prepare for retirement? I know this sounds the antithis of my generally-conservative view on life.....but in this case I'm still baffled why the tax simply "Stops" at some higher-income level. Then finally this--> the point I brought up before......KNOWING that the original premise was for a larger-future-generaton of workers to pay into the system (for it to work properly)....and KNOWING this is not the case....because 1.) automation makes for less workers....and 2.) shipping jobs overseas doesn't work either ( for both reasons..not to pay into the system).....then we must agree that the system "assumed-basis-of-operation".... is now flawed and will collapse over time. So it begs the question.....what to do? I propose looking at it more like a general tax....it may not be the "best" or "most-fair-to-all" option.....but does anyone have an alternative? Alternatively, increasing the retirement age DIRECTLY to those affected is not popular and is more unfair...and neither is a REDUCTION of benefits. OK then (politely)...the ball is now in your court.....what's the solution ?????

Did you apply at the same age that your sister used to apply?
If you applied @ age 62, but she waited 5 or 8 yrs longer to apply, those things could/would make a huge difference...

Linda, when calculating SS, the department uses the annual Incomes of your best 35 working yrs, and creates an average income from that...
Any yrs. you had no income, count a Zero so one yr of non work will bring down the average... it's a little more complex than that, but Devon does to a full explanation of how the calculation is made, in another video. Even a yrs income of $20 k is very significant for the average, if it happened in the early 80s or before... that's because FICA taxes were much lower back then...
You need not have a full understanding of the calculation, to understand, elimination of any "Zero" yrs, will help the calculation a great deal...
      Hope that helps...

Is it difficult to bet SS disability? My husband will be 66 in August of this year. He has surgery in 2019 and while in hospital had a minor stroke. He went back to work two months after surgery. He is dining it difficult to do his job and may have to retire sooner than August. We don’t know what our next step should be. His job offered him an option to take a lot less $ until August. If she retired at 62, odds are she's not paying any taxes. She probably makes less than $17K a year and in most States she won't pay any taxes on that small amount. Find another woman her age and split the expenses on an apartment or if she owns her own house, rent out her bedrooms to other women. $300. a month per woman. She may not want to do it, but you can get by. That's the way people did it before
Social Security. They called them rooming houses and the more people that lived there, the less it cost everyone to live.

I believe the max SSDI is $2788, but that figure is based on eligible earnings. Most people don't receive that amount.
If you took SSDI before Social Security Retirement, then your SSDI will convert to retirement when you reach full retirement age. The dollar amount won't change though, only the name of the benefit will change.
Some people can receive SSI (supplemental security income), which can be received along with SSDI. You can go to your Social Security Office to apply for SSI, but as always, there are restrictions as to who is eligible.

I just heard a noted economist on PBS argue that breakeven analysis for SS is "nuts." He said, "SS is an insurance policy. You dont do a breakeven analysis on your homeowners insurance. You have homeowners for a worst-case scenario." Wait a minute. So if you have a house worth $40,000 you rent to college kids, and it costs you $4000 annually for insurance, and you paid the premium for 20 years, you just paid $80,000 for a house worth half that. Thats nuts. I guess my point is I dont want SS benefits just to pay my nursing home bill.

    • @fourdayhomestead2839

Nursing home is $6700mo. Medicare only pays up to a set number of days per year. SS, private health insurance or state aid may take care of the rest. State aid puts a lean on any assets, (something to think about before signing up for that).

Cus the only way this would happen is if you applied for disability and your husband makes more than 1060 per month. Did you make at least 4000 dollars a year for 10 years in a row because if you didn’t that would also make you ineligible for retirement money.
