Hi Devin. Thank you so much for this VLOG. My wife recently passed away and I applied for survivor’s benefit. When I go a call from the SSA about my claim, I got what I believe was bad information. I thought they were wrong but with what you taught us AND downloading the OIG report you referenced, I am confident I am right. I will be speaking to them again next week but am now armed with knowledge.
My wife died 2 days ago I'm so broken I don't even want to think about benefits but I have to because I need to get it done otherwise I'll forget about it
Great job in explaining the survivor benefits, easy to understand. Thanks for taking voluminous amounts of the SSA code reduced to a 12: 44-minute video.
I love your videos because you are, to me, very clear with your message. Thank you for your efforts in educating the public about Social Security benefits.
Thank you for clarifying the survivors benefit! Guess I need an appointment with the Social Security office. When my Husband left for Heaven, my whole world changed. This video just showed me that my life will be easier soon. Thank you, thank you. P.S. - Love your info!
yes, they have many rules, i was surprised i could collect on him, also to get the surviving spouse check one must have been married to the deceased for 10 years...if they marry a second time the new wife can only collect if they too married 10 years...less than 10 years the second spouse gets nothing...

You do get that survivors benefit before age 60 if you become disabled or in no way able to work no more because of health problem you will get that benefit check before age 60
So I was born in 1962 does that mean I have to wait 7 months to file for survivors benefits once I do turn 60? Another thing is my husband got benefits at age 62 does that mean I'll still get 82.5% ?
Kajun, sorry for your loss. Based upon your info: Your late husband was receiving 79.65% of his full age benefit. You're eligible to receive that amount or the 82.5% max of his full age benefit, whichever is greater, but no greater. And that amount is subject to survivor benefits reduction, dependent upon your age. Best scenario for you: Max claim @ 62 years 7 months. Refer to graphics @ 7:00/8:00/9:40.

I'm thinking of filing for widows benefits, I will be 60 soon...I am working and my question is do they adjust your income if I file in the middle of the year and made over the limit of 17,000. Do they start to calculate from the beginning of the year or when I file? And can I finish my year working and collect S.S as long as I stay under the limit?

Great video Devin, I always recommend your video's to everyone when the topic of social security comes up. I have one question about the widows limit, I took my social security at soon as I turned 62, I seen you video about when your birthday is not your birthday, this is a very strange rule, and I'm happy to say my birthday is on the first day of the month, so I was able to get paid for the month I actually turned 62, and since social security considered my birthday the last day of the previous mouth, I got a small increase for delaying a month, most people think I'm crazy when I tell them this. Back to the widows limit, since I took ss at 62, if I was to pass away, it looks like my younger wife that was born in 1965 could collect 82.5% of what I would have collected at full retirement age when she turns 62 and 7 months, would this be 82.5% of what my statement said I would get at full retirement age years ago, or would cola raises be added? Thanks.
Hello, Thank you for posting this video. My question is: Can a disabled widow collect at 61 his/her survivor benefit if the deceased spouse was also disabled and PIA is lower? Would it be a disadvantage to file in this case?
If you make over 17,000 can you differ the difference into a 401k so that technically you only made 17k and keep your benefits? Or does that not make sense? I'm trying to learn as much as I can to prepare myself.
Help. I've been a widow since my 20s, never been remarried and my disabled child received benefits... I'm now 60. Can i apply for benefits now? It would really help me as I'm very ill ....
ally wolf I don't know what your FRA is, but maybe you should find out if you are eligible for SS disability, and if it would be best for you to apply for disability until you reach your FRA. Maybe it would not, but you should find out either way. Also, getting the numbers ( information) from the SSA is important- just don't ask them for financial advice. I'm lining up appointments for that with professional advisors, not help desk workers. 😉
Yes it is. The "deemed filing" rules do not apply to Survivor benefits. The SSA website says, "Deemed filing applies to retirement benefits, not to survivor’s benefits. So, if you are a widow or widower, you may start your survivor benefit independently of your retirement benefit if you restrict the scope of your application." You can find that at this link www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/claiming.html
I used the word "deemed filing" as if everyone knew what that was. Sorry! I hate jargon and there I go using it. Deemed filing means that when you file for one benefit, you automatically file for all benefits for which you are entitled. This eliminates the ability to switch around between benefits. But again...this does not apply to survivor benefits.
A worker entitled to social security benefits under their own work and subject to the WEP reduction. Why would that same worker entitled to survivor benefits as a divorced widower, married after age 61 and after the death of the 2nd spouse, have to forfeit benefits of the 1st deceased spouse. The 1st spouse served 20 years active military, ten years on the military recall list after retirement, worked under the Federal Employment Retirement System for 16 years. He died at 55 years of age and never drew social security benefits. Why do the social security administration reduce my suvivor benefits under the GPO provision. There were no social security or other benefits due from the 2nd spouse.
Hi Devin Carroll, I am new to your videos & yes, I subscribed. I am curious as to if either me(age 60) or my mom(age 77) would be eligible for Social Security survivor benefits from my dad. He died at age 87. She has been married before to someone else but my dad never remarried. She is currently a widow. I am his oldest child & I am on SSI. What are our chances of collecting those benefits?
Can u explain Railroad Retirement with spouse 32 yrs of service, age 62...born 9/1939...? He started RR collecting 2001 (Tier1/2 as he paid 6.2% into Soc Sec plus 4.2% into RR and made the 30 yr commitment. Then in 2018 deceased at age 79. Surviving spouse was also a working woman in different field, has 40 quarters as Drafter. But was only 59 at spouse death, she was not disabled & no minor child at the time. Should she also get estimate or do something with Social Security office..or just apply at RRB Railroad Board? They had a question about "PROTECTING THE SOC SEC OPTION" But how does one do this?
My husband died two times i was marry and i did not receive survivor benefits because social security kept asking me for more information the information i had wasnt good enough
At what age does a mother of a childs deceased fathers stop receiving the monthly check that is used to take care of this child if the child stays in school?
I have been disabled since childhood, and have been living on social security from my parents since they died. Can I buy stocks without losing my social security and/or medicare?
If my husband dies before me, my income will drop to 35.7% of what we had when he was alive. I would receive 1823.00 out of 5103.00. I can’t impress on him and my adult son enough how dire it will be if we don’t get situated now. We are just starting to receive Social Security now
Question: im FRA and collecting my full benefit and my Divorced spouse died also after his FRA but I do not know at what age or when he began to collect his SOC SEC benefit...is my divorced widow benefit calculated based solely upon the amount of benefit he was receiving at death regardless of whether he began reveivong benefits earlier than his FRÀ?
I am 64 and just switched from SSI to my ex husbands survivors Benefits and I took a cut from 1001.00 to 970.00 I couldn’t survive before !!! I am so upset !!! Then they say that I can’t collect the retroactive of 5 months because I am 64 !!! They say that I have to be 66 !!! Can they do this ??? What happens if I try to go back to work ??? Don’t even know if I can handle it !!! What if I get a inheritance ? Can they cut my benefit or take it away ??? My mom just passed and I might be getting some kind of inheritance ??? Thank you !!!
Hi, @ Devin Carroll I retired October 2021 and my husband passed in February 2015. He was disabled and received disability insurance. I retired at 59 and I'll turn 60 this year. I have an appt with SS in August. I managed to save some money before I retired. I want to know if this will affect me in qualifying for survivor's benefits?
I am divorced and remarried. Can I take my current deceased husband’s benefits now and when my ex husband passes switch to his which will be much more?
Something I don’t think you addressed. My wife files on her own record at 62, I the older one and higher earner waits until 67. I die and my wife continues her benefit until 67 can she then file survivor benefit and get my full amount ?
I'm trying to understand this. I get disability and am a widower. I started getting disability at age 57 in May of this year and got 2 years back pay. My wife died in 2009 at the age of 43. Now my wife always made more money than me. Can or should have tried to file under her?
I would recommend you call the SSA and ask them this question. "What would my survivor benefit be from my deceased spouse [her name here]." In some cases, they do not look at marriages which ended before your eligibility for benefits. So, it may be that there is a higher benefit waiting for you. (This is why I do these videos!) One thing to consider, your SSDI benefit is your full retirement age benefit. If you file for a survivors benefit, it would be reduced due to your age. Alternatively, you could wait until your full retirement age and then file for the survivors benefit. Lot's of options here. Find a great financial planner who understands this if you'd like to figure this out.
@@DevinCarroll -- my mom tried for 3yrs to get my dad's ss survivor ben bc she was on ssi but kept tellin had to be 62!! I know this is NOT TRUE my mom passed jan Anyway i can still appeal for her? To get 3yrs of amount difference??
I am very confused. My mom just got approved for Survivor's yesterday. She just turned 60. My dad passed at age 73 in 2019 and he was retired. There's an X amount that she will begin to receive for January beginning February 2021. However, at the bottom, there's another dollar amount from April 2003 through December 2020. Does this mean she's getting a lump sum of the total amount from 04/2003 - 12/2020??? We are super confused as to where the second came from and what its for. Someone, please clarify. Thank you in advance 🙏!
My husband collected ssdi and died at age 42. I haven’t remarried and I am age 62. Am I eligible for his full retirement amount if I wait to file at my full retirement age

Dear Deven, If my husband passed away at age 30 and we were married for over a year and had. Daughter together am I also eligible for benefits as his spouse ? I currently have been collecting on my daughter's behalf but wonder if I have been eligible all along as well? He passed at 30 and I was 27 at the time of an accidental death.
I recieve "divorced widow benefits" at 60 its suppose to go up..he only collected disability for a year before his death....how do they calculate? ( i was disabled) he died at 63...
I am disabled can I collect off my ex now?i am 62 ? I still work part time ! Had to go back to work after my divorce to make it! Plus soc sec does not have this info on file correct? I would have to contact them send in divorce papered decree etc ?
If you were married and disabled at that age you would be eligible to receive benefits. Im not sure how being divorced changes that. Call and make a phone appointment they will break it down for you. Good luck 🙏
Do you have a video on DAC on Dads records after he passes. I didnt hear you give info on Child in Care benefit for the disabled Adult if the surviving spouse is NOT disabled. Do they limit income also for parent in charge of the adult disabled child. I have gaurdianship.
If you are receiving survivors benefit for a child and that child turns 18 and the benefit ends; does the next child get his benefits or the money is gone?
My hubby is a disabled Vet- I didn’t know I could apply for spousal benefits at 60- then defer my own- till FRA- Just FYI out there ladies- if your spouse of more than 10 yrs is already receiving SS you can apply for Spousal Benefits- call your local office- 🤯

Should receive the greater of either: Personally earned benefits/dependent spousal benefits. You've reached full retirement age, and are no longer subject to any reduction for early filing.
My first husband of over 10 years passed away prior to filing for any SS benefits. I did marry once after this marriage and was married over 10 years. I have been divorced from the 2nd husband for over 20 years and have remained unmarried. I am a few years away from filing for SS benefits at the earliest eligibility age. I believe both husbands remarried and the 2nd husband is still living. My question is am I entitled to a survivor benefit from the first husband without jeopardizing the benefit the wife may receive? If so, am I to wait the age of 62 and 5 months before initially filing?
So if a couple files jointly with one working and the other receives social security and has retirement income, how will the stimulus be paid? One check to both or two individual checks. Thanks in advance.

If you make over 17,000 can you differ the difference into a 401k so that technically you only made 17k and keep your benefits? Or does that not make sense? I'm trying to learn as much as I can to prepare myself.
@@antmydude236 No it's still counted as income.
Help. I've been a widow since my 20s, never been remarried and my disabled child received benefits...
I'm now 60. Can i apply for benefits now? It would really help me as I'm very ill ....
I think you should try.
Yes!
How old is your kid and how long they been disabled
ally wolf I don't know what your FRA is, but maybe you should find out if you are eligible for SS disability, and if it would be best for you to apply for disability until you reach your FRA. Maybe it would not, but you should find out either way. Also, getting the numbers ( information) from the SSA is important- just don't ask them for financial advice. I'm lining up appointments for that with professional advisors, not help desk workers. 😉
Great video 👍
But what about taking your own benefits early, them switching to the survivors benefits? Is that possible?
@@DevinCarroll "you may start your survivor benefit independently of your retirement benefit".. Do income limits not apply to survivor benefits then?
sdesai1989 Yes. The income limits DO apply to survivir benefits.
@@DevinCarroll Thanks!
Thanks for the update
My husband died 15 years ago before he could finish 40 quarters, I have 35 quarters, so would I add up his quarters to receive survivor benefit at 62?
David is there a way I can contact you or you can contact me for personnel counseling. I have a unique situation that many Americans do not have.
Is it based on case by case?
My husband died two times i was marry and i did not receive survivor benefits because social security kept asking me for more information the information i had wasnt good enough
If I receive survivors benefits for my son, his dad died, will the amount change if I move states?
my dad passed today
@@roas1015 I'm so sorry for your loss.
Residence should have no bearing on the benefits you/your son receive.
Thanks for your help.
Thanks this video was helpful.
At what age does a mother of a childs deceased fathers stop receiving the monthly check that is used to take care of this child if the child stays in school?
Does government pension offset affect survivors benefits?
I have been disabled since childhood, and have been living on social security from my parents since they died. Can I buy stocks without losing my social security and/or medicare?
Yes as long as it's ssdi and NOT ssi.
question my wife died a 1.5 years ago, and i just remarried again am i entitle for any survival benefits ? i did received 255.00 from SS.....
What if the deceased claims early on the lower earners ss?
What form do I have to fill out for filing a benefit for my spouse and where do I have to file it to?
Good video. God bless.
Most people don’t wait for their FRA, can you use the minimum age for calculations...thanks
I am divorced and remarried. Can I take my current deceased husband’s benefits now and when my ex husband passes switch to his which will be much more?
Devin can you help me with the spousal benefits I’m in to and don’t get nowhere with SSI I’m 59 my wife passed 41/2 months ago
Husband had disability payment with offset of social security at age 42 till his death at age 69...how is that calculated???
Something I don’t think you addressed. My wife files on her own record at 62, I the older one and higher earner waits until 67. I die and my wife continues her benefit until 67 can she then file survivor benefit and get my full amount ?
How about if the deceased was on disability?
I'm trying to understand this. I get disability and am a widower. I started getting disability at age 57 in May of this year and got 2 years back pay. My wife died in 2009 at the age of 43. Now my wife always made more money than me. Can or should have tried to file under her?
I would recommend you call the SSA and ask them this question. "What would my survivor benefit be from my deceased spouse [her name here]." In some cases, they do not look at marriages which ended before your eligibility for benefits. So, it may be that there is a higher benefit waiting for you. (This is why I do these videos!)
One thing to consider, your SSDI benefit is your full retirement age benefit. If you file for a survivors benefit, it would be reduced due to your age. Alternatively, you could wait until your full retirement age and then file for the survivors benefit.
Lot's of options here. Find a great financial planner who understands this if you'd like to figure this out.
Thanks for your advice. I will give them a call.
@@DevinCarroll -- my mom tried for 3yrs to get my dad's ss survivor ben bc she was on ssi but kept tellin had to be 62!!
I know this is NOT TRUE
my mom passed jan
Anyway i can still appeal for her? To get 3yrs of amount difference??
I was in employment support allowance support it’s change to social security benefit what does it mean
We are both in our 70s. My wife gets half of my benefits since her's was so low. Can I assume that she will get 100% of my check when I pass away?
Yes but she will not receive hers then. She will get only the higher of the two benefits.

Can one collect unemployment and survivor benefits at the same time and receive both?
i won a wcab settlement , will it affect my SSDI benefits?
If that money is hid away in a safety deposit box were it's untraceable it wont

I am disabled can I collect off my ex now?i am 62 ? I still work part time ! Had to go back to work after my divorce to make it! Plus soc sec does not have this info on file correct? I would have to contact them send in divorce papered decree etc ?
If I understand this you can only if your unmarried and caring for a child- 🤷♀️
Well I tried every year he was gone and the answer was I made a 100 more than him.
? What if he's alive?
@@deecee901 if he is receiving SS and was born before Jan 2, 1954 you can file Spousal at 62- you get half of his without effecting his until your Full Ret. age- hope that helps-

My husband worked for GM over 22 years and recently passed. GM says his pension is for me at age 55 and will be $244. per month. This doesn't seem right whatsoever. He made over 65k per year
I married my husband for 30 years, am I eligible to get benefits ?I'm 67 he's 83
Your decisions will not effect/impact either 1st's widow nor 2nd's current spouse. Survivor benefits claim on your 1st was lost when you remarried.
What if x spouse is receiving civil service? I was told I can not claim per ss unless x spouse dies
Do I have to file for SS but not collect so my spouse can collect my full benefits? Age 67 both spouses.
What a system....its like I need to guess which hand the candy in.....lucky if u get it right
So if a couple files jointly with one working and the other receives social security and has retirement income, how will the stimulus be paid?
One check to both or two individual checks.
Thanks in advance.
Thank you, one question can i keep my spouse ssa even he died early Or not? he died September 14, and he will receive his ssa September 25.
What happened when spouse remarrying
You can file on a divorced spouse if you are unmarried and caring for that spouses child-
@@ruththomas7164 Yes for the child, yes to you too. And you have to have been married to him for 10 yrs.

If you don't have a copy of them, you may be "out of luck".
Past accountants usually keep files.
Nobody explains what happens if the deceased dies before he even reaches his 60's? I have watched 4 different channels and this is never talked about?

let me ask you then why did I get denied to the fact that they say my husband liked himself 7 years 1 month and 2 days to early and we were married almost 25 years
My husband battled brain cancer in 2004 and he was 100 % disabled for 11 1/2 he collected his Social security until he passed away in 2015 at the age of 55. I will be 59 here soon so will I be able to collect the 82% of my husbands Social Security Survivors benefits when I turn 60 ? We were married 31 years and have no young kids. When I turn 60 and I start collecting my husbands Social Security Survivors benefits will I then be able to get married and still continue to collect the Social Security Survivors benefits or will I loose them if I get married? I heard if I get married before I turn 60 I will not be able to collect his Social Security Survivors benefits Thanks=)
What if my x is on Disability would i still just get 82%..He got Disability in his 50's.
His SSDI is based on his full retirement age benefit amount. The only reduction should be due to your filing age.
Why did the as a give my as a an 1/2 of my spouse when he died we wear both over our retirement age. He was my x spouse
