I am from southern Ohio right near the river. I think people forget just how isolated we are here. Things have progressed but we are still considered very backwards here. My family were all miners and when they shut down it broke us apart. I grew up in extreme poverty but we always had food and coal in the winter to keep warm. So many of the ways you talk about being in the past I grew up with. When I seen you washing the baggie I couldn't believe there was someone else who did that. I have reused baggies that didn't have raw meat in them all my life.

I wash my freezer bags out and reuse them so you are not alone. I use the cheap zip lock sandwich bags to separate my meat into servings sizes and then place those in gallon or quart freezer bags. This way raw meat never touches the freezer bag. BTW, hello from Dayton, Ohio!

I don’t know much about how it is to live in Appalachia, I’m born and bread in Sweden. I’v seen some videos and it seems like it’s a hard, tuff life and for many people a poor life too witch is so sad. I have to say though that in many ways it seems to be a much richer life then a lot of people in better of communities have. Personally I wouldn’t mind living there, I think it’s beautiful.

That next morning we went for breakfast and visiting with the cousins. Oh my what a treat. We ate a bit high on the hog. Pork tenderloin and biscuits with gravy and fried eggs and potatoes. After a cup of fresh coffee I was ready to lay in front of the fireplace and nap!

The foot hills of the Appalachian Mountains. The next road over from us has a view of the mountains of the Blue Ridge and the Smokey Mountains. We have a small 5 acre homestead. Right now we have 76 chickens. We have 16 Buff Orphingtons, 6 Rhode Island Reds, and 5 miscellaneous breeds of hens. Then we have 7 roosters that all need to be in a lot but they're not. On top of this we have 18 baby chicks in the brooder. Hoping to have goats on day soon but we need to prepare for them. Love your channel.

Now, I know you made this a while ago, I'm trying to catch up. Love all of these videos so far. I wasn't born and raised in the mountains, but my grandparents were. They moved to SC mill hills in the 20's and 30's to find work, but I don't think the mountains ever left them; and consequently never left me. The WNC mountains are the only place I have ever felt at home. It's a story and a half how I know the mountains are my heart's home, but I will leave that for another time. I saw your list in this video......on that list was a Arsh Tater Cake. I'm interested in your cake, to see if it is similar to my family's. (forgive me if you have covered it already) Our cake is deeply chocolate. with spices galore. Marischino cherries and orange juice. The icing is a beast that is also deeply chocolate and is boiled and then "whupped". The icing is a tempermental thing.....not enough heat it is runny, too much heat, or cooked to long it is a grainy hard mess. It is not Christmas at all unless this cake is made. Apple stack is made for old Christmas on January 6th. GahLee, I love these videos. They are the next best things to living in WNC.
PS.....I used to be a pastry chef in a fancy dining club.....I made Arsh Tater Cake for those rich folk, they went CRAZY!!! Wanting me to make it all the time. Nope....that;s for Christmas time. I really can't thank you for doing these videos.....the comfort they give. HUGS!!!!!

A determination to carve out for themselves a lifestyle which would take into account their dissenting Calvinistic faith and the desire to break completely from the shackles of autocracy experienced in Ireland and Scotland kept these families going.
The battles with British forces, the native Indian tribes, and the elements in a harsher climate took a terrible toll on men, women, and children, but with a doggedness and a steely character inherent in their culture, the brave Scots pioneers won through, initially to the Appalachian states of Virginia, Tennessee, the Carolinas, Kentucky, and Georgia, and eventually to points west and south, like Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Texas, and Ohio.

I just love a meal of sausage gravy with a little crushed sage and black pepper. Put that over some homemade buttermilk biscuits with a side of fried apples (our family always left the peelings on). When our son was about 9 we had a supper of B's and G's and fried apples. I didn't think he was ever gonna come up for air. I pulled his shirt up and his belly looked like a drum skin. He'll be 50 in July and still remembers that meal. My grandma taught me how to make gravy. "Just remember Nor, make sure you cook the flour before you add the milk" she said. Grandma Hines was born in a covered wagon in the Cherokee nation of Oklahoma. She learned to cook on an open fire and she could make cornbread and biscuits in and old cast iron skillet. She would nestle the skillet in hot coals and cover the lid with coals
too. She had no timer and knew exactly when to pull the skillet out of the fire. They were perfect every time.

I’m so glad your channel came through my feed! I love watching everything you do! I’ve always been fascinated with Appalachia I don’t know why. I’m a Ca. Girl born and raised. Appalachia is just so beautiful tho!
My Mama’s family came from Missouri & Oklahoma. I learned about turning the apple core and where the stem broke off as you said your ABC’s that letter would be the start of your husbands name!

I don't know why this northerner is so fascinated with the Appalachians either. Even though I was born and raised on Long Island New York I love the mountains. I'm also part English Irish and Scotch. Love music and a simple way of life. Never felt like I belonged where I was born isn't that funny?

I remember my great-grandparents house.. no electricity or running water. Wood burning stove and oil lamps. Spring house in the front. Old tin roof that sounded sooooo good in the rain. Lived off the land and lived to be nearly 100 years old. They died in the 1980’s and all around them was modern but they wasn’t going to change. Such a simple life they had.

I rem the sayings about the apples. Your videos are gold. I grew up like you, just a different place. Daddy always had a garden, chickens, pigs, cows. Smokehouse. Hog killing in Jan, making sausage. Sorghum syrup.we had a wood cooking stove for a long time. Same way of living, I'm in northwest Georgia. I fry streak o lean and make sweet milk gravy. My daughter's love it. I'm 79 yrs old now and live "in town". Oldest daughter just bought a farm and she said she felt like she was going home.

You did something I never do. I don't put my knives in dishwater. Not anymore! For some reason a cut underwater doesn't hurt me and I have gashed myself pretty good before. Now I wash the knives first, dry them then put them up before washing the rest of the dishes. They like to get me in the drainer too!

That tan speckled bowl you mix stuff in, I can't believe it. My mother had an IDENTIAL one and I got it when she went to heaven. It was the same shape, size and color. I almost cried when I saw it because it remined me so much of her. I used it so much that one day the thing just split in half when it had batter in it.
