  • Today Tama has a big task: I'm going to show you my favorite Pokemon from my Pokemon teams, in every Pokemon game. That's a lot to explain! Come see how my team building strategy has evolved over time, from putting zero thought into it to planning entire spreadsheets for it. You'll also find out why some of my favorite Pokemon are my favorites as I go through past memorable playthroughs and special moments with each one.

Pastebin of my Crystal notes: pastebin.com/p1ksZiue
Reading this over, I talk about duping a lot of TMs, but I did not end up duplicating TMs in Crystal. Instead I used the item cases in Stadium to move TMs back from Gen 1 where they had previously been duped in my Blue playthrough. This does not really make the Crystal run any more legit, just a caveat.

The White 2 redemption story of originally playing with an unsuccessful team and then replaying with such a strong and cohesive team (And falling in love with the game) was pretty cool. Having a completely different experience of the same game based on the team you use is an incredible aspect of Pokemon.

I also still have some of my Pokemon from my original run of Pokemon sapphire. My original Swampert Skip is 22 years old at this point. When my friends and I realized last year that some of the Pokemon sitting in my Pokemon home account where old enough to legally drink we used it as an excuse to go to a local bar and celebrate Skip's birthday with a few drinks. One of the most surreal experiences of my adult life, the bartender's too probably

I love this video! I enjoy seeing the stories behind so many of your playthroughs. Your Pokemon GSC video from 2019 helped reinvigorate my interest in Pokemon at a time where my love for the series was waning. Nowadays, I find myself playing through Pokemon games in a way similar to yours. I put so much time into preparing teams of Pokemon that either share a common theme among them or utilize fun strategies I hadn't tried before. During my playthroughs, I like coming up with some headcanon for how my unique team of 'mons came together. This way of approaching the games sparked a new interest in other roleplaying games like Elden Ring and BG3. After watching this video and seeing your drawings of your teams, I now really want to get into drawing. That looks so much fun. Thanks Tama, you're really cool😎

"I played until I got stuck, and then started over from the beginning" That was totally me when I was a kid. And now (also as a 30 year old) I'm more focused on at least beating the games I own, if not 100%'ing them. I think that change in mentality is partly born out of a desire to feel like I'm getting my money's worth out of the games I buy. Also, weirdly, I feel like I sort of owe it to the game devs to actually see all the stuff they worked so hard to make? idk if anyone else feels that way about it.

For me it was definitely reletable, in the sense that I overanalyze, overthink about teams, lore inside the team, stories for team members, characters etc, it's just that I never write them down like you do. Hello Tama! I just wanted to comment and say that I did “genuinely” level an in-game team in Yellow version to 100 for my own Stadium play through a few years ago and it was as you expected: I used the Dodrio game boy, and lots of mind-numbing Elite 4 runs + the Chanseys in the last floor of Cerulean Cave. I didn’t bother with things like stat XP or anything, just pure level grinding for the prime cup, but I just wanted to say that someone out there has done this terrible, terrible task!

I've been playing since Yellow came out, but my favourite team was a Gen 6 triples team, centred around Mega Blastoise with Water Spout, Drizzle and Tailwind.
Man, I took down so many teams of 6 legendaries and made other players rage quite it was crazy!
Sure, I lost a few times but they were usually people who had a decent strategy.

i’d like to talk about my most recent playthrough team, in pokemon emerald!
it was a 6 of: Swampert, Hariyama, Aggron, Flygon, Heracross, and Walrein!
    - Swampert gets some strong stab moves with surf + earthquake. Its typing means that it can handle a lot of pokemon very well! In the end a ran a set of Toxic, Surf, Earthquake and Ice Beam.
    - Heracross was probably my strongest pokemon out of damage output. I ran swarm with endure, megahorn, reversal and brick break. Megahorn accuracy can be dissapointing, but it did pretty well. it was a ground resist too
    - Walrein was picked up with thick fat to help in the wallace battle, because swampert really isnt a good check to water types. I ran a set of rest, blizzard, surf and body slam, usually holding a chesto berry. it worked well as a special wall but i found the ice typing made it hard tp use against any physical types e.g rock, steel, fighting
    - Aggron was terrible. rock ruins the steel typing significantly. it gets no real good moves through level up and you dont wanna waste any tms on it (i let flygon have earthquake). It did nothing except carry rock smash and strength tbh. the only battle it was good in was vs norman because it learn protect as a lairon
    - Flygon is hard because for a lot of the playthrough it felt like dead wait. Trapinch is very frail and vibrava is weak, but it was worth it once I taught it Earthquake. It wasnt massively strong but its the pokemon i used vs sydney in the elite four.
    - Hariyama had fake out, facade, bulk up and vital throw. it had guts as an ability so it didnt fear burn or paralysis as much. i found fakeout could get a lot of good chip for other pokemon to finish off
the main flaw of the team was i really had no counter to ghost type. I just needed to wittle them down with swampert or walrein or flygon, but this was hard as will-o-wisp hurt two of those

I’m so impressed by how meticulously recorded all these play through teams are. I was inspired to go look back at my old Hall of Fames and see what my teams were and there were some that I had no idea were on my teams.

    My pokemon team: by gen
Gen 1: Pikachu (Yellow version), Nidoking (strong, earthquake stab, and overall a neat guy), Clefable (bulky, useful tms, she's nice), Vaporeon (surf stab, ice beam/blizzard spam, and eevee is my one of my favorite pokemon), Kadabra (can't trade play on 3ds, psychic go broom, scary guy), Dodrio (strong attacker, fly hm, and and underrated choice).
Gen 2: Cyndaquil/totodile (great starters, especially with elemental punches, nice pokemon), Espeon (Psychic powerhouse, Umbreon I've never use), Ampharos (best pokemon in existence, fire punch, can't live without him), Red Gyarados (powerful attacker, water hm user, shiny dope), Pidegeot (cool pokemon, fly user)
Honestly I can't remember what pokemon I use for gen 3 and onwards since it been awhile. Hopefully my team choices aren't bad lol

This video had me thinking about my previous teams.
-Started my Pokemon journey in Sinnoh in gen 4, unfortunately for the entirety of gen 4 (Sinnoh and Johto) I am unsure as to what Pokemon I used outside of the Hall of Fame which are teams of just starters and legendaries.
-Gen 5 I have a box full of gen 5 Pokemon that I think are cool but I only remember half of the team I used in Black, and in Black 2 I apparently used Emboar and Sunkurn for most of my gym battles (with Magby occasionally being on my team) before I decided to only use Fire Starters and Flareon for the E4 and Champion.
-Y is the first game that I have a record of the Pokemon I used during my playthrough and E4 and champion battles.
-X I have a record for the second time I played through the game in French, but not when I first played through the game in English.
-Omega Ruby I only know of 2 Pokemon I used during my playthrough being my starter and a Manectric, the Hall of Fame having my 5 most sentimental Pokemon from across gen 4-6 (my starter Inviur the Infernape, Victoria the Volcarona I hatched from the egg gift in Black, Luke the Lucario gifted in Y, Marley the Manectric caught on Route 110 in Omega Ruby, and Brave the Bravery obtained via online trade).
With the exception of Omega Ruby, gen 6 to present I have been able to keep track of the teams that I have used, including the team I used when I decided to reset Platinum in 2018.

I have been trying to beat Stadium 2 with my team in Crystal. On round 2 but I accidentally over leveled my Pokemon to 55 thinking they'd qualify; didn't read the fine print. So, now I'm completely screwed unless I try and hack them to be properly leveled, lol. That's my fault, just felt stupid and unmotivated once I realized that. But the journey until then was fun and very rewarding. Something I always wanted to accomplish as a kid.

Your competitive battling story makes me want to share mine, if you don't mind:
I'm pretty much an average casual player, where I go through the story with the vibes of whatever pokémon I come across, in these games. I had finished XY, and a younger cousin challenged me to battle (I think), where my story team was flattened by his typical child brain all legendary + starter team. I took it personally, and learned competitive, thankfully quite accessible in XY. I wanna say channels in the same circle as Tama's were invaluable in learning from scratch, and of course Smogon. I would not see that cousin for another year, if not two, which gave me a long time to build a comp team made of 0 Uber pokémon - because I needed to prove a point, I guess.
Once it was ready, I did get to test it on a different but similar cousin, with a similar team. My shell break baton pass Huntail was a little shoddy, but sweepers like Chandelure and Gliscor worked as intended ; paraflincer Togekiss was more absurd than expected ; and toxic Aegislash could tank even a Ho-Oh Sacred Fire or two. Complete success!
The next time that I see the cousin that I spent so much time preparing to battle, he tells me that he got his game card stolen. I never got that redemption battle.
I don't regret it at all, mind you. Learned a lot about an aspect of these games, played in different ways, gateway'd me into shiny breeding / hunting (also quite accessible in XY), and learned to love some specific pokémon of course (was ecstatic to play Chandelure in Pokkén Tournament).
The cousin that I "practiced" did get his own redemption, when he later challenged me with a team for double battle, which mine wasn't prepared for.

Am trying to complete me original Black cartridge. Battle subway is tuff. Been breeding for good IV’s. Trying to get a perfect 5 on Staryu. Really loved the last one going over how you plan to complete your game and thinking of picking up that kind of planning this summer. Am watching this video still trying to get perfect 5 IV’s on a Staryu (best I have is 4!).

Funnily enough, the only part of my original Gen 1 team I remember is that I picked Bulbasaur. Charmander was actually my favorite pokemon, but I picked Bulbasaur because I thought it would make me cool at school. (My logic was, everybody who picked Red would take Charmander and everybody who picked Blue would take Squirtle, so if I picked Bulbasaur everybody would be impressed that I had a rare starter... That plan did not work out.)
Anyway, I do remember thinking that Zapdos was my favorite of the legendary trio because it wasn't weak to lightning. Also I used a Mewtwo eventually. I taught it Mist for some reason because it was the only pokemon that could learn that move in my party.
Anyway, once I tried restarting my game to take a Charmander as my starter and I got so sad about losing my Ivysaur that I actually started crying. Eventually I realized that, as long as I didn't save the game, I would still have my Ivysaur. That was the only time I tried to reset my game.
Random side note: I also cried when the S.S Anne left port without me. I watched the anime and thought that if I stayed on the ship I would get to go to an island with giant pokemon. Gen 1 was definitely my most emotional generation.

I’ve never seen any of your content before, but I’m glad I tuned in. :) pretty sure the earliest game I ever played was Pokémon (my brother’s copies) and seeing you walk through all the years you’ve had with Pokémon made me feel really comfy and nostalgic. Thanks for making this video!

NGL in the first half I was like WTF is Feral about you in this video, seems generally wholesome as you talk about and go into your memories and indulge in nostalgia about the old playthroughs, then you talked about Gen 3 and Colosseum.
And I realised maybe that's the feral part, still much more tame than the original video you talk about Colosseum in (idk when that was, was fairly recent I think)
Kinda curious about you naming this series Feral Woman .... , if you talked about this before somewhere, cuz feral is the last thing I'd associate with you based on the videos I've watched of you, obsessive probably, but not feral. but that obsessive passion towards the series is what attracted me to the channel in the first place and I guess the want to somewhat have an opinionated conversation about Pokémon, even if just in my head as a kid.
What you did with notepad I did with an actual physical notebook, and I had maps drawn of the in game region as well to denote where I caught certain Pokémon, alongside other notes, it was pretty neat at the time also denotes how much time I had as a school kid from skipping my actual homework.

I haven't gone back and watched the HGSS video yet so I am only just experiencing this now, but there's something about your unscripted delivery that's just really extra nice and cosy. Your enjoyment of this video format really does shine through in your presentation, and it's both an odd experience as a long time UA-cam viewer, in a good way, and a really nice point of difference from the usual scripted videos. It feels like a peek behind the scenes almost, really casual and super chill, kind of like a podcast. A fun lil video, I hope you make more on other stuff when you feel like it

I also got Zapdos as a kid cuz I couldn't figure out the puzzles for the other birds. Zapdos was easily my best Pokemon and helped me finally beat the Elite 4, and now it's my favorite Pokemon 😊

My favorite way to play is by only using new Pokémon (I do count regional variants as “new” Pokémon), so far I’ve really enjoyed playing the new games this way
