Personally I consider gen 1 and 2 the same because of trading and the stadium series… kinda beautiful when you get a charizard with outrage by breeding or when you use a tm on a gen 1 pokemon and trade it to gen 2.
There is a strong argument that gen 1 and 2 are the same. A lot of gen 2 Pokemon were originally designed for gen 1 but we're scrapped/ removed due to hardware limitations. And then used in gen 2. Gen 2 was still created and directed by Satoshi Tagiri( the George Lucas of Pokemon) and then he left Game Freak after Crystal. Ken Suigimori and his team still had the same design ethos from gen 1 and still created the monsters on Japanese water color. Big reason why the franchise felt so different from gen 3 on. Game freak also wanted more "softer" "rounder" designed which has continued to this day. Alot folks refer to this era as the classical era( including the TCG that ended until skyridge) But I like to refer as the " Real Pocket Monsters Era".

I was like “dear god” it was like finding the ark of the covenant, so I fixed the save battery and slapped it into my gameboy advance that I played sliver on 20 years before, and am have a absolute blast.
You'll love it I'm sure. More on the way... eventually? I've finished Red and Blue and writing takes ages, plus Yellow, Green, Red JP, Blue JP, the remakes, the second set of remakes.... but eventually.
I will never get tired of hearing of Gen 2. You’re probably done with it, but I’d like to hear your thoughts on Pokémon Stadium 2 since it goes hand in hand with GSC.
This is crazy in depth. Ive watched far too many retrospective and analysis videos of all gens and ive seen a few in depth ones but not to this extent. Great job. I find gold and silver to be overrated as hell for a number of reasons. However, Crystal is top tier pokemon and fixes almost all of the issues i had with Gold and Silver. Oc i loved GS at the time it came out but Crystal is just so much better. I LOVE Crystal. The biggest improvements being the ability to get elemental stones during the main story, which opens up team building tremendously, and the addition of the random egg you get at the daycare which is very useful. The moving around of pokemon wild encounter rates is also a huge improvement.
Wonderful video, thanks for taking the time to make this. I only wish you would have mentioned how Scizor can earn Baton Pass through breeding, making him a pretty nasty pick with Swords Dance, which buffs Fury Cutter and Steel Wing - both STAB - on the rare occasion the player wouldn't be better off passing those Attack buffs onto another Pokemon.
Crystal was my first Pokemon game, back in 2nd grade. I beat it with a Feraligatr that knew Surf, Cut, Strength, and Hydro Pump. And a Kadabra that I didn't know needed trade to evolve. But he did learn Zap Cannon which was cool. It took a long time to get past the E4 the first time, let me tell you. And I never did beat Red, not until SoulSilver years later.
Lol my original party was a Typhlosion named AAAAAAAAAA that had fire blast, dynamic punch, cut, and strength, a Nidorino because I never knew about the once a week Clefairy dance, and a Poliwhirl, because I equally never knew how to find Water Stones
Looking forward to going through this today and tomorrow, leaving this comment preemptively because a nearly 4 hour video on one of my favorite games already deserves an algorithm boost
I love Gen 2 sprites and animations. Not that they're the best in the series or anything, but they are just so creative and charming. The way the UI wobbles around or reacts to parts of moves, the limited palettes, it's all so fun and kitch.
@@whiskeysour1179 The dithering on Gen 2 sprites is crazy and tbh I like them better than the Gen 3 sprites which are kinda all over in quality. Gen 4+5 got it beat for sure but I looove the look of GSC
wow this is a big review, thanks! I'm so excited to watch it all. But maybe i'll wait till I finish HeartGold and Crystal. I always wanted to own Crystal but couldn't afford it as a kid.
You said that this is the only game without a good breeding path, but that's not true. It's just vertical in these games instead of horizontal like the others, but there's a nice long strip between Route 34 and Goldenrod City. Also, breeding for shinies isn't 1/64 except in the very best situations. It can range anywhere from 1/64 to literally impossible to get a shiny from breeding. Due to the fact that shininess is based on DVs and the way DV inheritance works, it's only possible to breed a shiny from an opposite-gender parent that either is shiny or has specific Defense and Special DVs. Ditto is always the parent to pass down DVs so it effectively takes the place of both genders for this. So if you're breeding with a shiny or shiny-capable Ditto, you have a 1/64 chance. If you're breeding something that can only be one gender with an opposite-gender parent that's shiny or shiny-compatible, like Chansey with a shiny male, you'll have a 1/64 chance. But if you're, for example, breeding a female starter with a shiny male you'll only have a 1/64 chance on _female_ offspring and a 0% chance on male offspring, resulting in an overall 1/512 chance. But then there's stuff that is guaranteed to never result in a shiny, like if you have a shiny Chansey it will never breed another shiny Chansey since the offspring will always get its DVs from the non-Chansey parent and you can't breed two shiny-capable Pokémon together because the mechanic to stop breeding parents with children will consider them related. And of course, if neither parent is shiny or a shiny-capable non-shiny they'll never produce shiny offspring. Of course, since you have a guaranteed encounter with shiny Gyarados, which can learn Mimic by TM in gen 1 and gen 1 has a glitch that uses Mimic to make a wild Ditto copy your Pokémon's DVs it's not _too_ hard to get your hands on a shiny Ditto to use for breeding at that 1/64 rate.
In GSC, there are NPCs along the central road in Goldenrod that move back and forth in your path. You can eventually use Nugget brodge which is moderately better but requires a lot of flying. Also very good insight on the shiny breeding, I appreciate it a bunch!
@@ntmaproductions The path I used was off center a tile or two to the East, but as long as you didn't slow down the NPCs would almost never step in front of you. They have default positions and only move randomly while you're in town with them, so you'd need to roll unfavorably like 3 times in a row for them to step into the path. If you slowed down, like not immediately reversing direction when you hit the gate house to Route 35, they'd have more time to path far enough to block you however. It's been a while, but I did quite a lot of breeding back in the day. Honestly I miss the orderly back and forth of breeding in the tile based games compared to the 3D games' "spin the thumbstick like crazy" method.
@@RikkuEcRud I always seemed to have bad luck and needed to veery every few laps. It's not a *terrible* route but ita not nearly as clean and optimal as later generations
I’d like to technically add a 4th way to get stones in G/S/C If you have a copy of Pokemon Stadium 2 and get far enough along in G/S/C you can transfer them through the Pokemon Lab in Stadium 2 using the Colour and Metal Cases if you have a copy of R/B/Y you can use the Missing No. glitch to duplicate those items, throw out 30 of them because the item in your 6th slot is duplicated by 4 times so you end up with 120 and to prevent the games from freaking out it’s best you throw 30 of them.
I'm sure this has been pointed out, but I'm pretty sure that if you KO any of the legendary beasts, they will respawn once you defeat the E4 again. Fantastic video essay regardless!
Legendaries and other fixed spawns (ie. Sudowoodo, Snorlax) didn't start respawning until gen 4. Sadly it's a little easy to get locked out in this game 😅. This also means in Emerald you can get softlocked from getting the Gen 2 starters as it requires catching the whole Hornn dex. I apprrciate the compliment though!
@@ntmaproductions Oh dang. It's been a hit minute since I played gen 2, I coulda sworn this was the case. I stand corrected! But honestly, great content. I've been on a gen 2 hyper fixation lately and your videos have helped scratch my itch lol
it's niche in the sense that it's rare to see in the single player and has a low chance of applying each effect- more of an edgecase than niche but still
GSC were definitely peak handheld games on the GameBoy Color. If pokemon had ended there it would of been fine. Thankfully pokemon continued and we got so many ither great games. So many things about this game just hasnt been replicated before. The region of johto is beautiful, timed events are interesting, and day/night cycle makes the world more immersive. Johto is a region where yes you can get to the elite 4 in under 40 hours. But it really is a reigon/game where you spend time backtracking and exploring
I remember my first time beating the battle tower level 70. Shuckle Tyranitar and Snorlax. I ended up using a Blissey over Tyranitar later in 80 90 and 100. I settled on a toxic/sandstorm stall strategy with mainly Shuckle. Using Snorlax and Blissey just as secondary strategies. Rest bodyslam earthquake sleep talk Snorlax. And icebeam thunderbolt psychic and softboiled on Blissey. I loved the challenge at first. I was the only one in my friend group and school that actually managed to beat any stage there. Then, as I cleared it more and more, I was quickly disappointed that there weren't better rewards. I already maxed out vitamins on my mons before even my first victory. Being rewarded with them at every level and that being the only reward was a huge letdown.
Lmao yeah, you need pretty well maxed stuff to egen attempt it so getting vitamins is a weak reward. Later battle towers/facilities/etc definitely make it more entiving via itneresting and unique battle items
Am I the only one who encountered Lucia in helix forest sometimes? Idk if that’s an actual fact and it probably isn’t but I think when I was a 7-8 yr old that happened.
While I love the Pokemon games, I mean, I grew up with them. I was born the same year the Game Boy came out, and I had one pretty much since 1990. I had all 3 versions of Gen 1 and 2. Played all 6 games to the end. Traded with friends, battled with friends, brought the games to school. It was a ton of fun.... BUT......It's so hard to go back to them nowadays. They're not bad games, and I'm not saying I'm a big fan of the super easy hand-holding route the new games are going. But it's hard to go back to the bare minimum of a Pokemon game now. If I ever want to play Gen 1 and 2, I have to play rom hacks, or at least play HG/SS on DS. A few hours ago, I started up the rom hack "Crystal Clear", which is pretty neat. Lets you make your own character, lets you pick which region (Johto or Kanto) to start in, and even lets you pick which town you start in. The whole game is also opened up to make it more of an open world, letting you do the gyms in any order you want (the gym levels scale with how many badges you have). It lets you re-battle gyms at higher difficulties if you want, there's a whole new Elite 4 (as well as letting you battle the original E4). There's new moves, the Pokedex gives you a TON of extra information, there's a thing in-game to tell you where all the move tutors and HMs are, there's an npc to trade-back Pokemon to get the trade evolutions without actually trading. Hell, even minor things like being able to change the music for battles and stuff. Some Quality of Life stuff too like disabling Nurse Joy Pokemon Center dialogue to make healing quicker, or skipping the intro animation for wild battles. It also adds in the missing Kanto areas. Polished Crystal is another one I like a lot. It takes Crystal, but tries to modernize it. You can get all 251 Pokemon without trading, there's a fake Wonder Trade system, all the extra decorations from HG/SS to make the game look nicer, also adds the missing Kanto areas, you get EXP when catching Pokemon, a lot of moves and stats have been updated to match later generation games. Both are great ways to play through Gen 2. I think I prefer Polished Crystal if I want something that matches Gen 2 a bit more. But Crystal Clear is a lot of fun because of how open it is and the ability to start wherever you want. Makes it more interesting since you're not just playing through the same areas in the same order that you always have. I haven't found a hack that quite matches those for Gen 1, but there's still some good ones out there. Red ++ is probably the best. There's also ones that turn them into GBC games, with full color. And ones that add in stuff from the leaked Spaceworld Gold/Silver betas. There's also completely new games like Pokemon Brown, and Prism.
Crystal Clear is interesting. I've messed with it a bit and the QoL stuff is extremely nice, although tbh i find that making it a boss rush type game where you can do anything means the world is kinda glossed over whic hurts the atmosphere I love so much in GSC, although it's going for something completely different. Prism is one I can get behind, really a technical marvel in a lot of ways
@Almighty Coon I'm not gonna argue, but can I ask WHY you dislike Crystal Clear? And yeah, Brown and Prism aren't anything amazing, but they're still more Pokemon to play, and I think that was the point. To make a "new" Pokemon game for those that want more Game Boy Pokemon without re-playing the same games for the hundredth time. Personally, I highly enjoyed Crystal Clear. But that's because I've played GSC so many times already, that it was nice to play in the same world, but have the freedom to go where I want. Not being held by the hand and led through the same places in the same order I've already done dozens of times before. It's nothing special either, just a different way to play Gen 2 for those of us that don't wanna play through the same exact thing again, but still want Gen 2. As for playing past gen 2, I dunno. I personally haven't really played Gen 6 and later. But I've enjoyed Gen 1-5 just fine. Gen 4 being my favorite. I'm definitely not a fan of the handholding they do in the newer games though.
I cant remember if it was my 9th or 10th birthday but I got Gold and Crystal. My mom told me she was told she was the first to buy Crystal that day. I still remember my first initial shock of the day and night cycle, and how interacting with pokemon changed with it.
Ledian’s “alien” aspects come from it being based on kamen rider/super sentai/power rangers aesthetics Edit: okay its weird you knew the tsuchinoko for dunsparce but not the above; the later seems a lot more esoteric
Honestly not sure here either. Most likely a cultural aspect I’m missing but I think the above average fighting types (which is a low key stand in for justice) moves as the generations goes on reinforces the idea.
@@obviousalias132 A lot of Kamens are based on bugs, but to my recollection none specifically Ladybugs. Perhaps a designed backwards situation where a Kamen rider Bug Pokemon needed a pre-evo and the easiest solution was just... a bug
@@ntmaproductions I feel maybe something to do with the spots/stars but thats just speculation on my part. I love Gen 2, it’s just so… I have no clue it was like the Gen 5 of pre Gen 5 in how it looks, the Semi-dynamic sprites are cool, the gameplay is fun if repetitive, and I can honestly blow through one of these games in like a week if I’m busy so they’re like popcorn gaming for me Edit: I’d just like to respectfully mention you seem to miss some things, like tackle not having 50 power until Gen 5 or shadow ball being physical and thusly amazing on the Ratata line, which is just a minor thing I don’t hate the vid, I absolutely love it
I'm sure there's plenty I missed because I was all over the place lmao. I did mention in the mechanics section that all Ghost moves are physical, but I don't think I specifically applied it to Shadow Ball's insane coverage 😅
@@ntmaproductions it only does because with it Ratata can have better coverage in the case of rock types and other types that normal can’t really steamroll for one reason for another, so it matters at least to me, if you think I’m overdoing it tho that’s fair I’m a no-life teen so what do know lmao 😂 Edit: also the heart disappeared when I edited the comment and I 🥲

This video is amazing mate carry on the great work! Currently playing through gold for the first time now!
You'll love it I'm sure. More on the way... eventually? I've finished Red and Blue and writing takes ages, plus Yellow, Green, Red JP, Blue JP, the remakes, the second set of remakes.... but eventually.

I think one of the potential upsides of the weird level curve is that you can switch over to newer, low level pokemon.
Your subscriber count is criminally low. I love this long form analysis and your opinions. Thanks man
“Heracross fucks” killed me lmao
The bell is 100% run for this channel. This is incredible.
this was incredible, thank you for doing such a comprehensive view of the game! ♥
well thank you!
also I have a playlist of the rest and RSE should be out soon (i hope lol)
Oh my god this is so underrated. Keep up the good work man.
the opening music just brought floods back from memories of being a 5 year old...
I will never get tired of hearing of Gen 2. You’re probably done with it, but I’d like to hear your thoughts on Pokémon Stadium 2 since it goes hand in hand with GSC.
Eventually 😅
Pokemon stadium made gen 2 the best gen and gamefreak is insane for having never made a modern pokemon stadium.
The hardware definitely held them back from their vision, but it’s a marvel they fit what they had in there at all.
I love Scizor, but I gotta at least attempt to keep the pace
When going over the field moves you forgot to mention that Rock Smash has a chance of lowering defense. Which certainly adds to its usefulness.
I mean that's true but at 20 BP in Gen 2, it's still extremely rough. That's half of what tackle does, even if you get STAB on RS
Looking forward to going through this today and tomorrow, leaving this comment preemptively because a nearly 4 hour video on one of my favorite games already deserves an algorithm boost
thank you, enjoy!

This video is awesome man! Keep up the good work
thank you! i have one on HGSS as well
Bite/Crunch best dark move lmao
I’d like to technically add a 4th way to get stones in G/S/C
If you have a copy of Pokemon Stadium 2 and get far enough along in G/S/C you can transfer them through the Pokemon Lab in Stadium 2 using the Colour and Metal Cases if you have a copy of R/B/Y you can use the Missing No. glitch to duplicate those items, throw out 30 of them because the item in your 6th slot is duplicated by 4 times so you end up with 120 and to prevent the games from freaking out it’s best you throw 30 of them.
Awesome content! Red/Blue/Yellow was great introduction to Pokemon games, but Silver/Gold/Crystal laid the foundation of what Pokemon games are today.

Crystal my favorite pokemon game of all time
GSC were definitely peak handheld games on the GameBoy Color.
I can only imagine how much time and effort you put into this video. Thanks for making this!
a lot 😅 and this is only half, HGSS part is out too. we'll see about a return to Pokemon soon, this blowing up is a good excuse
are ya winnin son
Wow, those been 3 tough, but good hours to spend my life with
I remember my first time beating the battle tower level 70.
Awesome retrospective!!! Love your work! Keep it up!

Think I've played more gen 2 hacks than anything past gen 3
Thats ok, but remember that a mod doesnt represent the original experience.
Sickk job bro this is awesome!
Thank you!!
I cant remember if it was my 9th or 10th birthday but I got Gold and Crystal. My mom told me she was told she was the first to buy Crystal that day. I still remember my first initial shock of the day and night cycle, and how interacting with pokemon changed with it.
I was 6 when I got crystal for a birthday
Get a stone attach it as an item on a pokemon. Do the clone glitch on the pc. Now you have multiple stones. Same with rare candy's.
Same with master balls tbh ;)
Ledian’s “alien” aspects come from it being based on kamen rider/super sentai/power rangers aesthetics
Edit: okay its weird you knew the tsuchinoko for dunsparce but not the above; the later seems a lot more esoteric
I had a suspicion it was, but my Kamen lore might be missing a step in that it's hard to understand why it comes from Ledyba. Nice insight though.
Since we are talking name origins and I just got to the part Mareep is Philip K Dick (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep/Bladerunner) and also an anagram of ampere (and probably smushing Mary and Bo Peep together). I’ve always been impressed with how layered Pokémon designs especially having to translate so many so the puns work in other languages.

I love Gen 2, it’s just so… I have no clue it was like the Gen 5 of pre Gen 5 in how it looks, the Semi-dynamic sprites are cool, the gameplay is fun if repetitive, and I can honestly blow through one of these games in like a week if I’m busy so they’re like popcorn gaming for me
Edit: I’d just like to respectfully mention you seem to miss some things, like tackle not having 50 power until Gen 5 or shadow ball being physical and thusly amazing on the Ratata line, which is just a minor thing I don’t hate the vid, I absolutely love it
I'm sure there's plenty I missed because I was all over the place lmao. I did mention in the mechanics section that all Ghost moves are physical, but I don't think I specifically applied it to Shadow Ball's insane coverage 😅
@@ntmaproductions it only does because with it Ratata can have better coverage in the case of rock types and other types that normal can’t really steamroll for one reason for another, so it matters at least to me, if you think I’m overdoing it tho that’s fair I’m a no-life teen so what do know lmao 😂

I recently got Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal on my 3DS XL and I can't wait to play through them, lol. I never played the older games, I started off with Gen 4 and Pokemon Heartgold and Soulsilver already spoiled me, lol (along with Platinum). I still have Heartgold and Soulsilver and been replaying through them, I even did the shiny Pokemon glitch where shinies appears often with Jigglypuff Cute Charm just by setting a specific date, time and pressing the buttons at the right moment to get the right trainer ID to get some free shines with the same gender. But I bought the virtual console games on my 3DS XL when I heard about the eShop shutting down soon and I've been curious to play through the older games and then transfer them into Pokemon Bank then to Home.

I am certain that Crobat in Silver's team was purposeful. No evidence to back this certainty but it just makes way too much sense.
It's hard to say since he had it even when Crobat had a different evo method in the Soaceworld Protos, but I like to imagine that it's either intentional or a happy coincidence, given his arc.
