LYRICS
Sit around and watch the tube, but nothing's on
I change the channels for an hour or two
Twiddle my thumbs just for a bit
I'm sick of all the same old shit
In a house with unlocked doors
And I'm fucking lazy
Bite my lip and close my eyes
Take me away to paradise
I'm so damn bored I'm going blind
And I smell like shit
Peel me off this Velcro seat and get me moving
I sure as hell can't do it by myself
I'm feeling like a dog in heat
Barred indoors from the summer street
I locked the door to my own cell
And I lost the key
Bite my lip and close my eyes
Take me away to paradise
I'm so damn bored I'm going blind
And I smell like shit
I got no motivation
Where is my motivation?
No time for the motivation
Smoking my inspiration
Sit around and watch the phone, but no one's calling
Call me pathetic, call me what you will
My mother says to get a job
But she don't like the one she's got
When masturbation's lost its fun
You're fucking lonely
Bite my lip and close my eyes
Take me away to paradise
I'm so damn bored
I'm going blind
And loneliness has to suffice
Bite my lip and close my eyes
I was slipping away to paradise
Some say, "Quit or I'll go blind."
But it's just a myth

I actually worked on this video on the very small lighting crew. I think there were 2-3 of us. So many years ago. We shot it in their little apartment which was more like a basement under a house in Oakland. And they played Woodstock the same year. There was no way at the time to know how huge they would become. Big fan ever since that day!
thats crazy dude, did u ever meet them again?
This video is what made me notice my favourite band of all time.
Did you talk to them
Yoo that’s crazy, did you ever meet them
@@ojisanjiggy4786 I do not. What department?
Everyone talking about the bass but I just love how smooth and seamless the drums sound in this song
Good for you, but if you don't like this bassline you must check the medic
Elver Galarga nah for sure this is one of my favorite songs for bass but as a drummer myself it’s really catchy and I think it deserves more love
AlexontheRun the whole thing just fit together so well. Fun fact-Mike Dirnt was trippin balls when he came up with the bass line
Really?
2:03 press F to pay respect to the cools cymbals
Mike Dirnt is such an underrated bassist. He might not be the most technical but his bass lines absolutely carry the song so well.
i reckon a three piece is the purest form of a rock band. it requires understated virtuosity. Greenday. Cream. Jimi Hendrix Experience. the Mark of Cain. Primus. the Police. Helmet. Nirvana. Nomeansno. Lard. Muse. etcetera, etcetera...
@@mikeywatts322 Muse, Primus, and the Police are virtuosos the rest are just really good rock bands.

Looks great, only pet peeve is that the aspect ratio is wrong in some of the clips but still, hope we can get more re-scans.
it really looks amazing, Im glad aparently they filmed these old videos on 16mm or 35mm this totally looks like a re-scan from the original film.

I’m learning it right now. Not hard, just gotta remember all the notes and hit them
Just don't tell her the lyrics

One thing I’ve always appreciated about this video is the detail of Billie’s microphone. The crushed screen and ring of tape, sometimes generations of tape rings, usually to cover the hole left from removal of a thumb switch or to make fit in a stressed mic stand… the fleeting apprehension of putting my mouth against another one night after night, across varied pools of bacteria is one of the grossest things I feel nostalgia for. Lovely stuff.
This is probably the most relatable Green Day song ever.
I seriously doubt it as this song is about being addicted to masturbating, but it is possible that you find it the most relatable. I get this seasonally like primarily in the winter summer spring and fall
@@arctrog It's partly about masturbation. Not the whole song is about it.
Arctrog one line is. The rest is about dealing with angst and boredom.
Its more relatable than ever in the past days

I wish this was in Tony Hawks underground, also amazing there was such great songs out there
I remember buying this album, walking out of Our Price, putting the tape in my walkman, hitting play and my brain exploding. It was an incredible time to be young. Absolutely iconic album, every song rocks.

Holy shit, two decades... where did my time go?
I remember how I felt like this song really describes me back when it came out... still does, actually. Proof that having a job that pays more than the average person can spend in a lifetime doesn't change jack.
The song still rocks like it did back then. And no, their new stuff ain't worse. They changed, of course. Most people do. I mean, hey, two decades. That's enough time for a human to grow up, from birth to adulthood.

When Billie gave me a shuffle beat for Longview, I was frying on acid so hard. I was laying up against the wall with my bass lying on my lap. It just came to me. I said, 'Billie, check this out. Isn't this the wackiest thing you've ever heard?' Later, it took me a long time to be able to play it, but it made sense when I was on drugs." - Mike Dirnt in Rolling Stone magazine, 1995.

Summer of 2006, my friends had just graduated and my dad ( RIP DADDY) was working out of town so I had the whole house to myself, I bought this album, went and bought a 25 sack of bud from my friend (RIP MIKE.) I must keep Green day and punk alive so everyone spread the joy of Green day songs as much as you can.

I'm 62 now and old time classic Rock n roller and for some unknown, ungodly reason this frickin song just keeps getting better and better every time I listen to it. Well done lads! If this song doesn't lower your cholesterol by a few points or keeps a few of them hemorrhoids at bay then I suppose your just not playing it loud enough. Take that big pharma!
Cool 😂
Steve mate, i was looking through the comments looking for one that struck a chord, and its you.
Im going to be 63 soon and its very likely weve travelled similar paths. I just have this thing with this song just like you. This is the first ever song i heard of Green Day. I cant say im a big fan, cause i really only know their hits, but this song has something else, it has a really powerful, driving pull to it when that fast part kicks in. Its superbly crafted and its still my fave of theirs.
I got here by accident, i experienced Punk as it happened in 76 at only 16 and the next 6yrs produced brilliant music and bands and some of the wildest partying days ever for me. The late 70s was experimental, and boy did we experiment! I only got here because i was listening to Rough Boy from ZZ Top, its my fave of theirs, and im not a huge fan of theirs really, its just a superb song with great guitars, and i feel Rough Boy is what sums up that life and maybe we always stay that way. So it brought me to 100 best metal songs its called i think.
I was looking at them all, and a lot were "hits" and then Change by The Deftones was there, so i do like that and played it and then i saw this and said "Yes! Havent heard this in ages" Yep, im just like you, we may be 62, but i have done some serious hard rockin and have lived to tell the tale of life in the fast lane. It nearly took me, but i made it through. Thanks for inspiring me mate.
You tell big pharma Steve, bc you're right!!! 😂
Hope you're doing ok man 🤘🏻😊

I miss these times when bands just played what felt good, looked however they wanted...good times, good music
True, hard to believe this came out in 1994. time flys
LOL...they didn't look however they wanted really, they just didn't think about it too much and didn't care. Now the current young generation is so self absorbed, and obsessed with their social media, they have to treat everything like a TREND. We were completely against trends in those days, and hated the media trying to cram things down our throats, which is why Green day is wearing clothes that honestly looked plain back then... It was the only way to get to us! Nobody tried too hard to be anything in particular, and I really miss that. Now everything is a trend, even the stuff me and my dumb friends wore back in 1994 simply because it was cheap and our parents would buy it for us. I feel sorry for kids nowadays, they are really clueless and have nothing solid to call their own anymore. A generation of FOLLOWERS... Pity.
Very few bands actually got away with this... Usually it was very controlled with Label executives.
They filmed this the day after a big party. Billie Joe woke up hungover and was surprised at first to see the camera crew in his house. They truly did not give af

Well said!
I am a huge fan of what some call "authentic punk" and I've always said Green Day is truly real punk. Always have been and even when they went mainstream they always kept the same format so screw anyone saying they're sell outs. They're just good, creative and talented, just like Chili Peppers and should never have to apologize for being good.
LMAOOOO
Well said
Suave punk
I wouldn't call red hot chilli peppers punk but green day definitely. They believed in the politics, they made punk sounding music, I don't know why people say they are not.
@@kazooplayer3People said they sold out when they left Lookout and signed with Warner. That was a big deal at the time. They were leaving a label that basically help build the 90s punk scene. It was almost like they were telling everyone that they were now too good for them.
I get it. I don't know if I agree with it, but I get it. Green Day had bigger goals than just being a punk band. They wanted to be the best band of any kind. And Lookout wasn't going to be able to get them there so they had to cut ties. But in doing so, they hurt a lot of feelings.
However, they did have support. Screeching weasel wrote _I wrote Holden Coulfield_ as a sign of support for them and Dirnt played bass on the song. Some people got it. Some felt abandoned.
It's all been patched up though. I think as people have grown older and more mature, they understand the choices Green Day made and why they made them. The hard feelings are mostly gone.
But it didn't just come out of nowhere. They were part of a community. And then they chose to leave that community for something bigger. You're gunna take some heat for that.
Edit: but if they hadn't left Lookout, I doubt very much we would have seen the same level of pop/punk bands in the late 90s. Sum41, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Fountains of Wayne, even Blink and fallout boy probably wouldn't have been a thing without Dookie getting a major label release. Green Day primed the populace for the more traditional punk sound. Offspring was around, but they were more southern California sounding pop punk. They were damn near a different genre completely. They've always sorta been punk adjacent and didn't bring punk mainstream like greenday did even if they had success as a band. Kinda like how Metallica's success hasn't brought metal mainstream. Greenday managed to bring a _whole genre_ into the billboard top 40.
Edit 2: Thanks for coming to my Ted talk. Lol.

Why this song/band means so much to me:
I've had epilepsy since I was a kid (about 20 years now). Seizure drugs are notorious for having so many difficult side effects, such as depression, lethargy, anything to do with your normal brain function, but it comes down to dealing with the lesser of the evils. When I began taking these drugs, my entire persona changed. I stopped sports, became withdrawn and antisocial, stopped eating healthy. I was a zombie, soulless, much like how JK Rowling describes her depression through the dementors. But after some years, my doctor took me off the medicine to see if I'd outgrown the seizures. The first moment I felt a reawakening: it was in the car on the way to school. The radio was playing like always, but I never actually absorbed what I heard. Then I heard this baseline, it woke me. I felt so strange, I felt alive.
My seizures came back, and I had to go back on the medicine. But sometimes, I can still recapture that feeling, that awakening, when I put on Green Day. Love you guys, always.

Punk being played in a grungy way. Absolute gem!
More like influenced by Sex Pistols
true
***** Grungy in the sense, it starts out slow and then builds up in the chorus. Of course, the chord progression is that of punk.
Jay punk can absolutely be grungy. Nirvana. And if you don't consider Nirvana punk, you have no room to consider Green Day punk either. Though I hate the whole "Grunge" thing. It's just a label not a sound. Though if by grunge it is meant sludgy distortion, Eb tuning, and bi polar song structure, green day could definitely be considered similar.
More like the Ramones.

I prefer the bass in No One Knows slightly more, but this is definitely a close second.
You all said this song for quarantine, but this song is my whole life.
This song is what got me into green day in the first place and it will always have a special place in my heart!!
One of the best green day songs 🔥🔥🔥

Everyone is talking about how relatable this song is but I’m in quarantine and I live in Longview Washington, the town this song is named after 🤦🏻♂️
Me too, brother! Been here since 98! Too bad I wasn't here early enough to see them perform when they were just young guys traveling in a beat up van.
Lol I live in Kelso and a musician and basically living the life Billie is describing. It's depressing here lol. I guess it could be worse.
So nostalgic! I remember watching MTV waiting for them to play this and Basket Case! Dookie was a teenage boys anthem in the 90s!
Even though this is a very popular Green Day song, it's still one of my favorites by them.
1:03 just a normal day buttering your pan...
runs out of butter
*Ah shit, here we go again.*
The official Quarantine 2020 anthem
True. lol. But the song is more about voluntary apathy and laziness not enforced fascism like what we are dealing with with this hoax.

It feels so suprising when a song actually has lyrics that matches your lyrics

Happy 30th Anniversary, Dookie!!
Most relatable song I’ve ever heard
