God i miss the era of hands-off showrunning, having guest writers able to contribute little one-off stories resulted in some of the best episodes in the whole revival (Dalek, Midnight, Doctors Wife, The Girl Who Waited, etc)
Really hope RTD2 doesnt fall into the same lore-heavy serialized rabbit hole

I totally agree that the TARDIS team are a lot more fun out of character in interviews etc. In the programme itself, they just seem very awkward but polite, like they’re on actual guided tour with strangers. This is probably realistic, but doesn’t make for compelling lead characters.
I enjoyed the little games videos the regulars made during the pandemic. Jodie was a great ambassador for the show whilst she was the lead. I do miss her. Especially with this current shitshow.

I’m actually working my way through series 11 for the first time in a looooooong time right now.
My Hot Take on it is going to be that it *does* work much better than it’s given credit for, but that it’s let down by how abysmal Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos is as a finale.
Frankly I think if series 12 and Flux were a little more similar to series 11 in their approach, the era as a whole might be more well-remembered.
My take on Season 11 (and you can see what I thought at the time for yourself over at my channel, unless you're one of the 10 people who actually saw my reviews...) was pretty much this. I was impressed with "Demons" and "It Takes You Away" and I even had nice things to say about "Arachnids in the UK." Then "Ranskoor" showed up and I needed like six months to get my thoughts together about it. When I found out it was basically a first draft... yeah, that tracks. That's an episode with at least three potentially interesting seeds for a good story, and none of them really go anywhere in the finished episode.
Honestly my biggest problem is that it bored me. The characters weren’t consistent, the 13th doctor’s direction was pretty abysmal, the pacing was really bad, and the scripts felt like first drafts, etc, it just made me yawn when I watched it. Which is the reason I think Flux is the best 13 season, at least it’s fun bad and flat bad.
@@Unknown-qj9sm I used to share at least some of those takes, but I dunno, something about watching it with fresh eyes and a bit of distance from the internet discourse just makes the whole of series 11 click for me.
It reminds me of a Davison season: some great stories, some slow burns, some weirdness, and some turds. Season 19 reminds me of 11. Castrovalva > TWWFTE

Thanks guys for getting me to read some of the 13th Doctor EU range. Re-reead my old copy of the Good Doctor, it really is as good as you said. Also picked up copies of Old Friends and a Panini Comics collection called White Dragon with five stories in it. The story White Dragon might be the most fun I've had with 13's run, meeting Bruce Lee and having a martial arts contest for the planet. it's amazing
I love this line up to fix up 13s era!! this is a really fun kinda idea to do. I'd love to see your guys line up for like fixing 6s era! I feel like that would be a fun one. or hell line up what stories you think would work if 8 had his own series of episodes. it's a very fun sort of idea and I can't wait to see what you guys do next with this

It would have been interesting to have Grace and Graham as mature companions from the outset
I’m a little shocked they’ve never played off the trope of younger doctors with older companions. Makes for a funny dynamic that despite being young and eager the doctor is still much older than the more seasoned members of his companion team
Immensely appreciate your perspective and enthusiasm, this video is fantastic! Finding people who will discuss the 13th Doctor in good faith and will assess its flaws and strengths without over generalizing it to “the worst thing ever doctor who is ruined” or “perfect queer representation!!1!1!” is difficult, but you hit it perfectly. Definitely will be sharing this video to other people who appreciate series 11 but notice it’s missed opportunities. It’s obvious this effort comes out of love for the show.

Just starting video (having not known the channel, showed up in my home feed) and ... could be interesting. Jodie took over "favourite Doctor" position from Tennant during her run, even though the writing was pretty poor, so it'll be nice to imagine her with good writing to back her up.

I think the entire idea of "Dr. who can't handle too many companions" goes out the window when you consider Star Trek has been going with larger casts for a similar amount of time. Both are peers; sister shows even. both are long ongoing sci-fi TV series that tend to be about learning and understanding the world around you. In both trek and who violence is the bad outcome for lacking understanding and miscommunication, both are very procedural with monster/crisis of the week elements at its core, and both are fundamentally about exploration seeking out new life and a thirst for adventure.

The Titan Comics Thirteenth Doctor range can be read online or bought in paperback. I really recommend the first year and then jumping promptly off after the Blink 10th Doctor crossover.

After you recommending it in like every 13th doctor video you have made. Finally started listening to the good doctor audio book and you are right it is good so far. Only on chapter 9 but the dynamic of the fam is well realised and think with the added narration I am fully invested and immersed. I am really enjoying their dynamic and 13 feels more doctory which I feel at times was missing in her era. And it reminds me a little of the Ark so win win overall. (BTW if anyone has spotify premium you can listen to it for free)
I just re-watched all of Jodie's stuff, giving it a second chance after time. I still hated the first season, liked half the second, and loved the flux (mostly)
I’d definitely change up 13’s outfits a lot more, especially after Series 12.
I find it ironic that a lot of the things Chibnall tried to do with series 11 to make it new and fresh, RTD is essentially doing to series 14/season 1 for the exact same reasons.
-a slimmed down episode count to increase per-episode budgets
-primarily rely on new monsters and villains
-depart from a lot of the overarching lore and character arcs of previous eras
-cast a doctor that is breaking new ground and showing us sides to the character we haven't seen before
If series 11 had worked, and if it had quality writing to back it up, it should have served as the 'season 1' of a new era. I was incredibly excited for it before it was released, and it's failure was one of the biggest disappointments I've ever had with this franchise. It could have been phenomenal.

i;m with Josh Carr on Reslution!! Because I believe Chibnall's "loose" dalek trilogy of NYE speicals are really amazing, well written and fun. Also Matt Berry in DW needs to happen as one character. I don;t care if he;s a male incarnation of the Rani and goes by a different name. this is a great series idea and glad someone else loves the titin 13 comics. :3

I never thought about how much they wasted Yaz's nan as a character.
I thought Ryan and Yaz as an underachiever and overachiever respectively. So id lean into that during the beginning of the era.

Oddly Series 11 is my favourite 13th doctor season. Only things keeping it back for me is Aracnids and Finale. If the finale was better or a 2 parter. Just cut Aracnid. It'd be in my top 3.
Hard to explain why, I love the hopefulness of the season, So many great scenes in episodes such as Rosa, Demons of the Punjab, It Takes you away.

What if... Chibnall good?
Okay, I'm gonna give my own attempt at this rewrite to see what you think. I will say I'm trying to stick to the original template of the series but making it work. Starting with the Tardis team for Season 11, its going to be Doc, Graham & Ryan. I am going to bring Yaz in a later series but I personally prefer a trio for the teams. Four member team works but I just don't like them. I also like when the Doctor switches teams around, it feels more natural. So here's the arcs I'm planning for the team:
Doc 13 - I see her being a pretty basic template of the Doctor, Twelve's arc lead up to this point so she feels comfortable just being the Doctor... she will notice struggles with her changed gender which will lead to her becoming a quick-tempered Doctor
Graham - I see him as a old boy, traditional person. He see's a lot of things as black & white, good & bad. He has good intentions but also doesn't like massive changes. He only comes on board to look after Ryan & he wants to be a good grandad to the boy, since its also his last connection to Grace
Ryan - I see him as a wannabe influencer for the sake of being famous. Part of it is from his disability making him crave attention but also I want to give a slap in the face to influencer culture. He is very hot headed and tries to be rebellious just for the sake of it
Episode 01: The Women who Fell to Earth
So this episode will be basically the same... I don't have much to add or change, except Unit will assist in the hunt & will play a bigger role for something I want. I'm also setting up a running gag of Ryan trying to film his adventures & the Doc just sonics the recording away because its dangerous to have to much information out there. Yaz is introduced in this story but she isn't joining the team, wanting to progress down her career path
Episode 02: Interterrestial Race
This is basically the same as the ghost monument but the focus is on the danger of the world. Ryan tries to vlog his adventure but 13th tells him to pay attention. After she saves him (when he runs ahead without thinking) Graham tries to show his style of consisteny... although the Doc has to save him from a threat approaching them. Moral of the story is you need to move forward but not by jumping steps
Episode 03: Rosa
This is going to be a Graham centric story, he asks the Doc to visit Rosa Parks as she's one of Grace's heros & he wants Ryan to experience her legacy. It will be pretty similar but I'm changing the villain into the Master... basically, they wanted to get the Doctor's attention so they messed about to draw the Tardis in. Its too late to stop the ending so Graham still has to occupy a seat but the Master isn't malicious. This is a continuation of Missy's arc & they survived because Simm's Master, regretting the choice subconsiously set up a last minute save for Missy's regeneration. Moral of this story is the price for peace is eternal vidulence
Episode 04: On the Hunt + Episode 05: Unit's Strategist
Returning back to Sheffield, this will be a UNIT vs Sontaron two-parter. This will introduce a new side character (a Sontaron) whose called Sunny (13 names them). Basically, Sunny came hunting Tzim-Sha, whose already left the planet. It's basically going to be a classic third Doctor Story. During the story, Ryan tries to shut down Unit because he see's them as an authoritarian, using his vlog to show off their inner workings while Graham is trying to get him settle down. He has a 'they are the authority & should get on with their job' mentality. The two parter ends with the Doctor bringing the Sontaron leader into negotiations & its proven Tzim-Sha isn't present. Sunny joins Unit as a strategist but also to call back the Sontaron's if Tzim-Sha returns. Learn of a war between the Sontarons & Strenza
Episode 06: Trapped
This is gonna be the horror episode & its a single Weeping Angel trapping them on a spaceship, the Tardis has run off & the sonic is being used to maintain power on the ship... I want to simplify the angels back to make another Blink
Episode 07: Kerblam!
Probably my biggest overhaul of an actual episode. This will be another Ryan focused episode, with him reminded of the dead end job he got stuck in. Seeing Capatalism still in full force, he is determined to shut it down & the Doctor, more intrigued by the murder mystery to stop him. Graham goes through motions of being the system works into seeing how the workers are hurt by it. Turning him onto the shutting down factory. It continues on & they end up using the robots to blow up the factory, not quite the end of capatalism but the Doc promises to tell that story another time (a hint to Oxygen from S10). This will be the turning point of the Graham-Ryan relationship.
Episode 08: The Witchfinders
This will be pretty similar to the actual episode. I see the Doc thinking its linked to the wood-roaches from the episode Knock Knock but its not. This will be the gender of the Doctor being the breaking point, making her lose her temper for the first time & it'll scare both Ryan & Graham (which'll be a lead in for the finale).
Episode 09: Galactic Battle + Episode 10: War on Ranskoor Av Kolos
The final is a two-partner, like it should be. This will be an intergalactic battle between the Stenza & Sontarons. For reference, Stenza I'm basically making a serial killer race & professional hunters. I imagine the Stenza's being more like Ryan, a head strong person who runs straight in for what they believe (pushed to the extreme) while Sontaron's are like Graham, in being structured & organised. The Doctor, still in her rage mindset is trying to stop the war but not without colaterol damage
With the second part taking place on a planet, a massive outright war. Its hinted this is the same planet from Episode 2 but the Sontaron tactics is what turned it into the dangerous landscape we previously saw. It ends with Graham dying & Ryan deciding to leave because he's scared of 13th as of recently. He still wants to be an influencer but not to be famous but for something he believes in and something to make both his grand parents proud

Awe man. Series 12 rewrites. Soooo interesting. Nikola, Praxeus, Can You Hear Me?, and Haunting are BROADLY. SALVAGEABLE. I would honestly scrap the rest.

There's a lot of overlap, but there could be room for both. It'd be more about collating things I've said previously into 1 video.

I always find nitpicking random lines and scenes as bad criticism of a whole era. What doctor hasn't had tone deaf and emotionally illiterate moments

5:47 three is tinyyyyyy, what?? I wanna hear different voices, but I also want a recurrent vision. 5/6 out of 11, I'd say. Eps 1, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11.
I have no problem with co-writing credits, but what Chibnall script would I add back into S11? A section justifying Arachnids in the UK or Ghost Monument would be mad.
I would happily put Tsuranga back in here, but as somebody said- it was a last minute jump-on from Chris. I'd like Chibnall co-writing Ivanhoe/Mobox/A New Beginning/It Takes You Away in this hypothetical. Guide the alternate medium / new writers who aren't writing sensitive personal pieces onto the show and enforcing the character arcs.

Btw I watched that old video of how you’d write your own era of Doctor Who, and I genuinely believe RTD stole your ideas. I’m not joking or anything, I think that’s very much a possibility. Two Doctors at the same time? Check. Returning Classic companion as series regular (as opposed to someone who only shows up on one ep)? Check. First black Doctor? Check (although this part could genuinely be a coincidence) a psychedelic, crazy new vibe surrounding the show? Check. I also heard rumors about the return of the Valeyard in the next season after this one, and I honestly think it’s highly likely that the One Who Waits is Omega. Even the TARDIS console room concept art that showed up on your video is suspisciously similar to 14’s console room. I could be wrong here, and I’m obviously aware that even if that was the case you wouldn’t be able to sue BBC, Disney or anything like that, just wanted to tell you I think he’s blatantly using your ideas without putting your name on the credits lol
And just to be clear, this isn’t even a crazy theory, bc it’s been done before by showrunners of other shows, it’s happened before

Would this really have improved those episodes though? The stories still all play out the same. Having something for the audience to point at and go “ooo I know that thing!” doesn’t make the plot any stronger.

@@brewster_4 because of how much the shows lore and story arc changes with each era and what issues it decides to tackle it throws certain people off. It makes everyone have their own fav. Era and showrunner. The current angle just so happens to do with sexuality and something ELSE which can't be deciphered until new seasons finishes airing.
Nooooo Sam, nooooo. Davies barely went to the Fitzroy. That's a conspiracy theory made up by random people who hate him and his friends. (tbf, many of his friends _did_ go to the Fitzroy. But Davies didn't.) The RtD1 crowd, the Wilderness era bigwigs, and the Fitzroy lot are a Venn diagram with a reasonable amount of overlap, sure, but it's not a circle. These things aren't synonymous.

Ill be honest - and yeah,Im a bit unhinged, Jodie is the only modern Doctor I like 😮. Ecclestone was ok, but not enough of him. The two pretty boys - nah. And Crapaldi was - crap. With Jodie’s Doctor I would have happily jumped in the TARDIS with her. Shame she had all the useless companions. In an ideal world she should have just had Graeme.
Anyway, compared to the horror thats masquerading as Who now Id rather watch The Woman Who Fell To Earth, Rosa, Demons, Kerblam, It Takes You Away, The Witchfinders, Spyfall, Fugitive, Villa and half of Flux and Power. Thats not a bad run of stories.
I jumped ship after Power and it’s highly unlikely Ill go back.
