That’s an awesome project I might make for myself.

Yeah it's a fun little project. Definitely one that sells! Thanks for watching 😃

How deep did you go routing for the magnets?

    • @bromarbuildz-oy7ls

@@keenonmurphy4812 So I left 2mm of the face remaining. So thickness of veneer, less 2mm. This is based on the strength of my magnets and the properties of the timber. If you have stronger magnets, you will probably be able to leave more. I've made a few before and it holds up rather well. Hope this helps! 😃

Something I learned trying to duplicate another knife thingy, and after buying a cheap one from China, theirs was actually better with “fake” magnets vs the neo type. But somethings look better on camera, kinda like festool stuff. No hate to anyone but just know sometimes the cheaper is actually better

@@aaronblackford981 thats interesting. I actually experimented with normal magnets to see what the thickest piece of wood was to hold a knife, using as many normal cheap magnets as I could find. It didn't work. I also went to stores and tried placing a knife off the shelf through the plastic seal of a supposed knife holder, it was terrible. I mean maybe I'll do some more research as earth magnets or obviously way more expensive and if I could find an alternative, that would be way better! Thanks for the insight 😃

@ idk. Maybe I got a bunch on bad neo and your tests were crap. Idk. As said, I bought cheapest thing ish I was trying to do and figure out how to make what the customer wanted. The cheapest worked better. Scientifically, no clue. In my science head, it kinda makes sense as you need wider and deeper magnets but not to anything insane imo

Yeah that's strange. I'll probably keep my options open then, as these have always had a lot of interest, so any way I can make the product better I will. Thank you 👍

What magnets did you use for this project?

@@Dhaas73 excellent question! I used 5mm X 40mm rare earth magnets (Neodymium). I actually bought them from AliExpress. They're pretty good. Depends on where you're based? Here in NZ it's a nightmare trying to find competitive products.

No wonder you sold them all 😂 - $80 is very cheap considering all the wood and labour that went into making each one, plus all the magnets 25 x magnets per board. That’s around $30 for the magnets alone, 1 hour cheap labour per board @25 and $15 in materials, wood, hot glue, finish etc. you’d be lucky to have made $5-10 per board. No wonder people were hounding you for them 😮😂

Ha ha. Actually I got the wood for free. The hot glue is unbelievably cheap from where I get it. And the magnets are from Ali express. I paid 76 dollars for all the magnets for every board. But I agree with you. I based the price on the finish. I strive to perfect. Also it was an experiment. However the next batch I will only sell for 100 a piece. Maybe I'm mad 😂

@ if you run out of free wood… how much would it really cost you? Need to not short change yourself and other woodworkers. Just my 2 cents.

@Mr.Peabody961 i would need to sell them for the $120 mark for sure once I buy my own timber. I'll keep you updated. Appreciate the feedback 👌
