    My computer past was: Atari 2600, Atari 800XL, Atari 520ST and then the jump to a 286 and thus into the PC world. But I'm still excited when I think about these great devices.

    Great stuff! Dread, Old Towers and Metal Slug are technically impressive and beautiful, it's incredible that we can play them in our loved Atari ST. Looking back through this 2 last years, the pandemic situation it's being very prolific for the ST game scene, and it's alive.

    Good list, quite a few things I'd missed coming out. Guess you could also include the ports of Monkey Island 2 & Indiana Jones & The Fate Of Atlantis, which were "new" on the ST in the last couple of years.

    Dark Fortress may have been released widely in 2020-2021, but it was originally written in the mid-late 80's.

    Brilliant video and some of these I'm working on myself tbh... I need to quit my job to be quicker... Anyhow, doesn't it just please you to know the ST/STe world has such talent and commitment. Curse Of Rabenstein is a belter, I'm normally so rubbish with these type of adventures yet I did good with this so it must be really well design for a simpleton like me! lol. I skipped by Toggle as I've bought it and didn't wanna spoil my surprise! :) Toop looks great. Have you tried Yopaz IceStar? Arghh I need to play Zamboozal!!!
    This video I really enjoyed but it sure makes me realise how little spare time I have for my ST.... New years resolution: sleep less/work less and play more! :D

    Metal Slug STE is bad recorded. Its 70 colour on screen are only possible via combination of odd and even frames; in this recording there are only 25 fps, while the game needs a 50 fps recording system; easier way is to record from STEEM emulator with Vsync activated.
    Or use a camera to record the gameplay: ua-cam.com/video/gyRBcTnn-5M/v-deo.html

    Some amazing games, but it would be nice to see additional information - are those all STE only games? Do any of them require any additional hardware? I'm having a hard time believing a standard ST can put out Wolfenstein-like graphics like in the first game shown.

    Not sure how big the ST market is now, but I think to use anything less than an STe with its DMA chip is not pushing what can be done. Of course, that was the problem when the STe came out, but since it is what it is, programmers should be using the capabilities of the STe as a baseline, it's not as if they are rare or anything. Just my 2 cents

    • @blackterminal
      @blackterminal Рік тому +1

      That would make it not run on those with a original ST. Though I'm lucky enough to have both. Also it's their personal time to make this. I won't be telling them how to make it

    • @oldestgamer
      @oldestgamer Рік тому +1

      @@blackterminal True, it is their time and money to make their games, but the problem for the ST was that all the developers were shooting at the lowest base ST and almost never for the STe, which was a problem for Atari and caused them to lose massive share to Amiga when the STe could be a good bit more impressive in it's capabilities. Just reading all the old mags and you see complaining about not having the blitter, but when it finally shows up, no developers used that either. I some games written tight to GEM, the blitter makes a BIG difference for moving graphics!

    It's very cool to see a live scene, but let's be honest...Except few titles, most of them haven't used even half of ST potential. Memo, dices, Montezuma clone, etc. Don't get me wrong, it's still please the eye but it's also little bit disappointing. Cheers guys /I\ forever! ;)

      My goal was to show all the games made for the ST between 2020-2021, not only the good ones (except some textadventures which I skipped). I agree, that not all this games using the whole ST potential. But one reason for this is, that much of this games have been created in GFA Basic and maybe STOS. Also, a game can ofcourse still be fun to play, even if it has no great gfx or sfx. Btw. Memory Challenge and Bombwatch are my own creations. This are my first 2 Games I made for the ST and I wrote them in GFA. But you can be sure that the next games will look and sound better XD

    Just so people know, the Metal Slug port is far more impressive than it appears in this video. It uses dual-field colour techniques which requires 50fps video to see. Or in Steem emulator, turn on Vsync option to record video in lower fps. Here is what it really looks like, on a standard STE with 4mb of ram! m.ua-cam.com/video/gyRBcTnn-5M/v-deo.html

      @@svendaennart I think what he meant was that considering the capabilities and limitations of the Spectrum, a lot of the newer releases on it (the Castlevania game for example) look much better than some of the games shown in your video. No disrespect to the authors, but most of these games are pretty basic and could have come out in 1984 based on the looks / implementation technology. On the other hand you have a masterpiece like the Metal Slug port.

  • @RussMichaels

    Considering the ST is a 16bit system, I am rather surprised by the quality of these games... Almost all of the new C64 games games I have seen released over the last couple of years are considerably better in every way... game play, gfx and music, and that is an 8bit computer.

    • @svendaennart
      @svendaennart  2 роки тому +4

      Well, uhhh... I´m not 100% your opinion but I understand what you mean. True is, that there are much more new C64 Games than Atari ST Games, AND much of this games have indeed a Very good Quality (in relation to the 8bit possibilities). That is not really a miracle, because the C64 has been sold much more often + there is a Mini C64 and Maxi C64 now. Also, consider this: In order to create a C64 Game, you have to use Assembler or SEUK. There is almost no way to create a game in C64 Basic, except maybe for some very lame textadventures or dice/card games. Therefore, the people who create C64 games have to be very skilled and experienced. For the Atari St, you dont need Assembler Knowledge, because you can use GFA Basic, Omicron Basic, ST Basic, STOS and a lot other languages. In other words, everyone with a little bit programming knowledge can create games for the ST if he wants. However, when using Basic, you are very limited, so it is just not possible to create some AAA+ TopNotch Game with smoothscrolling and dozens of sprites and digisound in Basic XD. I have myself created 2 of the games in this video in GFA Basic btw... Ohh, and before I forget this... I have tested a lot of new C64 games and there has been also a lot of crap. But Because of the much higher number of games, I skipped this crappy games and was able to show only the nice ones :)

    • @RussMichaels
      @RussMichaels 2 роки тому +1

      @@svendaennart I owned all these computers back in the day... I also coded in 6502 Assembler and I have seen a large proportion of the c64 games released over the last few years, including the crappy ones.
