Ahhh, I'm so excited to hear you talk about this song after I suggested it, and what you said was really inspirational. I think a lot of people don't think they sound perfect because they sound like themselves, when they're trying to sound like someone else. They think they're doing it wrong because they don't sound exactly like the person on the album, and are trying so hard to be perfect that they forget to be interesting! Like, we've heard that person already, I want to hear how YOU do it.

Was lucky enough to see that cast a couple of weeks ago and he was as mesmerizing live, deep in character(the color of his voice was not what I was expecting but he transported me inmediately). Greetings from Cuba 😃

It's nice to see someone build this song with such variety. It gets pretty boring without it.

It's so nice to see your reacting to musical theater. It's music I grew up with, and I still love it.

Sam, loved this reaction--especially the part about "perfection." Per your request:
Life: be in the moment. If we've learned nothing else in the last couple of years is we can't predict (or control) the future.
Philosophy: just to echo what you were saying, the journey of improvement is not the same as being perfect. The journey holds so much value, and the destination, frankly, doesn't exist. In addition, Hegel, the philosopher, is super boring. Avoid reading him at all costs. ;-)
PS I think you are an amazing teacher. I watch your reactions because as a teacher (former higher ed math teacher and currently a higher ed entrepreneurship teacher) I'm drawn to your love of teaching. I know very little about voice, and I'm not much of a singer, but your reactions make me consider being braver about learning more. Keep being an awesome human!

I really enjoyed your observations! I saw the show live & fell in love with his voice -- so hearing you describe its highlights resonated with me. This actor recently released a solo album called "Along the Way" that's beautiful & dynamic if anyone is interested in a similar sound.
An aspect about theater that sucks is that your view of people's facial expressions or acting can be obscured if you're seated far away or to the side! But the filmed theater content (youtube, film adaptations, etc.) provides a way to make the story experience more intimate & highlights the talents of these professionals.

When I saw the show, I fell in love with his voice too! He makes NYC feel like the best place to be, which is how I feel about it too❤️ the emotions he puts into the song - like Sam said - are perfect and make you really connect with his character

The speed with which he sings is really awesome, most people can't control their air enough to use that technical and quick stacatto delivery. It's great, and the beginner singers should also read acting technique books to do what he is doing with the "seeing in the minds eye" imagination thing you are talking about.

It's so tremendous and so special that you are remarking on these subtleties that most people can't put into words but that mean so much - it's just so satisfying to listen to you. It's not only your insights and ability to spot the meaningful details but your generosity of spirit that if other critics did more of, the whole world would be a better place. You're also identifying the key issues of the art of performance.

I haven't watched your videos in a while (life gets busy, ya don't spend all day on UA-cam like you'd like to sometimes, lol). Anyway. Your last bit really... I love it. I was in choir for a *long* time so my idea of *perfect* is very different from what I use to ... I dunno, sing to the radio? I haven't sang in a choir in so long that trying to sing choral arrangements ... my voice sounds so *bad* to me. And likely my former director would have some words for me as well - as would my voice teacher. But it works for my everyday singing for fun, getting "into character" as much as I can while working my dayjob.
I do miss being able to sing the way I could 8 years ago though. I'll likely never reach that again. I have pipe dreams of joining the local community college's choir but I know I can't afford classes there and therefore can't sing with them so choral singing is likely not going to be a part of my life anymore. Which... considering it took the place of any sports and any other interests for 9 of my school years (and quite literally saved my life on a couple occasions by being the only thing I looked forward to)... is a lot to realize.
I hope you're doing well, Sam & I hope you get to see some live performances soon. I appreciate your videos. Love & Light ~ Squirrel. 💛

Sir! You have to hear the amazing devil. They're Joey Bateys band. He's the bard, Jaskier in the Witcher. They are breathtaking.
The female lead, Madeline has the most awe inspiring voice and performs some spectacular vocal gymnastics

I really liked what you said about perfection. For me, it is the emotion in music that makes it worth listening to, in most cases. I think you can't share big feelings in some technically perfect way. If I'm thinking about how perfect each note is while you are singing, for me you are doing it wrong.

This video hits kinda hard, feel like his message is going past "vocal teaching". "Your version of perfect is probably wrong," "you can't make everything perfect all the time," "is his technique perfect? Who gives a s- who cares?" This goes beyond vocal lessons, I mean, vocal teaching too, but also probably also literally anything we do, which is hard for perfectionist to except, even about themselves

I think it can help you in life when you find a purpose, or you give yourself one. The form in whitch this is doesn't matter, important is, that it matches you, fullfills you and let you grow to become the greater you. In terms of singing, it is nice to sing just the way you want to do and enjoy yourself. But it could also lift you when you search for perfection, knowing you will never reach it, and accepting it is fine just to search develop on the way.
For myself I think everyone should look up for a form of art that fits its charecter. Weather its singing, painting, playing an instrument, raising kids, cooking tea. Everything can be an art and a way to express ourselfs and to reflect ourselfs.
Thats my thougt about it, I don't know if its kind of understandable...

I think they have made a pretty impressive evolution since then, and I'd be so curious to hear your thoughts on it!! for example their Candlelight Sessions show this really well :))

I started "doing" karaoke 10 years ago at age 62. I had always sung in top notch choral groups. Singing solo is a huge switch. I sang this song. It is a bitch. The accompaniment doesn't help. I can sing this acapella very easily. Yes , he did a fabulous job. Also, I saw the original on Broadway in 1970 and have sung this song around the house for 52 years.

Is there a way to request a song for you to react to?
If there is a way then I would loved to recommend you an artist named Shawn James. He's a great singer with he's own uniqe vibes/style. The songs that I would request is "Brother" (Acoustic), if you want some great, clean singing or his cover of "Who did that to you" (Gaslight Sessions) for some nice growl. Choose which is better for you.
Love your reactions, keep the good work.
