A speedrunner’s delight In Valheim’s vast world, You shine ever so bright. Your humor’s unique, Your vibe truly rare- I lost the rhyme, but I don’t care! For the joy that you bring, Here’s a Merry Christmas we sing. May your runs stay flawless, your spirits stay high, And may 2025 let your dreams touch the sky!
I’m so glad you’re continuing this run for however long you do it (I hope you find a way to finish it, even if you die-which will NEVER happen-I believe!). 🤩 This was a fun episode - great swamp! The idea of building on that plains mound is kinda cool, but it might be better to build on top of a crypt near the two surtling spawners to keep them pumpin’. Having that mound to plant your plains crops so close is really nice though. A tree house is a FUN idea, but seems pretty ambitious. Seems to make the most sense to build near the witch and the two spawners - if you get raided, you can use her bubble if you get in trouble…my two cents. And upgrading gear if you have the mats seems like it’s a wise choice - definitely couldn’t hurt in VH. In my opinion, it makes sense to take longer in a run like this, like you have been - the speedrunner in you wants to go fast (you've mentioned the slow pace a few times), but I really think you do have to stay aware, smart, and calculated in this run. I've noticed it (keeping rested and fed, portals down all the time, slowing down to re-orient). Yeah, you're doing amazing and I'm looking forward to more. Also - just have to tag these amazing, rewarding moments: 😉 2:24:10 2:26:29 2:42:11 🐦🐦🐦
I'd have to second this thought... building in the swamp near the surtling spawners just makes the most sense to me. And if you're able to keep the Bog Witch Bubble close enough that you can go into it if you get overwhelmed during a raid, all the better (not sure how you feel about that kinda cheese, but even just dipping in and back out again can give you just enough breathing room to recover). Also, if you're able to build the main structure of your base up on top of a crypt or up in a tree, at least you shouldn't lose all your loot boxes in the event of a poorly timed troll raid, etc. That's really the worst part of any raid! lol If they smash your smelters and that kinda stuff, whatevs, but picking up all your loot boxes is just PAINFUL (like you said in another stream recently). No matter what, just excited to see what you come up with. Also, I'm pretty sure you're totally aware of this (plus you already have a meadows farm portal) but just a friendly reminder that you can also plant carrots/turnips/onions/etc in the plains as well, if you end up making that mound in the middle a full spawn-proof farm! ;)
Yolof yolives! This is the best Christmas gift ever, I'm so happy! Listening to your thoughts and reasoning is just as captivating as in the first few episodes, maybe even more! I’m loving the slow-ish but steady pace, you’re progressing thoughtfully and with care, making each step feel meaningful. It’s a real pleasure to see how deliberate and meticulous you are in your approach. That swamp you found is just too perfect to pass up, I’d absolutely build there! From experience, I can say that building a treehouse near a surtling spawner is absolutely amazing! A treehouse doesn’t have to be built AROUND a tree, it can also be BETWEEN trees! Mine was a rectangular house built on a stubby T-shaped stone platform supported by woodiron beams, with each end of the T anchored to one tree. I even used the surtling spawner near my house to hatch chickens, haha. Maybe I’ll post some pictures in the Discord to give Builder Thread some inspiration. 1:46:30 The old Karve box, filled with a bunch of Serpent meat, is still happily bobbing around in the water near your plains1 portal! 1:56:35 Like a glove! 1:57:05 Wait, what? Fire buff and resting buff while on a Karve? Is there a submerged surtling spawner involved? But there’s no swamp weather, so how is that possible? 3:17:43 They broke a cooking station! What a bunch of jerks!
YAY! :D (I'm freshly back on my PC and ) I *still* haven't thoroughly examined the swamp house pics but I definitely will before I build! Currently leaning toward rehashing my previous crypt-top builds but I'd love to switch something up or add some flair! Duuuuuude, that fire/resting buff hung for SO long! Kind of amazed I didn't notice! What's maybe strangest to me is that it went away for a minute after passing the bonfire but then returned! I think there's definitely some fire bug in the game but I'd only previously seen it in dungeons. submerged surtlings is great use of the brains but, upon review, I feel like the buff lingers too long and I'm not seeing the flamejet anywhere. Super weird!
@@ThreadMenace I loaded your map seed and checked the spot where you got the fire buff, nothing on my end. I even placed a bonfire in roughly the same spot, and still no buff. Also, no sign of a submerged surtling spawner. We’d probably hear the surtlings spawn and die if there was one, wouldn’t we? Looks like it's time to come up with a good name for this bug! How about 'the Ghostfire Glitch'?
As I'm watching, I think if it gets to a point you aren't having fun with no map, you change the settings and open the map and continue. I mean, isn't the point of the game to have fun? You tried it, it's not for you, make it fun again!! I personally think you have given it more than I could have. Just the very hard combat and raids changes the play enough for me.
A VERY Merry Christmas, indeed! Thanks, Thread! SO happy you're picking this back up (even if you never actually defeat all the bosses, it's still a very entertaining playthrough!)
Also (not sure if others have already said this, but...) the only things I can think of that will tell you that you're in ocean proper would be the weather changing (not telling you specifically it's ocean, but at least that you've changed biomes) and the type of fish. I think the puffer fish and grouper spawn in the ocean?? If you see them, I'm pretty sure they only spawn in the ocean...
Duuuuuuuude, FISH! I had sorta had the same thought about weather changing. It's good but not totally airtight but I never woulda thought about the fish in a million years! Great shout!
For a new base in swamp - I would build a raised bungaloo on the coast ( visible/accessible by ship and easy to find) on the spot you flattened towards end of stream ( 3 11 when you comment about the 2 convienent surtling traps). Raisied over water will help mitigate raid issues. set up plains farm on the center area and spawn suppress wont need but a few campfires in a space that small. I find tree houses are good for outposts but not so helpful for a primary production center. Nice to see you play l through and struggle with decisions. Now stop waffling and run this world ! See this through -no quitting ! We beleive in you.
They made the last 2 biomes difficult enough (for me at least) that hardcore would be too ridiculous. I can't even fathom any sort of no-map run no matter what the difficulty. XD I've been watching another youtuber do a "no-map," hardcore, no portal run and he got stuck on an island. Stuck, in that he lost his boat mats when he died while exploring. The island had no meadows or easy way to get leather scraps for the boats or axe to chop finewood. He did try for a while to get a troll to follow into the plains for some fine wood, but it, and he died too easily. He finally gave up, destroyed his bed, then died so he could respawn at the beginning. I put no-map in quotes because he has a mod that lets him draw a simple map if he interacts with a cartography table. That makes sense to me for no-map since that is sort of immersive.
I halfway expect to throw my hands up in the mistlands. The idea of "no-map" appeals to me but I started this vanilla so I think I'll finish it out that way. Maybe I'll take a "no-map" stab someday
This is so crazy. i didnt watch the other episodes. But how do you even find the bosses without the markers letting them mark on the map? Do you have to manually look for their spawns?
I just finished my no map no portal playthru. I quit earlier bc Ashlands was unbearable even on easy combat difficulty and 1.5x loot. I ended up turning portals on once I got molten cores and sailed back to put one at my base. I just could not see a scenario where I sailed in and out of the ashlands to upgrade my gear/weapons. Merry christmas and happy new year.
@@ThreadMenace I agree - I think no portals until heading to ashlands would be forthright challenge - and then only allow 1 set to get back to base, but ok to drop portal at base before you head down. Sailing through those spikes once is bad enough. I mean why else would devs finally give us in game metal portals.
you should install the mod that vaguely points your screen in the direction of the boss altar when doing mapless, wandering aimlessly is just annoying when searching for bosses in runs like these
In vanilla no map vegvesirs point the camera precisely at the boss altar already. Nothing vague about it. If you're not talking about vegvesirs I'm not what you're talking about, and would request that you please elaborate. And if you're annoyed when you're watching something on UA-cam I have a great suggestion! Let me know if you need it!
