This band was SOOO ahead of their time. This shit came out on 1994. That’s incredible to think that. The best “emo” band of that era. Next to Mineral.

Oh god this song gives me the most beautiful, painful, nostalgic feels. Used to listen to the entire Diary album on my 1st generation iPod, driving down the highway in my vw beetle- going through a lot of change and hard shit at that specific time in my life. Hearing this almost hurts..but in a good way if that makes sense

I used to listen to this album when I was in my early 20s and think about a girl from high school i spent many a night probably the coolest girl I've ever met she got me into all the music i love takes me right back to that place 25 years later

This was the song that gave me a whole new outlook on the emo genre and music itself. Today, there's a massive stigma telling someone one of your favourite music genres is "emo" because they'll immediately associate it with the fad of 'emo hair/clothes/makeup' and the Screamo/alt metal heard today. But this song truly captures the genre; if it was condensed in to one song, it'd be this, that's how important this song and their album Diary is. It's a shame people don't appreciate the emo genre for what it actually is, bands like Sunny Day, American Football, Lifetime have influenced several bands over the years and it's sad how they don't get the recognition they deserve.

Great feedback. I'm actually a drummer in an emo band. I hate when I tell people that and they associate it with looking like I'm a walking billboard for hot topic. Sunny day, American football, both awesome emo bands. Idk if you know who empire, empire (I was a lonely estate), foxing, snowing, mineral, prawn, or dikembe are, but they're all fantastic emo bands.
The way I described emo is exactly what it is. What I described is known as the emo revival. The original emo bands who set the stage for it are sunny day, mineral, and rite of spring. The emo revival is spearheaded by empire empire. Other bands that fall into it would be prawn, a great big pile of leaves, the world is a beautiful place and I'm no longer afraid to die, elvis depressly, snowing, algernon cadwallader, and foxing among others. It can often be identified by twinkly guitar riffs and somewhat high pitch borderline whiny vocals with intricate but not so flashy rhythm sections.

I remember there was a SDRE sticker in the locker i was assigned when i got to high school and i made a note to check em out. 20 years later i finally have: better late than never. There were just too many great bands around in the 90s to be explore everything.

Freshman year I had this and Hum glaring out the walkman on a costant loop. Such nostalgia hearing this...
In the late 90's I would sit in my car in the kroger parking lot after work with a girl I loved very much and we would just sit for hours and listen to music, stare at the stars and hold hands and this is one of the songs I heard while sitting there with her so every time I hear it it brings back one of the fondest memories of my life. 2 other songs that bring back the memory of her and those nights are: love spit love - am i wrong, the nixons - sister. Out of all the songs we heard while sitting there these 3 seem to take me right back inside that car with her.

I couldn't agree more, the music business is a funny thing. At the time when they first started playing I was living in Seattle and they were always my favorite then - and still are on my mind a lot. I've stopped trying to figure it out and just enjoy and know they meant a lot to me.

Man, I can’t even tell you how many parties I would go to and you would be hammered literally could not move in the back of your chair and as you’re sitting there, euphoric. Then this song would come on and just make everything perfect and even if you could, you would move an inch. I absolutely love sunny day real estate. will roc Do yourself a favor and checkout bands like Citizen, Basement and Superheaven (They used to be called Daylight so it may be easier on here at least to put Daylight in.) Really go through Run For Cover Records because they have a lot of cool bands. Theses three are some of the more popular ones though.

Actually, emo music (yeah like REAL emo music) is still bountiful today with bands like Modern Baseball and Brand New (although they are probably ending soon tho)

Nowadays, emo isn’t even emo anymore. It’s just a bunch of edgy people who whine about things.
Start one. A band, I mean. No one is stopping you. Make the music you'd want to hear. Instruments aren't hard if you're willing to practice every day until your fingers blister and bleed. It's more fun and less intense than it sounds.
I only heard them today and spent the whole day listening with headphones until my phone ran out, it's unforgettable.from Russia with love.
Some of the most devastatingly beautiful music ever released. I purchased Diary at Every Day Music in Portland, OR in the late 90’s. After I left EDM that night I played the CD in my car as I drove I-5 North back into Washington. The achingly powerful music coupled with Enigk’s voice got me misty eyed almost immediately. Other than Mineral’s The Power of Failing-particularly the song Parking Lot-I’ve never experienced an uncontrollable response when listening to music like I did that night.
Goddamn that must’ve been powerful. Wish I couldve experienced the PNW in the 90’s. It’s definitely a different place now

The swing scene is literally how fast I was going and I fell asleep for real on the rocking horse.

They must have recorded with a Microphone stuck right on the hi hats, listen to how crisp and gainy they sound, pretty sick
Phantom mics. They most likely recorded the drums on their own like they do with vocals. Phantom mics are so strong they can hear a moth fart.

the entire kit sounds amazing. snare is powerful but not overbearing with the right amount of sustain. kick has good attack and low end. cymbals are just washy enough but you can hear the pings of his ride during the verses. masterfully recorded drums - wish i could say the same for the guitars.

All you people saying this is terrible. First off, the sheer influence this record and band had on music is incredible. Bands like them, The Promise Ring, Saves The Day. They had such a huge influence on...shit. Plain shit. All those shitty post emocore bands that should be humiliated with what they did. SDRE is more grunge than emo, not by too much, but the comments here are pretty ridiculous.
Let's not forget that Damien Jurado (Cloudy Shoes, Sheets, etc.) was brought to the attention of Sub Pop Records by Sunny Day Real Estate singer Jeremy Enigk.

Not really familiar with this band, but I was at a Fall of Troy concert last night and they played a cover of this song. Thomas Erak said that without SDRE, there would be no Fall of Troy.

I've been listening to this band alot, especially how it feels to be something on, and WOW. This was genuine music straight from the heart. Amazing instrumental talent and lyrics that make me stop and reflect what they mean and how they just... feel. Love these guys. I wish everyone the best.
