Can't believe there are less than 500 views at this moment. I have followed Danny Meyer for around two years, an amazing career and books! Shane, excellent interview. I'll be interviewing +10 people for an internship program. Definitely, this conversation helped me a lot!!! Thanks for all your great work Shane. You are a jewel discovered within the pandemic 🙌🙌🙌

Another total slam dunk. Unbelievably dense. Needs repeat listening - for me anyway.

At 21:00, I paused the video as I knew I needed to take notes and be way more attentive for rest of the episode.

6:50 Culture changes all the time, and you've got to keep it healthy. Feed it like a soil.
    10:00 Everybody works in hospitality
10:40 When your community sees you doing good for the community, they root for your success. You see it in religions, fraternities, sports teams, families, businesses. The language 1) clarifies what we intend to do, and 2) creates a sense of belonging (tribe). E.G. summer camp for kids.
13:55 Culture is a language. A common language drives a culture forward.
15:55 Culture is like a shark - it's constantly moving (and changing) or it dies. The one thing that must not change is your value system. Your values is your compass.
16:39 Tell people and how to behave. Hire people who want to work at this place where people behave this way, and has these kinds of values.
18:00 Ray Croc McD's didn't spend a lot of time thinking about how to scale a feeling, he was very involved with how to scale technical systems.
18:25 Not only does he want the food to feel consistently good, but even more importantly he wants it to feel amazing - the human experience / exchange - that's the culture.
18:38 As we grow, it becomes more and more about, "how do we use our growth to advance our culture, as opposed to worrying that our growth is going to prevent us from maintaining our culture."
19:00 Every time someone gets a promotion, the rest of the org is watching very carefully. Every time they get it wrong, it sets them back manyfold.
20:48 HQ = hospitality quotient. The degree to which you are happier yourself when you make someone else feel better. It has everything to do with _what are your motivations behind the amazing technical skill you have._
21:14 "Kind eyes," you use your eyes your entire life to express emotion. Shows that you may not have been smiling for a good deal of your life - you may worry a lot, may worry a lot. "Kind optimism." Over an above being a great cook, you're optimistic and hope that your actions can make people feel better and make the world better. Skeptics tend not to thrive in the world of hospitality.
39:50 Japanese excel at service, while Americans excel at hospitality. Japanese are great at regimentation and systematization. The reason why JP are taken by jazz, which is uniquely American, is because of improvisation - which USA is much better at than JP. Improvising means customizing the experience for each guest. USA could learn systems and consistency from JP.
45:10 Fine Casual - a fine dining version of a fast food restaurant (Shake Shack).
