- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Well before words existed, sounds were giving away every thought and feeling we had. Have we lost our ability to spot them?

This guy was my vocal coach for the better part of six months and he revolutionised my relationship to singing and speech forever. A sheer typhoon of I.Q. and knowledge. A true master in his field, and a friendly and accessible human being.
Ironically, the way he talks (breathing hard, deepening his voice) totally shows his lack of real authority and honesty.

So. I watched this, was intrigued, looked for more videos on the subject. He doesn’t have any other videos on this subject. He seems to only be a vocal coach. Came back, read all of your comments, decided to watch this entire video one more time on 0.5 speed to really hear the depth of the different sounds he makes and to better be able to see the micro-expressions his face and body make while he’s talking. Here’s what I came up with:
He’s nervous- he barely smiles, he pushes his lips together before and after he speaks, his eyes are locked in a permanent stare down, aggressively hiding fear. his hands are in front of him and touching each other when he isn’t making gestures. He doesn’t smile when he’s done.
He isn’t actually confident in what he’s saying some of the time: his eyebrows raise up when he’s speaking confidently- showing his eyes to the crowd and revealing his fear in speaking to the crowd- that’s him when he’s speaking from an honest “him” place. He doesn’t seem pleased with the speech he has prepared. He was thrown off guard by the person laughing and shrugs a “wtf” gesture- which is why the audience erupts in laughter. He doesn’t seem confident or thrilled that his talk includes a reference about killing ones spouse- you can see the anxiety leave his body when he finishes that joke. He smiles during it, he thinks it’s funny, but he then looks away from the crowd, exhales, and covers his mouth- not happy that his Ted talk mentions spousal homicide.
He knows he isn’t giving these intelligent people a proper talk with good information- almost like he threw this together as best he could to make it work. As if he doesn’t think he really deserves to be up there informing these people. He might not have felt prepared, he might just be extra nervous, he might be wishing he had more to actually give the crowd.
It’s a staged monologue: every ted talk is. He’s aware that his topic is very meta, so he’s carefully controlling the tone of his voice and the cadence of his speech- like he’s speaking from remembered training for public speaking and not from his gut. Because he knows very well that the more information he gives about voice, the more they’ll hear it in his. He knows what he’s talking about, he also knows that he doesn’t know as much about it as he would like to explain. His body language is kindof deadened- he’s trying to hide his anxiety and come off confident and knowledgeable and he can tell when he forgets to posture properly. His face says fear, his body says “don’t hurt me” and his tone says “listen to me.” His public speaking persona doesn’t like public speaking in front of that audience.
It might not be information he learned- he may have been told this information by someone who did study it, and took it upon himself to act as the spokesperson for it, realizing he’s in over his head around these intellectuals vs. the “singers” he’s used to being so confident around.
The negotiation he mentions was probably a record deal of some kind, meaning a haggling more than negotiation.
He shows anger when talking about the man who covered up killing his wife, but he shuts his mouth very tight before starting that story. He didn’t actually participate in that negotiation, he watched it on a video, and it made him angry towards that man. Which is why he says “don’t kill your wife” two times. He does not want to be advocating for that kind of harm, he does not support it. He’s afraid to even joke about it.
Overall. He seems to be trying his best to give the best talk he can give. He doesn’t love what his final product is, he’s not confident in front of that crowd, he doesn’t like who he’s pretending to be as an orator. He believes in what he’s saying, he doesn’t believe these people will care about how he’s saying it. He doesn’t want people to think he likes joking about dead wives.

scrooblethump I’m guilty of exactly the same thing hahaha sometimes it’s nice to vent a little of life’s frustrations out. The key is balance, as long as some of your comments are positive, it’s okay to be harsh and negative a little haha, sometimes people are asking for it :P
I coached debate for a Korean after school academy some years ago, and in order to eliminate filler sounds from the oratorical diction of my students, I handed out two concierge service bells to be rung at each utterance of “um...” “errr....” “uuuuh...” during in class presentations & competitions. It was pure carnage at first, but the rate of self correction was remarkable under this form of concentrated scrutiny. We went from a room full of well behaved but whisper choked kids, to a team of Glenn-Gary Lincoln-Douglas commandos who swept the competition at CSUN.

I actually have a disability and one of the symptoms is misuse of verbal cues. Because of this I have to tell people when I'm done telling a story because I don't sound like I'm done talkong when I am.

It's weird that what he's trying to teach us can literally be used against him.. his stance, mannerisms, voice, all seem trained and fake.. he looks and sounds like he's pretending to not be stressed, rather than defeat the real reason he's stressed and exude genuine confidence. Something is so off about this guy

I think he's stressed about being in front of so many people, crikey wouldn't you be? Even if you speak to a crowd every day, doing a TED would be something different.
As others have stated, it may just be him being nervous about doing a Ted talk. There's a large audience there, and you know that thousands or even millions may end up watching a recording of yourself later.

He's stressed, because he knows what he is doing is a form of pseudo-science that only has a small foundation in truth and reality, and for the most part is just a parlor trick that kind of works sometimes.

It just seems to me he's nervous... This may one of the first times he's speaking in such a large crowd. Wouldn't judge to harshly as i don't know how i'd do in this situation.
Obviously he has experience with speaking in front of crowds. He just explained how to see through the misperception he's giving off himself. He is not nervous.( Not about the speech he is giving) Either he understands this concept just enough to explain it but not utilize it or simply he just did a few bumps before hand.

This guy was demonstrating the things as he talked about them. It's scary to view the ignorance or lack of perceptual intelligence in most of the comments below. His talk was not merely words, but also the real time demonstration of the subject of his speech. If you didn't ask yourself why you felt uncomfortable, and concluding that your discomfort means someone is nefarious in some way, you didn't get the genius of this man's presentation. I guess good information is only for those looking for it. As a teacher of mine told me many times, you cannot expect much when you cast pearls before swine. Those of you who didn't get it are the perfect example of a populace that is conditioned to fear and mistrust any feeling they deem uncomfortable. The presenter did all of that with prior planning and intention.
@orthopraxis Not genius. Not intentional. In the end, after more study of this vid than planned, he did absolutely and perfectly make his points, but he'd have been far smoother, done a Bill or Barack, if he'd been able.

The irony of his lecturing us on trust while trying Soooooo hard to control his breath, his timbre, our attention... he undermines himself IMMEDIATELY, which is why the audience laughs at the wrong time(s). They can’t take him seriously as he implies deep understanding of sincerity while utterly failing to project it.
This... THIS is the reason why the phrase "Know how to tell if a politician is lying? If their mouth is open and sounds are coming out; they're lying."

How can you get a baseline if the only thing you hear is a testimony? I am weary of these vocal cue and microexpression people that say they can tell if someone is lying. They cannot. They can -sometimes- feel stress, feel out some base emotions. BUT that´s something we can all do. Most of the things they catalogue are completely obvious to anyone with half a brain and the fact that they feel the need to catalogue them does not speak to their social prowess.
I wonder where this guy is in the Amway chain of command.

I don't see proper skepticism and criticism here. I see simple trolling and judgement of his confidence. Basically these are attacks on his very sense of self-worth.

Ok, what about people with aspergers? We are often aware that our facial and vocal cues are subdued or absent, making people feel uncomfortable, so we over compensate by trying to show emotion. We know this isnt natural, so we fear that the person will think its fake. Our vocal chords dryout and people think we are lying. Many people with aspergers are truthful to a point where they are almost incspable of violating facts by lying, yet are called liars or manipulstors simply since our facial and vocal cues aren't natural. The things this man is saying could very easily worsen the problem.
i don't try to control my body language or voice. i'm just aware of what i do, and what my needs are. it's all i need to know in order to analyze others.
when they presume upon me and tell me what they think of me, if they're right i know they're talking about themselves. if they're wrong i know they're talking about themselves, and if they say nothing, then they know themselves.

Wow, I never contemplated such things. In my culture that is Maori, a whaikorero- speech- long length by an elder or chief does this throat clearing, all of them do it, silence is bliss, even for 10 seconds- it feels like forever- respectfully we wait, because then next ten minutes is going to be an adventure of precise oral history of our peoples journey, allergies or not the men just copycat each other, Very interesting Mr Pedersen, Thank you I appreciate listening to you.
The big difference is the men may be coughing to mimic the elders and make them feel more comfortable by not causing their "weakness" to be highlighted. The "false cues" here aren't serving to cover possible deceit (unless the elder that starts it all is just faking it lol)

If I wasn't listening to the actual words spoken, but just look at the tone and body language of this man I would say he's really mad at something and finally throwing up his frustrations. That little thing he does with his hands around 13:50 doesn't look too confident either. I hope this helps some people, but it looks really weird to me.

I feel exactyly the same - this guy would scare me - he looks like tv's bad man! I didnt even listen to the whole thing because I dont want to take this nonsense into my head! Just the beginning re allergies - loads of people have dry coughs from gerd which is gut related but NOT stress related but good/bad bacteria or stomach acid related. That was enough to put me off.
