Make electric water heater hotter

If you feel that your hot water in the shower is not hot enough, you can make it hotter. Electric water heaters have two thermostats where you can adjust the temperature to turn it up. In this video, I’ll show you how to change the electric water heater temperature.

You have like a 20gallon water heater. I normally take a 12 minute shower, but I have a 50 gallon gas water heater. When I was younger and working, I’m retired, I use to take a 7 minute shower. I was in the water business throughout my life, so this was important to me. Normally your body likes temperatures above your body temperature (98.6), so you are normally taking a shower about 102. If your shower head is 2 GPM, somewhere about 10 gallons of water you would run out of hot water. So about a 5 minute shower, you would start to get cooler water. I could be off maybe 40%, so maybe a 7-8 minute shower may still be ok. A woman always takes more time, longer hair, etc. and they take a longer shower. I hope this makes sense. What you’re doing adjusting the thermostat works. If you’re not using all the hot water, the top element is the one working all the time. The bottom element only turns on when the hotter water is depleted, and the cycle starts over (hot water goes to the top of the tank and exits). In the cold water pipe there is a tube which allows the cold water to enter the tank 2/3 of the way down, not to mix with the hot water on top. I hope I’ve helped, thanks. Jim

Keep in mind that if you have hot water at the beginning, but it runs out quickly, that's a different unrelated problem.

No, you just probably need to replace the bottom heating element.
