- Simple DIY how to: Remove, clean, and replace the throttle body on a Ford Duratec HE or Mazda LF engine.
Throttle bodies get dirty over time along with the rest of the insides of an intake manifold, and it's good practice to service them by just cleaning from time to time. Dirty or clogged throttle bodies can lead to rough idle and engine tune problems. A good schedule would be the same as your air filter replacement interval.

Nb.: Later Duratec HE's use a drive-by-wire throttle body which effectively incorporate the IACV into the electronic throttle body - this would be a different process.
You will need:
- 8 mm socket and 3/8" or 1/4" socket wrench with short extension bar
- Throttle body cleaner or similar plastic-safe solvent for cleaning (do not use "carb cleaner")
- Rag(s)
- Torx driver to remove and reinstall throttle position sensor
- Flashlight.

If you have the later version with metal made throttle body you can use the fireplace glass cleaner - it does the job just great.

The socket extender sitting on the battery between the positive terminal and the metal battery clamp. Second-hand anxiety my friend.
Relax. The clamp bracket isn't grounded. Unless the socket handle on the other side connects to the negative :)

Mondeo MK3 2.0L : Delay of few seconds after releasing throttle until rpm goes down. I did the IAC and Throttle cleaning, checked the IAC valve off line for good operation - still the problem exist…

Do you mean the car still pulls after releasing accelerator? It holds rpm up when rev'ed in neutral? You will need to re-check the throttle body, check the cable is not sticking (take pipe off and watch it all while helper actions pedal). Does it idle ok - no vacuum leaks? If it's not the throttle then you will need to scan it, look at air/fuel, get more clues.
Thanks for the quick response...! It's an automatic gear vehicle; in neutral position, pressing the accelerator and then release - rpm stays high (3000 rpm) for few seconds before going down to idle (~1000rpm). It happens also by moving the throttle directly by hand, so it's not the cable I guess. Also in driving when I stop the car - rpm goes down to ~1500 and delayed for few seconds before idling to 1000 rpm.
Does the throttle sensor has something to do with this? I don't know how to check vacuum leak...Thanks. @@CraigsDIY
Shouldn't you disconnect the battery so that ECU will learn the new (clean throttle body) settings?
Mine wasn't dirty enough to bother, only if it's making a difference to its positioning would that be useful.
At 1:39 my 2006 Focus (USA) has another cable attached to that other stud....?

I'm extraordinary lazy and uninterested on working on my car. In that line of though, do you guys think it will be a good strategy to just remove the vacuum hose, and plug it up with something and not mess with the throttle body at all?

I have found only carb cleaner spray. Not what you have.
Contact cleaner probably won't remove heavy build-up. Carb cleaner ok but check it doesn't instruct to avoid plastic.
I have same car version, the fuel consumption is around 15 liters/ 100km. how to make it less? Mine is 18 years old.
that about 2x what it should be, even taking into account age and all that fun stuff it should not be anywhere near that high, i got an 03 with same engine, can do 600-700 on a full tank, lower if ac is on or going up/down hills all day. only thing i can think of with my very limited experience is to maybe see what the car thinks the temperature is and make sure the ac is off off, not just flicked off and maybe see what happens if the injectors get cleaned? not sure if the last 1 would do anything. or for all i know it could be a bad sensor telling the injectors to fire way too much

My 2004 ford focus zx3 with a 2.0 liter engine isnt running right.it will die while driving .ive replaced the fuel pressure sensor .the battery is perfect and the alternator is fine. I need help .i am once again on the side of the roadand it is about 200 degrees out here.
Engine can die for many reasons. Air, fuel, ignition, timing. You'll need more info.
Classic signs of this problem is that you have a dead spot on your throttle
What is the hose that joins the intake pipe at the airbox at0:35 from the top of the engine? Some sort of breather hose? Completely split on my 05 focus and can't seem to identify its proper name
Yes breather hose for the PCV system, it's just to take filtered air, the split won't affect performance but means unfiltered air is being allowed. It might have the Ford part # printed on it if you look, otherwise find it in a parts catalog, or any hose of the right size could be made to suit.
Craig, nothing to do with this video, but on the front panel where the yellow air con sticker is, to the left, it looks like there was another sticker, what was that sticker? As mine is also missing.

My ford mondeo engine has rpm too high when i start the engine. It is running wild, no more low speed. Any suggestion or help.
Replace the PCV valve and a vacuum hose.
Craig, I have currently have an issue with a 2005 1.8 hd ..car has gas fitted and its been checked by ford and they cant find the issue !! car is in Thailand, on start, when cold the idle drops from 1000 to 800 and jumps up and down , then settles at 1.100, I am fairly sure this is not correct and it has a fault, any ideas ??
Idle issues tricky, high idle could be stuck thermostat, varying idle settling high could be vacuum leak, problematic EGR, faulty MAP sensor, faulty TPS... you need to pull codes, examine fuel trims, test the sensors you can, to try to get some pointers. But honestly if your Ford shop are competent it's hard to help better remotely.

Hi, I have a FORD MONDEO TDCi Auto(DCT) MB, MC 2010, 4 Door Wagon DIESEL 2.0 litre, D4204T7 I4 16v DOHC Turbo CRD {120KW} and did 600km this week-end. 4 times during the way, the "engine malfunction" appeared and went into limp mode. Problem temporarily solved by turning off and on the car but it keeps reappearing.
I got the error code P2125-00 whioch is the "throttle / pedal position sensor / switch E circuit" error. Do you think I need to check and clean my sensor as you did in the video ? thanks
You can try. If you're getting an error tho it's probably an electronic problem, either with the circuit or the sensor itself faulty.

Is ok to use mass air flow cleaner on throttle body I cant find a cleaner other that mass air flow that won't hurt the plastic ... Help
I just used brake clean. MAF cleaner will work but just not very effectively. You can also buy specific throttle body cleaner.

Craig i havent removed it yet but managed to unplug the TPS from connector and found that the TPS is the cause for my idle issues..
can i drive with TPS unplugged????
only until a replacement arrives and also do I need to remove the whole throttle body to replace it
I don't know how well the engine will run with no TPS. It may run okay just from the TMAP if you are gentle with the accelerator - or it may stall all the time.
Much easier to remove the throttle body, as the TPS screws are tucked away awkwardly in situ. But you can try.

Difficult to access throttle body bolts with air intake in place, as you can see in video. Not hard to take off hose.
