I was salmon fishing today in my paddle kayak. Trolling wiggle warts was my best option for speed and depth in a small kayak. Really liked this video. Great job.
I had a bunch of originals since I’ve fished them since the ‘80s. When I started running out I bought some new ones and Randy is right. The paint job is not as durable but they catch fish just as well.
Cool tip. Sharpening the bill is interesting. Never heard that. Going to give that a try. Thanks Randy for always giving us your tried and true secrets! Love your channel.
Randy I like how you are not OCD in painting your baits with some red polish , $6 wiggle watt or $25 110 Mbass ...they get the earl shibes and go fishing !!!!
I've been watching your videos Randy now for some time. I appreciate the honesty you share in these videos, and the information is great. I feel alot of pros dont want to share their details about how they fish and what they fish, it's always vague when they talk!
There are some heavy duty snaps that will not bend out, I use both snaps and split rings. I have found that using a snap I lose less crankbait fish. A snap does take some leverage away from a fish. I'm still experimenting with it. The one bait I absolutely recommend a snap is a lipless, alot of lipless crankbaits roll over on their side when they are burned, depends on the brand, the snap prevents it from rolling over. But ultimately it's all in what gives anglers confidence
Good tip on replacing the snap to a split ring. Most all Crankbaits come stock with split rings that are way to thick and big at the hook hangers……over 40 years of angling I have found the Fine split rings ( Barlow’s)work much better at the hook hangers giving your hooks freedom of movement..also much easier to work with changing out hooks….Fingernail Polish works ok to modify baits if you are in a hurry….problems can occur with nail polished baits reacting in a negative way with other baits in your box. You can get water based red paint at a hobby store and some small paint brushes and detail the eyes , etc…on your baits much neater..then use a product called Seal Coat ( Barlow’s) to dab a clear coat over painted modifications . If you do use nail polish for a quick on the water color change , you can come back later and apply the Seal Coat clear over the polish . Rob
LOL, Daddy! Better take care of those girls. My preference is in the Mustad triple grips, tried them out after losing too many fish and it seems I get more all the way into the boat. I'm with you on the spring snap, but I like the Norman speed clip, it's basically a O ring and a ton stronger than the snap. Easy to change out hard baits. I clip it straight to lure wire and not the o-ring on the lure and haven't seen a performance issue.
Good tip I haven't heard of before. I'll try it. That's the same one I've caught 3 kinds of fish with. Bass, crappie and a blue channel catfish. I use metal flake nail polish for my crankbaits. It reflects the sunlight. Like everyone else, I occasionally find some lost lures. Clean em up, paint em up then replace the split rings and hooks.
Yep… the originals at least were magical. The original, pre-Rapala warts had a flaw in the mold and the halves weren’t perfectly symmetrical. They offset just a tiny bit that caused them to have an irregular hunting action. You can actually tell just by looking at the older ones. When Rapala acquired storm, they reworked all the molds focusing on those mechanical aspects as you say. They all have the exact same wiggle and run true out of the package now, but the magic isn’t the same. That’s why the original ones are selling for a fortune on eBay now. That cooky darting back and forth side to side action just caught fish. The new ones look like the originals but don’t run like them. Some other companies copies like the Spro rock crawler are actually better now IMO because they have the same basic shape and action but the finishes are better and more realistic. I treat my old originals like they are my kids or something now too. lol
You are much better at changing out hooks than I am. There's always blood coming from my fingers and I usually drop everything at least once. Take care and thanks for your advice.
@@Mags120fish1 Hey thanks for the reply about the pliers. I have a pair also and they are great but I'm just clumsy I guess. Take care and have fun fishing.
First time commenting but have been watching your videos for awhile and I have to say I really appreciate all of them and your insight from all the experience you have. I certainly do appreciate what you're doing. Thank you very much!
people are paying attention. After I watched this video which was 2 days after posted I went to TW and opened up wiggle wart. they have 36 colors and the only one sold out to be restocked is the one you showed on the video LOL!
If you had some Xuron split ring pliers instead of using regular needle nose pliers you could change those split rings more efficiently. Right tool for the job.
Wanna catch perch on a tough bite? Put a very small treble on the back of a perch pattern wart or a big-o. Leave the front hook full size. You can scrape rocks for smallies, and at the same time, big perch will make territorial strikes t the tail of your bait. If your tail hook is sharp and small, you can catch a bunch of perch in between your smallmouth.
I don't know about the newer Warts, but with the Pre-raps the clear bill models have a much softer rattle to them, where as the painted bill models have a louder and higher pitch sound. Different plastic used. Pre-Rapala says "Wiggle Wart" under bill or side and newer say 'Storm". Pre-Rap also have an ugly seam down back and belly, where as the newer are smooth.
The rattles go side to side so hitting on the side works best. You can smack it pretty good without harm to bait or paint. ua-cam.com/video/q9BA9XeH1A0/v-deo.html&ab_channel=ZZ430T56
@@randyblaukatintuitive Please explain when you do this video on tuning whether you are leaning the line tie over or are you twisting the front right or left, if that makes sense.
Storm was bought by Rapala some years ago. Some of the Wiggle Wart models, specifically the "Big Bass Square" were taken by Rapala and renamed the "Crankin' Rap." They came #3, #5 and #8 models. Great baits, but Rapala didn't invent them - Storm did. Storm also made a high quality lure across their entire product line. I suspect if the molds for the basic Wiggle Wart was change it was Rapala that did it. No idea why.
Great video! You mentioned in one of your other videos that you had some wiggle warts custom painted but I cannot find it. I know you are busy but could you possibly provide the color patterns again please? As always thank you for your information!! :)
Is this a 3/0 or size 3, because the 3/0 I found are $16.00 for 4 of them which is some kind of modification to the wallet. Does anyone have another alternative that I am not seeing... Thanks
Randy, can you start linking the products you recommend in the description of your videos? Doing this will allow your viewers to find the baits easier, and you’ll get a small percentage of each sale if you get a custom affiliate link. You should talk to Jonny about this.
Great vid. While you are a much better angler than i'll ever be, not sure about the clips being a point of failure (unless storm uses cheap clips). I use good clips that are higher rated than my line and a clip has never failed me. The line breaks first if I get frustrated when stuck on a log or rock and just pull it.
Why are the pre rapala wiggle warts so sought after? Was the plastic they were made from provided a different action? Or is it just nostalgia and scarcity that lure people into thinking the old ones work better than the new ones? I would like to know before I spend 30 bucks or more on an original.

Hey Randy let's have a video on Magnum wiggle warts that's not a mate I hear a lot of pros talk about I'm kind of into him I want to hear your perspective
Have you did a video of highlighting how water magnifies our crank baits really in clear water . Two I boil my old cranks to give em a very erratic side to side up down and dart this way that way for reaction strikes also if everybody throws a crank then you'll have a different look in it's action . Please do a video on thaes two facts ..
Watched a video of old school Wart vs new one in swimming pool. Not even CLOSE. The old one hunts left and right of center after deflection as it bumps bottom. New one does not do that. Not disagreeing that on a particular day they might not want the new ones more subdued action... but day to day I'm throwing the old one. Video also showed a knockoff that's 2 bucks you have to paint . It had almost identical action as old Wart.
Randy I don't usually comment but to say the new warts are just as good as the old warts is false! Randy you being a tournament angler know there is a difference. There is a reason why you still have your old warts and not sold them and replaced them with the new ones. The new warts do not hunt like the old warts and you know that with all of your experience. The tooling is different, the plastic is different, and the action is different. For the average person not fishing tournaments you are correct, you don't need to spend the extra for the old baits... but every tournament angler who puts their money on the line has a stock of the old warts they will not part with.
So, listening to your mod and something that was picked up. No way unless I am missing something you are using 3/0 and 4/0 hooks. Maybe you meant to say a no#3 and a no#4 maybe?
No such thing as a silent Wiggle Wart. (In the pre Rap ones anyway). If a Pre Rap is silent, then the rattles are stuck. Stuck rattles are more common on the softer plastic clear bill ones. I have a vid on how to free the rattles if you need it.
I was salmon fishing today in my paddle kayak. Trolling wiggle warts was my best option for speed and depth in a small kayak.
