- Replacement of the piston rings on my 1974 David Brown 996.
I have known the compression has been down on this engine since I bought the tractor.
She was breathing fairly heavily and was an absolute pain to start from cold.
I was expecting to find the rings worn, but not broken as I did find.
The reason I believe for the rings being broken was that the injection pumps cold start advance tap was seized in the advance position when I brought the tractor. - Авто та транспорт
Doing same thing to my 770 now (Dec 2020). same symptoms -- hard to start, low power, and lots of blow-by. In my case the lands were broken on all 3 pistons. Waiting on parts to arrive now. Thanks for the video
Well all I can say is the three cylinder David brown is a beautiful engine even now I am certain it is one of the best three cylinder tractor engines to come to Australia

I recently got a 1974 996 and there are sparks coming out of exhaust so I think ill be doing what you did. Might send the head to get refurbished at the same time. The hydraulics on these are trying. Could you do a vid showing the hydraulics leaver positions and where it sends the fluid? The 3 way valve style on mine is not in any of the manuals 😀 Good vid :-) M
I know its more work and cost but is'nt it better to re do the whole engine from top to bottom.Will the new rings not put other worn parts under pressure?

Marko, No I didn't as I didn't have any issues with regards to oil pressure. The shells has a few minor grazes but not enough to warrant replacement of them.

Tell me what cost wer you out as reguards parts? Obviously your labour was free and would of cost a few boob more to pay someone and @ least this way you knew the job was done rite.
Mite have to do this to a1210 and just need to get sum idear of parts and prices roughly....👍🏻
Marko the job didn't Cost a huge deal of money. I spent less than £150 doing the repair. I got the parts for the job from Agriline. Time wise I think from start to finish the repair took about 8-10 hours.
Admittedly I have now aquired another engine to drop in it as mine seems to be suffering with a touch of porousit.

Hi there. I got my Piston rings from a company called Agriline. I had a quick look on there website and they do seem to list Piston rings for a 1390. All the best and good luck

thats a v good battery! how would ya know if an engine was bad? did some heavy topping yesterday noticed a lot of oil around the engine thats not normally there ,but she v easy to start even after 2 weeks of being idle in winter one tip,
In my case, with many years of experience in the trade, the syptoms were there for a bad engine i.e: poor starting from cold, heavy crank case breathing and exessive oil consumption.
when I bought the tractor 12 months ago, it had been left and run on advance for about 10 years (the little tap on the bottom of the fuel pump) wich is what I believe caused the fault.
I wouldn't take an engine oil leek to mean you have a bad engine, you could just have a gasket leaking.
+Robert Smith thanks for the info, I think ur right about the engine been good as it was able to cut heavy rushes with an old tarraup single chop harvester, running at 540 pto at 1800 revs ,seems to be leaking around the water pump area,( 1973 db 990, )
+CORRIGEEN71 it might just a be a simple rocker cover gasket. Fairly common thing. Cheep fix if it is.
@@bobthesmug the block is cracked on my father's one he's had it since new already had two rebuilds and needs another but I need to source a block first
I c no difference she needs a good heat to start
This old pup doesn't have a heater plug! It has an advance tap on the pump to aid a cold start.
