Replacement of the piston rings on my 1974 David Brown 996. I have known the compression has been down on this engine since I bought the tractor. She was breathing fairly heavily and was an absolute pain to start from cold. I was expecting to find the rings worn, but not broken as I did find. The reason I believe for the rings being broken was that the injection pumps cold start advance tap was...

    I recently got a 1974 996 and there are sparks coming out of exhaust so I think ill be doing what you did. Might send the head to get refurbished at the same time. The hydraulics on these are trying. Could you do a vid showing the hydraulics leaver positions and where it sends the fluid? The 3 way valve style on mine is not in any of the manuals 😀 Good vid :-) M

      Hi Chris. The cylinder head was bought on eBay as a brand new exchange unit with valves. I think (but don't hold me to it as this was 2.5 years ago now!) the head set me back about £400. Hope this helps you. All the best, Rob

      @@bobthesmug thank you, I'm just stripping one at the moment, found a cam lobe just spinning on the shaft plus a broken rocker and damage to the rocker bridge. Looks like I will have to pull the engine and gearbox forward to get the head off for inspection as the bolts going to the egr cooler from the manifold side are like cheese and are rounding. Also timining chain is as slack as hell which I would say has caused the problem to begin with. Thanks, best wishes, Chris. Thanks for your hel

    Hi Robert thanks for replying back no I’m up north but was asking to see roughly prices .. mines giving bit of white smoke coolant bubbling and pipes rock hard .. the previous guy had had the egr cooler bypassed due to a break down in which he says was a suspect head gasket they had been oil in the coolant tank when it happened . And the garage van world Bristol must have sone the work this was bk in 2016 ish... it starts great sounds good got a strong pull on it .. doesn’t over heat no water in oil .. or coolant is your thoughts on it same as yours . Or do you think it’s something else appreciate any advice thanks scott

    • @bobthesmug
      @bobthesmug 3 роки тому

      Hi Scott. Not a problem. It does very much sound like either a head issue or possibly the head gasket beginning to fail. My suggestion would be to get a combustion leak test done on it as this will tell straight away if the pressure is coming from the cylinders. If you are lucky you may only be a gasket but if you we're unlucky like me it may need a head. I'm guessing the egr coolers must be prone to leaking thus getting bypassed. The cost of the job will depend on what you end up needing. This heap I have was majorly cooked due to a complete water pump failure and the lack of temperature sensor (just hanging behind the head). The van didn't run and had no compression on 2 cylinders. The head removal process on these engines isn't the most straightforward and is quite a fiddly job. At a guess you may be looking at a 10-16 hour labour bill, say £400-600 for a normal garage rate plus the parts. If you just end up needing a head set then it's possibly not going to be too expensive but it's if you do end up needing a head when it gets very pricey. If you do get it done and they find the head cracked, it may be worth getting them to send it to be pressure tested. Sometimes heads can be cracked, but not leak. The one in my van had far too much cracking on it so I didn't bother and just bit the bullet. I can happily report that 2 years on, and 20,000 miles later (2000 of which was clock in two weeks in my mad dash through Italy and back) I've had no issues. I hope this is helpful for you.

      @bobthesmug 3 роки тому

      I can't quite remember the price of the head, but I have a feeling for an exchange unit it was in the order of £560 odd. Then there was the cost of gaskets and everything else that was needed on top of that. What's happened with yours? Pressurising the cooling system and overheating? Sadly I can't really take on any work at the moment (van cars ETC I do as a slide line to my main work) as I've got backlog of work I'm trying to clear. I take it your here in Cornwall then?

    • @bobthesmug
      @bobthesmug 3 роки тому

      A rebuild would have been the better option, but the donor tractor I bought for far less than it would have cost me to rebuild the engine plus this way there was a lot less down time. Rebuild would have taken the tractor out of action for at least a month, where as this way it was out of action for just a few days

    All in all you had alot of work in that.Why did you not keep the engine in the cabbed tractor and use her? Was the lift gone in her ?

    • @bobthesmug
      @bobthesmug 5 років тому

      The reasoning behind the swap is that the cabbed 996's front axle was rotten out and collapsed on one side. I'd of also had to swap out all the loader brackets to get my loader to fit. The cabbed one would have also need all the hydraulic linkages freeing up as the only valve that is free on it is the quadrant. The hitch is also missing, link arms are worn out, brakes not working ect. It would of probably ended up being more work than the engine swap. Annoyingly I do now have to repair the gearbox on the cabless one now as you seem to have to go fishing for 2nd gear!

    • @bobthesmug
      @bobthesmug 5 років тому

      @@mariecarey7009 I wish it was a selector! I sadly know from a little bit of prior investigation that it is something broken behind the synchro. The 2nd and 3rd gear are synchromesh on this gear box, but they always have crunched going in since I've had the tractor. I'm just coping with it untill the end of the year until I manage to get some time to strip it down and repair it! Always something breaking on old high hour kit!

    • @bobthesmug
      @bobthesmug 5 років тому

      @@mariecarey7009 it may be that it's slightly glazed up. It can happen, but giving it some hard work can sometimes help. A bit of blowb-by never will heart anything. So long as it's starting without a problem as you say it is, and not drinking oil, I personally would leave well alone. A lot of old Ford tractor engines are like that. Breath heavily but are mechanically sound.
