I really, really like Snake Eyez, but he's just super wrong on this. Like, to put it in perspective, Fuudo just casually walked in from VF5 onto the SFIV scene one year and then proceeded to win Evo on his first try. There's always someone stronger, and the next best thing may not even be playing the game yet.

As a long time KoF fan I've been hearing SF players say weird bigot stuff since the early nineties. No KoF is not a "ghetto copy" of streetfigter. No most KoF players are not people who lost in pool in an SF tournament and decided to play another game. They seriously act like they are Ryu and we are Dan.
Time is limited tough, and you need time and other people who put the same effort to create a fighting game community. I feel like competitiveness between the games is inevitable since we still are a nieche genre. We're doing much better than before, tough

Imagine if another dev like NRS or ArcSys were the one with the timeless legacy and Guilty Gear was the Evo staple every year, getting all the esports/tv deals and sponsors instead of SF, you'd have the same top players saying the same thing, especially if SF was known for being the series with all the 'Jehovah's Witness' fans trying to convert everybody because 'the netcode is great'. In that scenario, all the top GG players would be the ones going "pfft yeah okay go back to your bathroom grand finals with all 8 people in your bracket", because they'd feel the same way about their status. Ultimate is more popular, they have the largest player base right now therefore Smash Top players are better than all of games in the played FGC.. I'm picked up UNIclr and the netcode is rough. But I was playing low bar players. The game is fun af tho. Gonna get more active on the discord. I have no issue with SF5. I just wish the games I like had more players. It is what it is.
That's crazy! It's felt almost like offline for me, but maybe I'm just getting really lucky. The last games I played were SSBU and Tekken 7 and SCVI though so maybe my online expectations were just low lol
Uniclr netcode is pretty good for a Delay Based Netcode. I can get an average of 3f delay with just using 10mbps wifi connection. Still prefer they use GGPO tho.
I can tell you for sure that Street Fighter players think they are god's gift to gaming and think they are the arbiters of what's a "real" fighting game. As someone coming over from Melee, I picked up Street Fighter because it was one of the easiest fighting games to learn. Some of the other games I was interested in were too intimidating in terms of execution and complexity. I figured I'd pick an easier one and work my way up as I got better at using fight sticks and doing those kinds of inputs and whatnot.
I have always been a Street Fighter Player. My friends got me to try Blazblue X tag. I love it. And the netcode is really good. Still play SF V on occasion. But sometimes a good game is just sitting there and you just don't know it until you try.

I think soku falls into “weird anime game, but good netcode”. There’s a discord server with a decent amount of active players, and I can comfortably play most of them. It was a side event at Frosty Faustings with 26 players in the bracket, but the small bracket doesn’t mean I enjoyed it any less. I just like the game.

This netcode-patch broke people. I actually jumped on and tried some Seth and Gill and I haven't played the game in over a year... and holy shit. Why isn't all characters like them? Online was a smidge better for me than it used to be.

Not everyone is ready to take the Discord route and put the efforts required to join a community of players that's so limited it takes you hours of planning to get a few sets online.

A lot of these lambs never heard of a Gatling Combo in their life before and they started everything with crouching Lights and wonderd why they didn't deal any damage. Our new children have since then learned to love the interaction of Neutral and the added space of heaven for their playground. I invite all the curious and the interested in joining our community, we have advice and DPs for everyone! *priest voice ends* Seriously SFV made me hate SF. The player were so full of themself it was ridicoulis, it was worse during SFIV days, where there were SFIV player harrasing other FG forums on Steam, to tell them they play the inferior no skill game and they should all play SFIV instead. Who would want to be part of such a circus? Anyway after SFV was the trainwreck of disappointments that it was, at least for me, I started to look into other FGs. Turns out I do love Anime Fighter, especially Blazblue. Granblue is also awesome, combining the SF gameplay I liked with anime elements and adding GGs beautiful graphics on top of it..... sadly no PC port this far, I had to borrow a friends PS4 to play it. Melty Blood is also awesome, the game lets me play a Unga Bunga Shoto who hits like a truck has strong space control and strong pressure on top of big buttons. All in all, play what you like and if you're unhappy with your game, don't keep playing it just because it's "popular" check other FGs out, they all have active communitys and Discord is a great way to find people and matches.
Honestly, people are super hung up on population. If you have 20 active players globally and good netcode, you are set. If you have that and couple of randos dropping in once in a while, you can get a game almost whenever you want.
most players that play street fighter do so because of clout and money. They will have a really hard time transitioning to another major game like mk or tekken, plus they don't make as much money. It makes sense that a lot of strong players from other games play sf. To say that those players are better than people that play x game is ridiculous. for example tokido played a crap ton of kof for many years. He put all his time into sf presumably because that's where he could grow his career and he already liked and was comfortable with that game therefore it was an obvious choice. However, I would also argue that if a game like kof had the same success in the states as it did in china, korea, latin america, and japan. He would probably be playing KOF right now instead, as would many other japanese players in respect to the game they used to play that didn't receive enough money to make a career out of it. Snake eyes would be like, yo players that play kof are this much more etc etc. Arguably Snake eyes' argument is more about which game allows you to create a career out of it not which games are either inherently more difficult or which games produce stronger players.
Well, it IS an issue when the FG you want to play is unpopular enough that you have a hard time finding people to play with on a regular basis. You have to start adjusting your daily schedule to the hours in which at least some people play (or reach out to players on discord, which is a hassle and they won't even always be available), and chances are the skill gap between a new player and anybody who still plays is so huge the newbie can't even learn much from his defeats. There's also most likely a lack of helpful content to watch and etc.
I think that reason is perfectly fine. This is also why the whole 'join the discord' advice is mostly meaningless. I love KOF 13 and SF Alpha 2 for example and those discords are a ghost town when I want to/able to play or people don't respond and are just talking about other things. Most of the fighters I love the most are small and getting games in is soo rare that the only way it seems I can 'scratch the fighting game itch' is to hop on SFV which I'm not the most fond of. Which is ultimately why I play other genres of games more than fighting games now (lack of good netcode in games aside).

While I agree that if you're not in the top 1% of players, its dumb to even talk about, but theres a lot to be said about a meta gameplay becoming more optimal faster the more people play it. If you had two rooms, one with 10 people playing a game and one with 1000 people playing the same game, the room with 1000 people would improve faster. There are lots of studies on this with games like go and chess.
All I need is 1 opponent who really pushes me to enjoy just running sets for like 3 hours. I can fight 500 people in street fighter who ,even IF we can prove to be good challenges for each other, can't enjoy the fight through the lag. I don't play games where the developers seem malicious or incompetent to the players, bad netcode is incompetence that I will just NOT be compliant with.

I mean it is a bummer when your event is canceled because they couldn't get 8 players or whatever. That's the challenge with being a DOA6 player.
I'm picked up UNIclr and the netcode is rough. But I was playing low bar players.
The game is fun af tho. Gonna get more active on the discord. I have no issue with SF5. I just wish the games I like had more players. It is what it is.
The netcode doesn't get any better at most levels but the games still Hella enjoyable.
That's crazy! It's felt almost like offline for me, but maybe I'm just getting really lucky. The last games I played were SSBU and Tekken 7 and SCVI though so maybe my online expectations were just low lol
Uniclr netcode is pretty good for a Delay Based Netcode. I can get an average of 3f delay with just using 10mbps wifi connection.
Still prefer they use GGPO tho.

I can tell you for sure that Street Fighter players think they are god's gift to gaming and think they are the arbiters of what's a "real" fighting game. As someone coming over from Melee, I picked up Street Fighter because it was one of the easiest fighting games to learn. Some of the other games I was interested in were too intimidating in terms of execution and complexity. I figured I'd pick an easier one and work my way up as I got better at using fight sticks and doing those kinds of inputs and whatnot.

I have always been a Street Fighter Player. My friends got me to try Blazblue X tag. I love it. And the netcode is really good. Still play SF V on occasion. But sometimes a good game is just sitting there and you just don't know it until you try.

I think soku falls into “weird anime game, but good netcode”. There’s a discord server with a decent amount of active players, and I can comfortably play most of them. It was a side event at Frosty Faustings with 26 players in the bracket, but the small bracket doesn’t mean I enjoyed it any less. I just like the game.

This netcode-patch broke people. I actually jumped on and tried some Seth and Gill and I haven't played the game in over a year... and holy shit. Why isn't all characters like them? Online was a smidge better for me than it used to be.

Sajam speaks the truth. But from a consumer standpoint, people can be legitimately concerned about having a sufficiently large player base if all they wanna do is play online matches. Not everyone is ready to take the Discord route and put the efforts required to join a community of players that's so limited it takes you hours of planning to get a few sets online.

Seriously SFV made me hate SF.
The player were so full of themself it was ridicoulis, it was worse during SFIV days, where there were SFIV player harrasing other FG forums on Steam, to tell them they play the inferior no skill game and they should all play SFIV instead.
Who would want to be part of such a circus?
Anyway after SFV was the trainwreck of disappointments that it was, at least for me, I started to look into other FGs.
Turns out I do love Anime Fighter, especially Blazblue. Granblue is also awesome, combining the SF gameplay I liked with anime elements and adding GGs beautiful graphics on top of it..... sadly no PC port this far, I had to borrow a friends PS4 to play it.
Melty Blood is also awesome, the game lets me play a Unga Bunga Shoto who hits like a truck has strong space control and strong pressure on top of big buttons.
All in all, play what you like and if you're unhappy with your game, don't keep playing it just because it's "popular" check other FGs out, they all have active communitys and Discord is a great way to find people and matches.
Honestly, people are super hung up on population. If you have 20 active players globally and good netcode, you are set. If you have that and couple of randos dropping in once in a while, you can get a game almost whenever you want.

most players that play street fighter do so because of clout and money. They will have a really hard time transitioning to another major game like mk or tekken, plus they don't make as much money. It makes sense that a lot of strong players from other games play sf. To say that those players are better than people that play x game is ridiculous. for example tokido played a crap ton of kof for many years. He put all his time into sf presumably because that's where he could grow his career and he already liked and was comfortable with that game therefore it was an obvious choice. However, I would also argue that if a game like kof had the same success in the states as it did in china, korea, latin america, and japan. He would probably be playing KOF right now instead, as would many other japanese players in respect to the game they used to play that didn't receive enough money to make a career out of it. Snake eyes would be like, yo players that play kof are this much more etc etc.
Arguably Snake eyes' argument is more about which game allows you to create a career out of it not which games are either inherently more difficult or which games produce stronger players.
Bathroom Gamer is appropriate. To be skilled to play while toileting would be sweet.
TL;DR play what you want, play what you like. Don't let some dude tell you what to play.

Well, it IS an issue when the FG you want to play is unpopular enough that you have a hard time finding people to play with on a regular basis. You have to start adjusting your daily schedule to the hours in which at least some people play (or reach out to players on discord, which is a hassle and they won't even always be available), and chances are the skill gap between a new player and anybody who still plays is so huge the newbie can't even learn much from his defeats. There's also most likely a lack of helpful content to watch and etc.
I think that reason is perfectly fine. This is also why the whole 'join the discord' advice is mostly meaningless. I love KOF 13 and SF Alpha 2 for example and those discords are a ghost town when I want to/able to play or people don't respond and are just talking about other things. Most of the fighters I love the most are small and getting games in is soo rare that the only way it seems I can 'scratch the fighting game itch' is to hop on SFV which I'm not the most fond of. Which is ultimately why I play other genres of games more than fighting games now (lack of good netcode in games aside).
Aye. Many a fighting game I stopped playing and even more I don't bother getting because I am tired of all of that.
My favourite fighting game doesn't even have netplay. So it kind of does matter to me how many people are playing it. :P

While I agree that if you're not in the top 1% of players, its dumb to even talk about, but theres a lot to be said about a meta gameplay becoming more optimal faster the more people play it. If you had two rooms, one with 10 people playing a game and one with 1000 people playing the same game, the room with 1000 people would improve faster. There are lots of studies on this with games like go and chess.
All I need is 1 opponent who really pushes me to enjoy just running sets for like 3 hours. I can fight 500 people in street fighter who ,even IF we can prove to be good challenges for each other, can't enjoy the fight through the lag. I don't play games where the developers seem malicious or incompetent to the players, bad netcode is incompetence that I will just NOT be compliant with.
