Exploring burnt remains of Bosnian castle 🇧🇦

- The "Stari Grad" or "Old Town" of Velika Kladusa dates back 800 years and has stood over the northwestern Bosnian city as a the symbol of the entire region. The castle has survived conquest by medieval lords, the Ottomans, the Austro-Hungarians and remained untarnished up to the present. Until, in April 2023, tragedy struck. The castle was struck by lightning on 14 April 2023, causing the main spire, the highest point of the castle, to catch fire and burn down. 14 April, 2023 also happened to be the first day of my trip to Bosnia. Naturally, on the 15th, I had to go investigate.
Join @sidelinesedo and I as we explore the castle and investigate the damages, just hours after the fire was put out. We were lucky enough to show up at the same time as the city workers who were investigating the damages themselves, and therefore we were allowed an exclusive look at the inside of the castle which was not open to the public at the time.
When investigating disasters to historical sites, though, it is crucial to look your best. That is why we begin this journey at the pijaca, or flea market, of Velika Kladusa to obtain some clothes and useful items.
Thanks for coming along :)

You forgot to mention a crucial part of the whole story about the caste! The castle is completely renewed by the Agrokomerc in 1990s. Before the renovation the old town was just a stoney skeleton construction. So the fact that you stated that construction that caught on fire is 200+ years old is not correct. I have the whole video with the explanation my UA-cam channel
Thanks for your comment! Good to know, I will check out your video soon. Are there any photos of Stari Grad from before 1990s?
@@BenTheRules absolutely there are photos. I can email them to you l, and I show some in the video. The whole concept of the old town and the reason why it was built/renovated was to help with education of managers in tourism industry which Agrokomerc was a big part of, with Hotels that it owned on Adriatic coast. At the end of the war in 1995. The place had 7,5 million € worth of furniture alone and people that own it today stole all of it. Funny thing…the guy at the end of the video has been running the place since the end of the war and hasn’t been paying the utility bills and investing in maintenance which is the reason why it caught on fire

Thank you for being respectful. Great video guys 😀
this was a great video
I used to bike to that castle often in 2004-2005. It's cool to see the area again after so many years.
It's a really cool area, I hope to go back again soon. Thanks for watching :)
My haggling tactics need a lot of work😢

It was nice to meet you! 😁

Part of "Turkish Croatia" ( Ottoman Turkish occupied Croatia).
Velika Kladusa you mean?
@@BenTheRules Yes, that whole area including the town of Bihac ( part of "Habsburg Croatia") and including territories further west.
The town of Bihac was captured by the Ottoman Turks in 1592 AD (the siege of Bihać in 1592).
Austrian cartographer Franz J.J. von Reilly included "Turkish Croatia" ("Türkisch Kroatien") meaning Turkish occupied Croatia, in his map of 1791 AD, this area is part of Western Bosnia today.
@@northernstar4811 Very interesting, back in those times cities were changing hands like it was nothing. The influence from both the Austro-Hungarian and Ottomans is clear, especially in the architecture (with a little bit of communist brutalism mixed in 😉). Thanks for your comments!
That's very true
@@BenTheRulesDon’t listen to him. Do your own independent research and you’ll find out that the term Turkish Croatia was anti Muslim Austrian propaganda…
It was beautiful castle ... One of my favorite in Bosnia
The traitor castle
@@Untrus Then, why you have this flag with Russian colors and their "Chieroglyphs" in your name ... Respect to shield with lilies, only ... Sory,I'm not Slavic, you know

Старый город in Russian: "Stariy Gorod". I used to study Russian, but now want to learn Bosnian. Would like to find a Bosnian penpal, ako dobri Bog da!
Hvala! Bosnian is a great language, it’s really hard but if you know some Russian it’ll definitely help
1@@BenTheRules Except when Russian gets in the way
@@BenTheRules lol
@@howardcurtis9138 To your place, not to us ... I can tell that you are pro russian, then take them to your country, not Bosnia
@@Bosniak803 Nope! You are dead wrong. I recently lost a pro-Russian friend when I told her I thought we should bomb the "f" out the Kremlin and put the "b"s out of their misery. I hate war, but when a bully invades your country, you have no choice but fight back. I hope we continue to support Ukraine until victory is gained over the forces of imperialism.
