Brahms is well known to have burned many of his works which he thought were less than great. And in his very last days when he knew he would soon die, he burned many of his original manuscripts of works we have never heard.

His playing is awesome, and how he keeps eye contact with orchestra. I never had the privilege to attend his conceets . But as to modesty and addressing the audience, by way of contrast: take this selfindulging superstar for instance, one named Mr Schiff: when someone had a fit of sneezing during a Schiff-Goldberg-variations matinata I attended some 25years ago, the maestro literally stopped playing, and instead of politely saying "Gesundheit" with a smile and thus making lifelong friends of the whole audience, he told that guy in the audience off in an embarrassing way. (no, it wasn't me😄)
Owing to his anal sphincter like behaviour that morning he will always remain engraved in my memory as just that: an anal sphincter. And I don't care the length of the three letter accolades trail behind his name.

Laura Siebenga Brahms was the most amazing of composers. How he was able to get so much power out of an orchestra of Classical-era proportions was unprecedented in a time where orchestras were expanding exponentially (think Mahler, and Bruckner).
Brahms: the arch-Romantic, yet always guided by a sense of Classical period constraint.

Emanuel As is a stand alone "marvel" and "charmer" at the same time. I couldn't agree more with others who have left similar complimentary remarks. Brahms compositions
are charged with such energy and deeply conceived melodic content. Folk music is
not far away in his thoughts, as it is with many other composers. Bless his spirit, which has become his legacy of inspiration and admiration, to say nothing of the exhilarating delight left to us to enjoy and respond to in our individual processing. Lucky us to have this performance and for the effort to post it.

When will we stop applying term “the best” to our favorite musician ? There were and still are incredible pianists, that brought joy to our ears and hearts. If they sound “perfect” to us, that doesn’t matter they are to others. Pianists’ different interpretations make the same music multifaceted, colored differently. Otherwise the mechanic piano would do it the same every time, o joy!

Emmanuel Ax transforms the first movement into a fantasia. The Brahms 2nd. Sounds “hot off the presses” sparkling new! Ummmbibiss! PWG. P.S. I had thought to listen only to the first movement. So much for that!

@@chrislinhares7311 I don't think they have a cold so much as they just have to make a sound after having sat quietly for so long.

Simply the most wonderful performance. Sadly I only recently discovered the Brahms 2nd. Not proud of that but I have listened to this recording at least 10 times since. I smile, I cry and it even keeps me inspired while working out. I love the “wow” at the end because that is exactly what I felt! Thank you Emmanuel Ax! 💞

Passionate, involved, powerful and involving playing. Bringing out the chamber-music element of this great work. I remember his participation in the Leeds Piano Competition some years ago. Excellent.

Brahms … no words to express the beauty and depth of this masterpiece. Keeping me constantly wondered.
Mr Haitink understood Brahms so very well, they are awesome partners with Mr Ax and the orchestra. Maybe the tempo of the first and third movement should have been slightly slower allowing the depth of the music opening up better, otherwise the 4th movement was in perfect tempo in my sense. The orchestra and all its soloist sound absolutely beautiful. Always a joy to listen this music but the details, excitement, freshness, cheerfulness, the richness of sound at this performance were superb. Mr Haitink we miss you, rest in peace!

If this doesn’t bring you some measure of joy and happiness and put a smile on your face, I don’t know what will....it’s amazing how effortless this appears for ‘Manny,’ knowing full well how nervous he probably is inside. Note perfect....by no means. Ironic how it often seems that many of the easier ‘gimme’ notes are the ones that so often escape. That said, these do not detract in any way from what is a beautifully rounded and exquisite interpretation and performance. In an age when it seems that practically everyone now plays and performs Rachmaninov 3, it’s really refreshing to hear this other once-feared ‘monster’ concerto again. I would like to see more of today’s outstanding generation of pianists programming the Brahms concerti more often. In many ways, Brahms 2 is a much more difficult beast to pull off - perhaps that’s one of many reasons why. Hmmm...

Thank you for being such a great Maestro AND precious, unassuming human being, Mr Ax.
You are simply a nice guy. I watched your 1O1 interviews in your weekend cabin. No Superstar fancy monkey business BS. Just nice, modest, jovial, dziękuję Ci bardzo.
And PS, same goes for maestro Haitink too. We owe you & the Concertgebouw Orchestra & maestro Arrau the all time best Emperor 1960 recording. Dank U veel.

Hervorragend, einfach weit hervorragend!

I love watching Emanuel Ax's expression as he comes to the end of the Third Movement. A sustained smile, almost childlike, appears on his face -- watch for it 38:30. And why not? He's been engrossed in the keyboard before him and he takes a brief pause to appreciate what he's doing. And another big smile as he completes the last notes of the Concerto -- this man loves what he does.

Beautiful really. Thank you! I love this performance with two of my favorite musicians. I was browsing the Emanuel Ax catalogue on UA-cam, and after his Mozart PC 22 (which is a big recommendation, his candenzas are superb!) I came across this Brahms. With Haitink (the guy still lives, 90) this is so beautifully and powerfully performed!

Einfach wunderbar!
