Giulini was such a great interpreter of Brahms. The orchestral part is completely symphonic, and Giulini handels it fabiously. I heard the second concerto for the first time in Jerusalem with Arrau and the IPO in the late fifties. I was just overcome with this exceptual work
¡Muchisimas Gracias!. Nuevamente, gracias.
Thanks Classical Music for this remastered version of an historic recording. Arrau plays in a different way than his Beethoven, he becomes with Brahms a tragic romantic, his emotion is magical and overtaking. The deep tristesse of Brahms is not effaced by the epic volume of the orchestra. A truly romantic rendering of a great romantic work.
I have come to Arrau only recently and it was through my love of Chopin. I will not give up my other recordings of the Nocturnes, but I quickly got a 2nd hand CD available of Arrau, after hearing it through this channel. As if a different piece altogether! I'm not generally a Brahms-fan; too buttoned-up for my taste, but the 2nd Piano Concerto holds a place in my heart. And I LOVE this recording!! The word poetic is used bu someone in a comment here, and I can only second that.
This is such an in-depth interpretation and a epic vision of these most wonderful concertos, in as far as one can call them concertos (I wonder if anyone has made a arrangement of them without the piano part and changing the piano part into orchestral part). Brahms was perfect for CA style of playing with his huge range of colors and emotional and intellectual depth. I have always treasured his recordings from the moment I heard Beethovens Waldstein and Les Adieux sonatas and was blessed to hear him play live and all Beethoven program. It was a revelation for me. I do feel he is a little bit forgotten, at least one doesn’t hear him mentioned often. But most definitely among the giants of last century classical piano playing.
The marketing folks have to push their latest product. And there's often a new artist with something to say. But the past masters were so for good reason. Which is why THIS CHANNEL is so vitally valuable to remind us of past glories. Like this one
Arrau would not be forgotten. Just as Schnabel, Cortot, Backhaus would not be forgotten. Because they experienced and expressed the classical periods classical music was the main stream of music.

Brahms was called the Messiah of the classical music grandiose repertoire of excellence after Beethoven....Brahms has a German Reformation Protestant religious historical background related to Martin Luther... Claudio Arrau a legendary best pianist of Latin Chilean German origin related to the Divine Western Judeo Christian moorings who is the exponent of Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms and Debussy a philosophical prince of Steinway piano... Claudio Arrau has Buddhist philosophical orientation and Catholic comprehension because of the French beautiful impressionist Debussy....Carlo Maria Giulini is of the Vatican Roman Catholic empire from Italy related also to the Divine Western Judeo Christian moorings...
Quel dommage!
I prefer Helene Grimaud’s performance of Brahms Piano Concertos 1 and 2. She has a light touch in the parts requiring ease and a firm, strong touch, but not a heavy banging to those sections that require firmness. Her technique is without equal and she brings just the right amount of passion and sensitivity to both pieces. She is never overwhelmed by the orchestra, they work as one.
Arrau is not a pianist that I ever liked. I find his performances too controlled but this Brahms d minor concerto is up there that of Gilels and Gelber
Radu Lupu playing Brahms piano concerto no 1 with The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1996 video UA-cam! Lupu a class of his own playing Brahms piano concerto no 1!!
Very much the same. I respect Arrau's meticulousness a lot, but this is one of the rare instances where his super deliberate playing actually really works for me.
No one forces you to listen to a work of a composer you dislike. Instead you could listen to something else, and save yourself and the rest of us from your toxic comments.

Giulini was such a great interpreter of Brahms. The orchestral part is completely symphonic, and Giulini handels it fabiously. I heard the second concerto for the first time in Jerusalem with Arrau and the IPO in the late fifties. I was just overcome with this exceptual work
rankedar118. TOTALLY agree!!!
¡Muchisimas Gracias!. Nuevamente, gracias.
Sin duda
Thanks Classical Music for this remastered version of an historic recording. Arrau plays in a different way than his Beethoven, he becomes with Brahms a tragic romantic, his emotion is magical and overtaking. The deep tristesse of Brahms is not effaced by the epic volume of the orchestra. A truly romantic rendering of a great romantic work.
Beautifully stated!
So true!!!
I have loved thee recordings for many years.
I'm convinced the second concerto's andante is one of the most gorgeous moments in Brahmsian ouvre.
Yes, but it is really a 'cello sonata with orchestral accompaniment!
I think someone should try to convert a symphony into a piano concerto.

Felicitaciones

J'aime !
Eu necessitava me maravilhar ai encontrei Arrau e Brahms.
Arrau a apoteose chilena!
Please, Could you tell, which orchestra with maestro plays this concerto?
Philarmonia Orchestra London
It's not rethoric, it' love .

"I will not be rushed"
Too slow. I prefer Curzon & Szell
for the 1st concerto.Definitive imho.
Quel dommage!
Forgive the ignorant inquiry, but is this New Mastering available anywhere in a FLAC file download? Thanks.

Very much the same. I respect Arrau's meticulousness a lot, but this is one of the rare instances where his super deliberate playing actually really works for me.
Wonderful pianist, terrible composer.
Enlighten me, who are the poor pianists and wonderful composers, eh?
_You_ may not like Brahms, but you will have a hard time convincing the world he is terrible. The case is already settled, you lost!
A rather arrogant comment!?
Terrible pianist, terrible composer.
No one forces you to listen to a work of a composer you dislike. Instead you could listen to something else, and save yourself and the rest of us from your toxic comments.
Haha you joker
Orchestra is just about perfect, best I've ever heard. I think less of the solo piano performance.
Philadelphia Orchestra and Czech Philharmonic much better sounding Orchestras!!
