And they still managed to not only give it a normal headphone jack, but a triple slot for an SD card and 2 sim cards at the same time. Companies seem to think making things paper thin will make them better. Ok so your able to get the same performance in smaller components so use that efficiency and scale the components up make them better and keep the same size. Were at a time where getting thinner doesnt really appeal to anyone anymore and we just want performance.
We’re at the point there’s only so many things you can do with a rectangular slab. When there’s no holes or bezels, this is one direction they’ll experiment with. There’s foldable phones too, but I don’t care much for that because that’s extra work. The pocketable slab is enough for my use.
Don't know where you live, but here in Jamaica every girl I see has a busted screen on their phone cause they shove it in the back pocket of very tight jeans. Plus they twirl their headphones around with the cord like it's a piece of string, with predictable consequences. Thin is good? The phones should be a couple of cm's thick!

@lance4862 bad marketing on Samsung's part, I saw the Fold 5 for as low as $1170 on Amazon (and heard someone else say they got it for $1000 new at Best Buy) so clearly they don't actually expect people to pay $1900 for it - so then what do they gain from setting the sticker price that high? Does it attract some people to buy it because it's on "such a good sale"? Yeah, I could see that. Encourage people to trade in and upgrade more often because their trade in deals are "so good"? Sure - I mean I traded my Fold 4 for a 6 and wouldn't have if not for it only costing $700, they got me there. But I see so many comments from people who see the $1900 sticker price and just laugh at it, that I can't help but feel they probably would get better sales if they launched it at $1300 sticker price like the S24 Ultra. They obviously would still turn a profit, seeing as they sold me mine for $700 and a trade-in worth $400 secondhand. Enthusiasts know how to shop deals and aren't paying $1900 anyway, and non-enthusiasts simply are not buying folds. I do not get why they thought it was a good idea to mark it at $1900.

To be completely honest, the previous iPads were thin enough for quite literally everybody, nobody asked for thinner. Keeping the design the same thickness and giving them a 50% boost in battery life would have pushed people to buy them FAR more. Especially for people like artists. Their use case chews through the battery within like 2 hours.
One very special example of design over functionality is the original BASF Maxima (also called Ur-Maxima). The design is still great, but in nearly all devices you only see black when using it.

There was a time that it mattered. I got the Motorola Razr V3 and thought it was great compared to my prior phone. But that's 2004. It hasn't mattered to in the 2 decades since. But I care about width / height being small, a phone should fit in the hand. I have big hands yet I still hate this trend of massive phones.

Motorola has pulled this off once with the OG Moto Z with it's 2600 mha battery. That phone lasted about 3/4 of a day with normal use. I guess Apple also has a battery mod to sell to extend the phone's life 💴💵💶💷

My old OnePlus X was only 6.9mm thick, but they still managed to stick a headphone jack into it.
