      A submarine hitting a mine, if submerged there would be no way out, if on the surface the explosion could be catastrophic and no one could get out. This sub had not been seen for nearly 70 years, so no, the bodies were most likely not recovered. If you go to a National Cemetery such as the Pacific Cemetery, Punch Bowl, Honolulu, Hawaii, there are thousands of names listed as lost at sea. It was sobering to see so many names. This is only one cemetery, in one theater of war for, one country. World wide tens, possibly hundreds of thousands maybe millions were lost at sea whose bodies were never recovered, as well as those who were purposely buried at sea. War is not the answer...

    She is remarkably well preserved, for being submerged for so long. I am surprised at how little sea growth and decay from oxidation seems visible. It appears to me her dive planes are up. Am I correct? A lot of damage where she struck the mine it seems, though some of that may have occurred later I suppose, after the superstructure decayed and the nets snagged on her. Sobering. She holds what little remains of the 57 submariners that went down with her. Still on station, still on duty, still at sea. Nice job on the video. Tks.

    • @akouris
      @akouris  7 років тому +21

      The submarine is in a good condition - it is seating a smooth sand bed and maybe that has helped. Planes appear to be up but I have noticed changes due to nets that have been dragged - the submarine gun appears to be twisted between dives.

    Seeing a person swim around the hull really gives you an idea how big these submarines are. I'm just fascinated humans have created such huge objects that can move underwater. And also a bit horrified at the thought that escaping these steel tubes is almost impossible, even when the water's surface is within sight.

      A scene was cut from the movie "The Abyss". The first time I saw it a military sub was sinking, damaged, and a sailor is at a water proof door ready to slam it and contain the damage. But there's one sailor frantically running towards the door, and the sailor at the door waits, 'til the other makes it thru.
      Then tries to slam and lock the door. Too late, Water pushes in and everyone dies.
      I've watched the movie on TV several times, and never seen that clip again. I'd guess they thought it was too "dark".

      I read that story, too. The screwed up part of it was that nobody ever believed him. He was some kind of commando on a top secret mission, so his presence on the submarine was top secret. Really, who would buy a story like that? Especially the part about him being the only survivor.
      But if you want a really great story to make a movie about, how about the fate of the USS Tang, the only other case I know of where anyone managed to escape from a sunken submarine. Add to that the fact that they were sunk by their own malfunctioning torpedo, and that those that did manage to escape had a harrowing story, being trapped in the sunken sub all night while the Japanese dropped depth charges on them, and the fire in the next compartment, scary stuff.

    At Cuxhaven - Dunen there was (closed) a wreck museum. Outside they has several exhibits one was a British sub Conning Tower. I stood in it and that had a wheel also
    One more interesting exhibit was a SEEHUND 2 man su with cut outs perspex covered to see inside. These remarkable minis carried 2 torpedoes externally and did sink ships at the end of the War. Fitted with periscope schnorkel diesel and electric engines. The 2 man crew actually sat in deckchairs. To obtain a 'trim' they slid a weight under their seats backward or forward.
    Perhaps primitive but it worked. On the other hand you had to sit in one position for maybe 36 or more hours

    I'm guessing all the lines that cover it are from fishing operations in the area snagging the wreck? They seem to have quite a bit of force behind them in places (like turning the deck gun mount ect).

      I signalled to him that his first stage has a leak, and he acknowledged it by adding with his fingers that it is a "small" leak. It is not a standard dive signal ofcourse!

    Would be great to see the dive profile off your dive computer: actual bottom time, deep and shallow stop times RNT post dive etc. I assume you went onto Nitrox at about 20m, is that right?

      Thanks, looks good, I assume the red section is a 'too fast ascent'? Can I ask what depth you went onto EAN50? I'm assuming you swapped to EAN at 21.7m, this would put you just slightly shallower than your MOD for 1.6 bar for .50, by my calculations, is that right? Looks like a fabulous dive by the way, and still having 17 degrees at the bottom is awesome. Thanks for the graph, nice learning tool for all us other divers :)

    • @akouris
      @akouris  6 років тому +1

      Switched to EAN50 at 21m, however Suunto doesn't like 1.6 at that depth and keeps warning you. Check more detailed images:

      If you are planning such dives I recommend you to get a Shearwater dive computer.

      Thanks, the link you posted is broken though. My Oceanic OC1 is pretty happy at 1.6 but I try to always plan for no more than 1.4 as a safety margin and the computer is always happy at the partial pressure.

    How thoughtful was to dive at 50+ meters, having a leak at the left air bottle? Or that third bottle should have solved any issue? Or playing games with own life, is part of the ”adventure”?

    En 15:56 se puede notar como el buzo, ve algo que lo incomoda y hace un pequeño sonido,
    como de sorpresa o susto, luego dirige su linterna hacia ese sitio dentro del submarino y se ve entre luces y sombras la razón de su sorpresa. Rest in peace.

    Good video of a WWII sub, but diving with a camera strapped to ones forehead records a lot of sound and bubbles when diving. A stick is prefered, just watch some of my videos and you'll see what great difference it makes!

    I have a dream to dive the HM Perseus. I am fascinated with the story. The water seems warm and clear compared to the California coast line. I’m curious if you fly into Kefalonia Island or is it accessible by boat only? Do they have TRIMIX available from the Island or do you bring gas mix and full kit with you?

    • @akouris

    why need the 3 tank?? it is for reserve if the other empty?

    • @benmac940
      @benmac940 3 роки тому

      In this case by the looks of it id say yes just reserve, but it also gives a redundant air source, in this case 2 fully redundant air source, and in some cases the side mount can be a different mix to either limit or speed up decompression
