I’ve been going to camp for 5 years and my counselors have inspired me to come back and be a counselor in two years

Wow, I want to be a teacher when I grow up and have never thought about being camp staff.
    I’ll look into that

Honestly, props to you. I know how much kids can be pains in the butt. As someone whose unfortunately never been to a summer camp(my family weren’t big campers and we were WAY too busy) it seems like fun! Though, I get home-sick easily, so probably wouldn’t be fun. Good on you though!❤

That sounds awesome! I’m also a camp counselor! I’m 16 now and me and 4 other counselors take care of 15 kids ages 5-6. I went there since I was a camper and then eventually aged up to be a counselor in training and went up from there so I didn’t need to do a interview (yay) but oml I love it there💕 there are definitly room for improvement- some people don’t realize how overworked some counselors can be :(
    For example:
Every other Wednesday I work a 12 hour shift so we can do what’s called a late stay and it turns out we don’t get paid for those extra 8 hours 😒
Also- it says we get paid $10 but my friend did the math and I’m getting MAX $8 (it’s salary pay)
I love the camp tho- if I didn’t grow up there I prob wouldn’t stay tho :( love the ppl and the campers!! ❤️

I love working as a camp counselor. I’ve done it for 5 years at three different camps (first one barely counts tho. Boss didn’t know how to run a camp and was a micro manager. Legitimately every morning started with us creating the schedule for the day, and due to micro managing she did the majority of things, especially when it came to the actual campers) one of them (that unfortunately is actually a very toxic work environment) had a problem for kids to get community service hours for school. You aged out of camp at 13 but can’t legally work until your 16. So for two years (if accepted) you volunteer as a counselor in training and then a junior counselor. Overnight camp means you’re technically working 24/7 so in one week you’d earn over 120 hours (5 full 24 hour days and 2 partial days for pick up and drop off). Depending on the number of kids in the program that year you were guaranteed between 2-3 weeks, though one week could potentially be day camp (which was fun, counselors still spent the night so we could chill together and so we didn’t have to get up as early) so less hours. But often you ended up working more than 2-3 weeks. There were 7 weeks of camp and my first year I’m pretty sure I worked 5 or six of the weeks. Assuming it was six minus day camp that’s over 600 hours of community service.

I did this. I am a teacher. Ive had other jobs. I worked in a print shop, i worked in an office, i worked retail, freelance, food service. Working with kids EVERYDAY is the most *exhausting* you lose all freedom. At least in other jobs you can still use the bathroom regularly! That being said, it can also be the most rewarding! But even with that, overall, it takes too much. Im tapped. Considering leaving teaching. Im 37.
