I was genuinely stuck in that tower for far too long. I had not brought enough supplies with me on my first run and could NOT beat Dialga for the life of me. I had to farm the tower just to get revive seeds, food, etc. The issue with farming Temporal Tower is the fucking monster houses.

Spacial rift isn't a final dungeon to anything
Sky Tower - 33 floors total (34 if counting the summit where Rayquaza is fought)
Temporal Tower - 23 floors total (24 if counting the summit where Primal Dialga is fought)
Glacier Palace - 29 floors total (Eastern and Western Spires are 12 floors each while the Great Spire is five floors)
Tree of Life - 16 floors total (Roots and Trunk are eight floors each)
I thought it was kind of interesting, knowing that the Tree of Life didn't even go beyond 20 floors like the others did.

My partner (Mudkip) and I (Cyndaquil) were in the level 50-55 range...and this was without level grinding.
My partner survived a Roar of Time after maybe two or three Reviver Seeds, and proceeded to use Endevour onPrimal Dialga...he didn't live long after that...
I honestly still don't see how Primal Dialga was hard...
And the few times he used Roar of Time, it only crit once...

Sky tower: Theres a sense of awe and wonder. Your traveling and exploring in the sky, its beautiful. But theres a haunting undertone, this is the final mission. And you know one of you isn't coming back.
Temporal Tower: A sense of urgency and dread. As if you know that whats waiting for you is too much. But more than that you know that time is running out. The constant ticking, any second could be your last. This is the greatest structure, the greatest dungeon in the known world, and all you can think about is rushing past it to stop the tragedy.
Glacial Palace: You're seeing something new. And any other occasion this woud be wonderful. But its terrifying, this is the end, and you need to band together and stop this monster. But you aren't afraid.
Tree of Life: End of the world. THis is it, the last battle, the last fight. Gods have come and fallen to save this world, to give you the chance to stop this Armageddon. Will it be enough? It has to be.
I think PMD2 had the best story. The pacing was pretty spot on the entire game, and all the side quests, like exploring an unknown cave behind a waterfall, were all fun and interesting. The game kept its main story present the entirety of the way through, and even when it was in the background, it was still present the entire time. It was a perfectly uniform rising action to climax to falling action, and the pacing of the characterization made the whole game so well timed.
In terms of story, I'd say PMD4 makes it into second place by a small margin. In terms of writing, the story is leagues better than the other two of the series, but it has some major pacing issues. The game's exposition is very fast and exciting. It gets slower but still pretty engaging with the school stuff and the hauntings, which I found legitimately intimidating, but then the story slows to a crawl once it gets out of Serene Village, and it's almost agonizing waiting for the plot to come back. Then once it hits the pre-climax in the fight with Yveltal and Nuzleaf, it kicks off and is brilliant to the end. The characters were a lot more colorful in this game, especially in the partner, who was much more cheery and independent rather than his more clingy predecessors. and it's hard not to get attached to the various others. This game tried to emulate the feeling of the exploration guild of PMD2 and fell short, but its characters were still pretty great. Plus, the ending plot twist is something to be admired.
PMD1 comes in third for story, only just behind PMD4. The story in terms of writing isn't nearly as good as PMD4 and 2. It's pretty all over the place and seemingly random, so it gives the feel that the writers didn't have a clear plan. The final challenge with the falling star and Sky Tower come pretty much out of nowhere, so the buildup that PMD2 had with Temporal Tower and Dialga just isn't there. But at the same time, the story's pacing was spot on. It never feels like there's a slow spot; something is always going on. The fugitive part was really exciting, and heading down into Magma Cavern was incredibly exciting after all the buildup. The game feels shorter than the other three, but the pacing is so quick and fun that its length feels right. The characters in this game are the most bland of all in the series. The partner has the least personality of all of them, and none of the other characters besides Gengar stick out as anything unique.
PMD3 comes in last by another slim margin, but it's by no means bad. The story has a few good parts, like the expedition of the Glacier Palace and the inclusion of entercards. The part about the mysterious pokemon hanging around the town were pretty engaging. The best part of the story was probably when Munna splits you up from your partner was actually pretty terrifying and exciting. The reason it's in last is because of the atrocious pacing issues, especially during the game's beginning. The story gets extremely bogged down in trying to develop its characters, but the characters are by no means interesting, especially when you look at the great characters PMD has given us. The beginning of the game drags on and on, and dialogue and cutscenes are atrociously long and full of pointless crying that seems to happen every few seconds (meanwhile other PMD games reserve crying for much more powerful scenes). It makes the game easy to turn off. The characters aren't bad but just aren't that interesting and make it feel like the writers are trying too hard. They lack the charm of PMD2's guild members and PMD4's school children. The only two exceptions to this are Munna and Hydreigon, who are both very fun characters, and Munna's redemption really does feel earned.
Anyway, those are how I rank the games in terms of story. Tl;dr: PMD2 > PMD4 > PMD1 > PMD3. PMD2 wins by a landslide, and the other three are much more close together.
Hope they re-make the EoT/D/S, just as they did with Pkmn R/S (to oR/aS) and G/S (to hG/sS), but in 3DS version this time, of course.
I personally think so. A more ambitious and well-planned story with better, more developed characters puts it above PMD1. It's only by a smidge though. A game with PMD4's story and PMD1's pacing (*cough cough* PMD2) would be a masterpiece.
Super Mystery Dungeon is definitely worth it to play. You should absolutely try it out. Gates seemed to be hit or miss with a lot of people. I personally enjoyed the game. The game's problem is early on, it gets bogged down in developing characters that are uninteresting and dull compared to those of other PMDs, but late in the game, I personally think the story starts to get quite good. You could try them both, but if you only go for one, go for Super.

I`m 90% sure that`s because Dialga made you re-play the dungeon over and over with the monstrous Roar of Time.
That moment when you're at the Sky Tower Summit and your partner keeps using Synthesis and dies to a Salamance.

My thoughts on the atmosphere of each of these dungeons:
Sky Tower: Let's go save the world!
Sky Tower Summit: Our fate is in our hands.
Temporal Tower: We have one choice; one chance.
Temporal Spire: If we fail, the world basically dies, if we succeed, I disappear. (The saddest dungeon).
Eastern Spire: We can do this!
Western Spire: This is going to be hard...
Great Spire: Merry Christmas!
Tree of Life Roots: There is still hope! We can and must do this!
Tree of Life Trunk: If we fail, we all die. Right now, everyone is standing on our shoulders. We HAVE to succeed.

PMD2 literally made me cry, since I got so attached to grovile and all the other characters when the player leaves everyone it hits hard. I think the writers try to get you attached to all the others so it's really impactful when they have to say goodbye... 😭 I'm so sad grovile had to leave, he was my favourite character!!!

Understandable. First I thought Grovyle, Floral Celebi (that's the nickname I gave to the Shiny Celebi), Dusknoir and even Primal Dialga was over, back when I had Explorer of Time. But then I got to play the Sky version, and I was pleased as punch when it turned out that none of the characters disappeared or died. I feel like this could lead to a temporal multiverse thing tho, where Arceus (I assume it was Arceus's doing since Dialga claimed that it was "someone even greater than himself" who allowed this to happen) basically split the timeline into 2 when seeing both You and your partner/ Grovyle fixing the time periods.
And this might be why you find them in Super Mystery Dungeon later.

My opinion about Gates to Infinity? It was pretty good, its short but I gave it a chance, and it was worth it. As a kid the ending of EoS didnt make me actually fully cry (dont ask me how) Though I had depressive thoughts after I finshed the game for like a couple months. Now just a couple months ago, I finished Gates to Infinity while I was just chilling in my bed. And...well, I can tell you...my pillow was covered with tears. I do really wanna reply the entire EoS game again since its basically my whole childhood wrapped up. The first ever game to actually make me shed a tear, feel anger, feel sad, made me feel actual emotions. This game, will have a special place in my heart for my entire life, and I will keep it that way.

EoS Didn't make me cry either, but Gates to Infinity and Super Mystery Dungeon did. Although I like the older mystery dungeon's nostalgia and some of the OST's better that GTI, I think the recent ones had more emotion, where as the previous games had a better story. I get that GTI wasn't the best in the world, but people don't have to treat other mystery dungeon games like they are a god and trash GTI.

I can relate. I didn't have any items and next to no HP on my last team member from floor 10 to the summit. Then the same thing happened AGAIN. I got to the top and died to the boss.

For some reason I have this love for Temporal Spire music, it is peaceful but the clock is ticking, you could say it is the calm before the storm. It is that moment you know you are about to reach the end, your final battle. It's suits the situation in the game so well and makes an amazing atmosphere

I think I honestly like the summit themes better than the main ones. To me it's the "*Slow breath before battle*" vs. the "It's getting real now". All of it is great music, though. I even like Gates to Infinity's music because it's so atmospheric.
Of course, if you listen to the motifs, you'll find the music a lot more meaningful, no matter what it is.

The main themes have something funky and exciting, like you are on your way to the final showdown. The summit themes aren't. They literally tell you: It's just a matter of seconds. Shit is about to go down you better be prepared
I much prefer the main themes to the summit themes. I'm not amazed by the summit themes in comparison to the main ones. I guess they sound too calm after the build up the main themes brought me.
Temporal Spire and Tree of Life: Trunk are by far my faves.

On mobile the Explorers of Sky music actually starts when the Time bar crosses over it
2D games: Climb a tower, fight a legendary Pokémon.
3D games: Traverse a floaty island, fight literal evil.
I always read that people struggled with monster houses but they are simple if you use the right tactics. Here is a monster house survival guide made by yours truly:
1. Never enter a room with an unusual amount of items. That is literally the game warning you that you are about to get jumped. Do not enter the room unless you are prepared. If ready proceed to step 2, if not ignore the room and find the stairs.
2. Set your team tactics to run away and let them go back far enough in the hallway in which you can stand at least 2 squares away from the room. Set your team tactics to wait there.
3. Enter the room alone to trigger the monster house.
4. Immediately go back at least 2 spaces into the hallway.
5. Now every fight is 1v1 or if you have teammates with ranged attacks: jump that Pokémon who foolishly walked in the hallway.
6. After wiping out the bulk of enemies in the hallway, searched the rest of the floor for stragglers who picked up the items (but never fight in a open room if you haven't taken out most of the monster house).

-In the event you didn't listen to step 1...stay calm, start step 2 but you will need to survive a turn of onslaught to let your teammates retreat. If you have an orb to weaken the enemies, this is the one time you need to use it. Follow the rest of the steps if you are still alive.
-in the event you are the unlucky soul who spawns on the next floor in a monster house (happened to me twice in my life so far) whatever you do...DO NOT PANIC! Hopefully you have an orb for this very situation to sabotage the enemies (if not you are going to need to tank some hits), Immediately try to get your team into the nearest hallway, and use the tactics above.
Hopefully this reduces the amount of casualties of the brave souls that venture into the mystery dungeons. If you have any other questions or tactics please comment below. Now I'm going to get ready for my Rescue Team DX nuzlocke challenge. Good luck fellow teams!

Glacier Palace Western Spire at 25:49 is my favorite theme of all final dungeons, followed by Temporal Tower and Tree Of Life Roots. 👌❤️

rescue team has the worst story
I've only played part of the 1st and 3rd ones, never touched on the 4th one, and the 2nd one is my favorite game of all time. So here's my review on it:
Story - 9/10 - I absolutely adore the story. I love how the mystery of how you became a Pokemon is solved and executed in a really great way, leading to an incredible battle with Dusknoir who you realised wasn't all he was made to be, and of course, the magnificent theme of "Sacrifice". The way the story progresses your relationship with your partner is perfect, and all of the major milestones in the story bring you closer to your partner. And while I admit that the story is almost a little to fleshed out and lengthy, it takes what it has and develops every detail of the plot very well.
Gameplay - 8/10 - God how I love how this game plays. What I can say for all the games in the series, not just 2, is that the gameplay is pretty smooth, and the idea that they can randomize an entire dungeon completely without problems is astonishing. While sometimes I do find problems, like not being able to go diagonally because the D Pad doesn't have a diagonal button and the control pad doesn't agree to much with the game, it's only minor things like that, which isn't too bad.
Graphics/Aethstetics - 9/10 - As it's only on the DS and WAS released in 2008, naturally you won't have spot on graphical capability. But the game does well with what it has. They make every dungeon look top notch quality, which the game can take pride in. The cut-scenes/stills used, like when Chatot encountered Kabutops in Brine Cave are extremely well done. Not much can be faulted, although because it was 2008, the gameplay's graphics won't be perfect.
Music - 10/10 - If I could I'd give it 100. Every dungeon has it's own unique theme music, which is hard to accomplish with so many in the game. There isn't a single dungeon where I want to turn down the volume, which is very impressive. A few choice favorites of mine (Aside from all of them) - The main menu theme, the Guild theme, Treasure Town, Waterfall Cave, Far Amp Plains, Craggy Crossing, Steam Cave, Fogbound Lake, All of the themes from the future (Duh.), Treeshroud Forest, Hidden Highland, Temporal Tower, Temporal Spire, Primal Dialga, Brine Cave, Lower Brine Cave, Sacrifice, I Don't Want To Say Goodbye, The credit theme, The theme from before your partner goes back home (3Sad5Me). And that's just the main game, since I never actually got much further than Scizor. But as you can tell by now, I'm a big fan of the game's score.
Overall - 36/40 = 9/10 - A few small faults here and there, but still, an absolutely incredible. Putting everything I've said together, it's quite easy to see why this isn't just my favorite Pokemon game, but my favorite game of all time. How this game got 58 on Metacritic I will never know, because it deserves a lot higher than that. I played and still play Explorers of Time but I'm sure Sky is 10x better.

completely agree. no game is ever perfect, and people argue how slow the gameplay can be at the beginning, but to me at least it builds up the story and makes it even more emotional at the end. this is one of my favorite games of all time, and i personally think it is one of the best games out of the entire pokemon series, let alone just mystery dungeon games. i haven't played the 4th one so maybe i could be wrong, but i think it's difficult for any game to touch the amount of story and emotion that Explorers of Sky has.
Except that that pmd 2 was released in 2007 and eos in 2009 so why 2008

I _really_ don't want to start an argument, but, as an adamant fan of the game...
... please stop treating Gates like it killed your pet. It has its merits like all of the other PMD games, but people seem to be flailing in blind rage at the diminished roster and shorter, lighter story. The story was dark enough to do what it had to, and besides, being dark isn't an automatic credit. The characters were more than strong enough to make up for it, and I felt that the length of the story made up for the pacing issues that PMD seems to struggle with.
Honestly, it's an amazing game on its own, everyone's just salty it wasn't the Explorers retread they were looking forward to.

The reason I don't like Gates is bcause they changed things that didn't need to be changed and didn't change things that did need to be changed. Partner AI is still incredibly stupid, except now there's no IQ to help improve it. The roster was way too short, and it was almost entirely gen 5 Pokemon, with very little diversity. The post-game was disappointingly short as well when compared to both Explorers and Rescue Team. I found the dungeons and music very forgettable. The music is very generic, and the fact that it was used as 'generic non-story dungeon' music in Super really says something. I also thought the story was way too short, and it was paced pretty horrendously. Nothing is happening for almost the entire game, and then suddenly everything is happening all at once. It's not a bad game, it's just that it's not as good as the others. Super took everything that Gates did right and then did it better, and then took everything that Gates did wrong and did it right.
Jumping Shiny Frogs The roster and post-game I will agree with you on, however, the rest I do not.
While the music was reused in Super, from what I have seen, most people enjoyed the Super reiterations of them despite them being exactly the same.
The story pacing was also much better than Super's, and in fact I'd say that Super had the worst story pacing out of the entire PMD series. Almost more than half the game is spent in "tutorial town" and not even all of the essential gameplay mechanics are introduced by the hour mark after starting. While nothing necessarily plot-relevant happens for some of Gates's earlier parts, it at least uses the time to establish the characters. Super does the same, but keeps going with the 1st Act of the story even after everything has gotten started.
...also one gripe I had about Super that really got on my nerves besides the partner's personality was how everyone would comment on how Pokemon were being "T-t-turned to stone...!"
But that one's just me, I guess.

red rescue team made me cry when i was younger and i literally find myself just listening to the soundtrack when i want to feel better, this game was literally life changing for me, it's became my happy place essentially. forever will love the og mystery dungeons
When I was younger and I unlocked the jukebox in explorers of sky, I would plug my ds into a charger and leave it playing all night bc the music helped me sleep. I would try to recruit every legendary by playing stages over and over, hoping they would spawn (Darkrai always eluded me). I wrote and drew side stories of the game and made up my own little mystery dungeon universe with my toys. Explorers of sky have the most amount of hours logged in any game I've ever played in my life. And now that red/blue rescue team is being remade, I can only hope for a chance to return to those simpler, happier days.

[No Username] um, no. While Explorers had by far the best plot, other areas... fall short. The idiotic partner and player insert, the removal of orbs for bosses turning them all into "hit them real hard", and the terrible AI are all better in at least one of the other games. Explorers is a fantastic game that deserves praise but stop saying it's perfect or flawless, because it's not.

when i first went to the sky tower on blue rescue team i absolutely LOVED IT like on my way to the top i loved it and every chance i got i would go there just to listen to the amazing music heck when me and my partner were level 100 i would just listen to this during my attempts to recruit rayquaza and other pokemon so i could fully complete it i still love like it has a special place in my heart

Sky Tower never stopped with the intensity. There was a constant surge of adrenaline the entire journey, as you make your way to stop the end of the world, do or die.
Temporal Tower brought dread. Every step you took unnerved you, as you had seen what would happen should you fail, not to mention the fear that you'd be too late.
Glacial Palace made you feel like there was no hope. You question everything, you start to wonder if you even stand a chance, but you know you have to carry on, for the sake of the few who have your back.
The Tree of Life made you feel overwhelmed, and yet strengthened by your friend's presence. You truly felt the fate of the world on your shoulders, and yet your determination didn't waver for a second, because despite how much the odds were stacked against you, you didn't have to face the end alone.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon never disappoints, and neither does its soundtrack. Each song perfectly matched my thoughts and emotions. A perfect series.

I could listen to temporal spire forever. The dungeon itself was brutal and I always get sad in temporal tower cause of the ending, but the music is exquisite to say the least.
I remember when i first got to glacier palace in gates to infinity, trying to find you way through is the one of the most difficult things ive ever done

My list from best to worst:
1. Temporal Spire: I mainly love it due to the mix of urgency and calmness. Easily one of the best themes in the entire game.
2. Temporal Tower: It's basically a faster version of Temporal Spire and sounds a lot more urgent, like you need to be quick or the entire world will end (which is basically what would happen in an alternate universe where you, the protagonist, failed).
3. Sky Tower: This one is a classic, with a nice blend of urgency and upbeat happiness to it, which is basically in some ways the polar opposite of Temporal Spire
4. Tree of Life: Roots: This one is mostly due to the motivating sound to it telling you to save the Tree of Life and the Pokemon world alike from being sent straight into the sun. Also, the church bells in it are glorious.
5. Tree of Life: Trunk: This is basically following the same thing as with Temporal Spire being more calm, yet urgent than Temporal Tower, except replace the calmness with a more disturbing atmosphere, and this is basically what you get with the similar, yet different nature.
6. Glacial Palace Great Spire: It sounds a little too cheery and lighthearted for my tastes, which is also a bit of a metaphor for my thoughts on Gates to Infinity as a whole.
7. Glacial Palace Western Spire: This is where things start getting forgettable and range from mediocre to bad. It gets a little better later on, but not by much
8. Glacial Palace: Eastern Spire: The weird sparkling sound effect in the background is going to be the death of me. Outside of that, it's a downright forgettable song.
9. Sky Tower Summit: This one just sounds outright bad and forgettable and manages to be one of the worst tracks in the entire series. Inexcusable.

I remember my very first time playing a Mystery Dungeon game (Red Rescue Team) so many years ago and having my starter be a level 34-ish Bulbasaur in Sky Tower. I think I was stuck there for like a literal month before I made it to the top lmao.
My favourite is personally tree of life (Roots to be specific.).
I've only played Blue Rescue Team and Explorers of Time/Sky when I was alot younger so the last themes, while good, are just tracks to me....But just flicking to the time stamp for Temporal Tower and especially Temporal Spire instantly made tears come to my eyes and made this massive wave of nostalgia just come crashing over me.
Same, i just remembered(?) That i played and replayed EoS for 9 years (2011-2020) and i remembered that i couldnt manage to get past the temporal tower... oh man the memory...

1: Tree of life radiant trunk- Tried many experimental ideas that were executed perfectly.
2: Glacier palace great spire- Symphonic Grandeur!

PMD Explorers of Darkness was my first ever Pokémon game and it was the start of my love for the Pokémon franchise. I still remember the day I got it. D: I was 8 and it was my Christmas present. I still know that I didn't get the whole story the first time I played through it (because I was just 8). But my second time a year later made me cry at the end and it still makes me cry when I replay it. Everytime I play it I get a "Nostalgia-attack" and I just want to go back to the time I first played it and enjoy my first time again. I'm happy this game took my Pokémon virginity and for me it will stay the best Pokémon game and probably the best game I have ever played

Tree of Life: Trunk (Literal perfection right here; the roots you can hear rotting away, the tragic situation with the Tree of Life, the gravity you and your partner feel going through the Trunk, and the vicious darkness rapidly surrounding the scenery? All of it is beautifully conveyed through this theme and I love all of it.)
2. Sky Tower (The OG final dungeon theme; I love everything about this theme from the flutes to bell chimes to the violins to the synths, and its way better in the GBA Red Version compared to the DS Blue Version in my opinion.)
3. Temporal Tower (Overrated high pick, yes, but this theme is rated highly for a reason; this theme represents time literally running out and you and your partner desperately trying everything in their power to reach Dialga, at any cost possible.)
4. Glacier Palace: Great Spire (This is an amazing combination of hope and determination as you and your partner venture up the Great Spire to destroy the embodiment of hopelessness.)
5. Tree of Life: Roots (It does an amazing job of setting up a magical ancient tree heading straight into the sun and the player and their partner rushing against time to stop it.)
6. Glacier Palace: Western Spire (The sheer chills (heh, another pun) this theme gives me is incredible; definitely the better of the two Glacier Palace final themes before the Great Spire.)
7. Temporal Spire (I absolutely love the solemn tick-tocks in this theme; only reason this theme isn't higher is because I just love the other themes more.)
8. Sky Tower Summit (Points for fitting the calm deadly atmosphere (heh, pun), but nowhere near as good as previous Sky Tower theme.)
9. Glacier Palace: Eastern Spire (Not a bad theme, but it's not very fitting as a final dungeon theme.)
Temporal Spire ties with Sky Tower in my opinion. They are so good i can't even express. I get shivers everytime
I will be honest, Glacier Palace Great Spire is my favourite OST of these, and Gates to Infinity is my favourite Mystery Dungeon. The story it's just... Beautiful. Maybe there are some lacks, like the slow text or personality quiz, but i think that isn't enough to say that GTI is bad.
