I understand the need to scrutinize the economic numbers reported by Modi’s government for accountability, but I think it’s more important to focus on if the overall quality of living is improving or not for the majority of the Indian people. China’s growth numbers have always been questioned by people outside China, but things like living standards, literacy rate, life expectancy, birth survival rate, import/export, electricity generation, highway length, car ownership, high protein food production, etc cannot easily be faked. Modi is a Hindu nationalist who openly discriminate against non Hindus, and his anti China policies are extremely unpopular in the eyes of the Chinese. I would say without him India could have probably done even better. With China’s rise and America’s decline, the global south is enjoying an unprecedented friendly environment for economic growths. And Modi chose to antagonize China, to instigate border disputes, to keep the best economic partner it could ever have away. What a bad decision his government has made.

I would say that being hostile to china may have gained additional western investment. However, too much hostility means wasting money on border defense and no infrastructure investment from china. But, it does help him win election, which is probably the most important thing.

Might be that you do have some products partly made in India but reassembled in your country, making you believe you bought a local product 🙄 Depending on your location/country Indian products are not being sold there, might be because of “too cheap” and therefore “spoiling” the protected market for selling highly priced products made in Western (NATO) countries 🤷♀️ That’s the situation in Europe for example for some products but yes textile products made in India are widely available. Contrary in Mexico they are selling all kind of stuff made in India (especially on local markets): textile products (especially made of cotton), smaller motorcycles (the non luxury type Mexican people can afford) often sold by Mexican companies using Mexican names but produced in India (Bajaj, Tata, for example) and other products. These motorcycles and cars are not even available in some countries in Europe for example.

It was also not subject to the embargo that was the signature of the cold war, where India was a part of the non-aligned movement and China was famously in the Soviet Camp and later had Sino-US detente, which is all to say, political troubles. Where are the two countries now? India is barely one fifth in terms of economy, no industrial capacity, heavy service sector manned by human resources, and no self sustainable military, which relied on arms from Russia, Israel and US. Where as China is already challenging the world superpower. Based on the social and economic factors at the beginning of independence, it should have been the other way around. There are many reasons why there is this discrepency, some are certainly economic and technological. But there is a important issue that is the trappings of the old society and class structure. Look at Modi and his ability to win votes on Hindu nationalism, which is divisive and perfectly copied from similar movements in the west (Trump, AFD party in Germany, etc), and look at the natural lack of natural class conscience that is similar to the rest of the west. If India want to progress with the same model like the west, then what makes you think India can do better than the west, who created and mastered this system? I think the biggest issue with india is its lack of talent. I went to school with many Chinese and India international students, all of them are very bright. I would say a good majority of the Chinese international students ends up going back to China, even if it means taking a paycut, because there are still more opportunity in China for entrepreneurship than the US. On the other hand, I haven't met any Indian international student that choose to go back to India after graduation. This is something that's very strange to me. Indian has a greater population than China now, wouldn't these students want to go back? The opportunity could be endless. I would be very interested if any Indian want to comment on the reason. India's so-called GDP growth is borrowing money from international institutions (including New Development Bank heavily funded by China for BRI), buy Chinese products in all their forms and shape, package them, put a "Make In India" stamp on it, and sell in Indian market. To give Modi credit, he also spends a lot of money of public work. All in all, India is EATING MORE and appears GROWING MORE. But nothing is changed fundamentally. All those foreign investments flooding the Indian Stock Market is for speculation. None of the money is for long term infrastructure and manufacturing ecosystem investment. It makes sense ... Taking into account India's ambition to take over the manufacturing title of China I think it would be wise to consider India's economy could be exaggerated. The objective of the Indian government is to entice foreign companies to invest and bring in their technology after which they will be happy if the foreign companies pull out leaving the infrastructure and technology behind. India has been known to be a death trap for foreign investors for years.

Modi implemented some terrible policies like demonitisation. Because of demonitisation so many small scale industries are closed. Unemployment among youth heavily increased. Farmers were also treated brutally by the current government. Farmers suicide has become a common thing India. Government don't want to ensure minimum support price for many farm crops. I hope the current regime will change in the upcoming election.

I have always admired the successes of American South Asian Indians. As an ethnic group they generate among the highest incomes in the US. Unfortunately, the system and culture in India does not necessarily foster the same degree of success with the exception of a tiny elite which exploits the many impoverished citizens. It would really be in India's interests if they could resolve their differences with China. If given the opportunity, the Chinese could be a huge source of investment and certainly a benefit to India by sharing experiences and practices which has made China so successful. America is always in the background always devising ways of thwarting any possible alliances that they see as threats to their hegemony.
As an Indian, some Indian men are so phenomenally rude the moment they shut the door, you will actually be shocked. Trust me, you have no idea. Also, services do not require much infrastructure or enable/facilitate the development of it. China and India were top 2 economies of the world for most of the time of the recorded civilization history, but the world is very different today, the renaissance of old giants is not guaranteed, the rise of China has many important factors such as Confucianism culture, political system, population, family values, emphasizing education, etc. Indian and Chinese do share some characters but there are also many differences, and it is very unlikely that India will be willing to reform following the Chinese model.

China’s growth numbers have always been questioned by people outside China, but things like living standards, literacy rate, life expectancy, birth survival rate, import/export, electricity generation, highway length, car ownership, high protein food production, etc cannot easily be faked. Modi is a Hindu nationalist who openly discriminate against non Hindus, and his anti China policies are extremely unpopular in the eyes of the Chinese. I would say without him India could have probably done even better. With China’s rise and America’s decline, the global south is enjoying an unprecedented friendly environment for economic growths. Contrary in Mexico they are selling all kind of stuff made in India (especially on local markets): textile products (especially made of cotton), smaller motorcycles (the non luxury type Mexican people can afford) often sold by Mexican companies using Mexican names but produced in India (Bajaj, Tata, for example) and other products. These motorcycles and cars are not even available in some countries in Europe for example.

Thats the thing, progressing peacefully and democratically, has been a failure. India gained its independence 2 years before China, without a violent revolution. Worse still for China, their world war 2 went from about 1931 to 1949, being 18 years of constant fighting, almost twice as long compared to India.
India began its democratic roots with less war, better social and economic conditions, and went earlier in time, with comparable population and actually more productive land. It was also not subject to the embargo that was the signature of the cold war, where India was a part of the non-aligned movement and China was famously in the Soviet Camp and later had Sino-US detente, which is all to say, political troubles.
Where are the two countries now? India is barely one fifth in terms of economy, no industrial capacity, heavy service sector manned by human resources, and no self sustainable military, which relied on arms from Russia, Israel and US. Where as China is already challenging the world superpower. Based on the social and economic factors at the beginning of independence, it should have been the other way around.
There are many reasons why there is this discrepency, some are certainly economic and technological. But there is a important issue that is the trappings of the old society and class structure. Look at Modi and his ability to win votes on Hindu nationalism, which is divisive and perfectly copied from similar movements in the west (Trump, AFD party in Germany, etc), and look at the natural lack of natural class conscience that is similar to the rest of the west.
If India want to progress with the same model like the west, then what makes you think India can do better than the west, who created and mastered this system? I think the biggest issue with india is its lack of talent. I went to school with many Chinese and India international students, all of them are very bright. I would say a good majority of the Chinese international students ends up going back to China, even if it means taking a paycut, because there are still more opportunity in China for entrepreneurship than the US. On the other hand, I haven't met any Indian international student that choose to go back to India after graduation. This is something that's very strange to me. Indian has a greater population than China now, wouldn't these students want to go back? The opportunity could be endless. I would be very interested if any Indian want to comment on the reason. Also on the matter of Caste system and corruption.

I hope the current regime will change in the upcoming election.

I have always admired the successes of American South Asian Indians. As an ethnic group they generate among the highest incomes in the US. Unfortunately, the system and culture in India does not necessarily foster the same degree of success with the exception of a tiny elite which exploits the many impoverished citizens. It would really be in India's interests if they could resolve their differences with China. If given the opportunity, the Chinese could be a huge source of investment and certainly a benefit to India by sharing experiences and practices which has made China so successful. America is always in the background always devising ways of thwarting any possible alliances that they see as threats to their hegemony.

Compared to manufacturing, services employ much fewer people. It does not scale. For a country like India, scaling is critical. Also, services do not require much infrastructure or enable/facilitate the development of it. This is the critical mistake India made: unlike China, it skipped a step in economic development -- it skipped manufacturing.

I travel to India often, however, whenever I buy an item 'made in India' it is poor quality and soon breaks. I purchased a hairdryer which burst into flames on the first use, as well as a food blender which worked only 3 times. Clothes shrink or the dye runs in the wash. The quality is just not up to standard.

China and India were top 2 economies of the world for most of the time of the recorded civilization history, but the world is very different today, the renaissance of old giants is not guaranteed, the rise of China has many important factors such as Confucianism culture, political system, population, family values, emphasizing education, etc. Indian and Chinese do share some characters but there are also many differences, and it is very unlikely that India will be willing to reform following the Chinese model.
India cannot achieve the same success as china because they are currently a neoliberal shithole. The only way they become a success story is by having a socialist revolution.

Manufacturing, services, whatever, India needs "something" that can provide employment for the mass, not just the educated IT professionals. I read something that's weird about Inida: umployment rate is inversely proportional to the amount of education received; ie very low unemployment for the illiterates, higher for those that went through primary schools, higher still for secondary school grads, yet higher again for those with university education. I'm not sure if this is a satire or what.
Since the last century we've already the situation where there are many highly "qualified" graduates who couldn't find jobs that correspond with their qualification. So what's new?

While Modi gov is pro business, there are too much legacy red tapes, plus political interest that could hamper the business atmosphere. Foreign investors, especially western ones, will learn that doing business in India is not easy. Meanwhile, the global economy has turned sour on free trade. Protectionism is on the rise, and India won't be able to count on following Asian tiger export oriented economic model to grow out of poverty.
