Hello Everyone & Welcome back to What After Dentistry. We recently conducted an interactive session with Dr Mahwesh Khan to discuss “Scope & Opportunities as a Dental Therapist/Hygienist in the UK after BDS".
Dr Mahwesh, is a practising dental therapist & hygienist in the UK since 2019. She completed her BDS from Dr NTR University in 2012, practised dentistry for 2 years and then moved to the UK in 2014.
Along with her work, she is also building her portfolio to work as a Consultant Orthodontist which includes passing MFDS Exam in the UK.
She is passionate about building a community of dental professionals who wish to practice in the UK, and she intends to guide them by sharing her professional journey.
To do this seamlessly, she created a platform by the name of "MeetYourTeeth" on various social media channels. She also aims to impart knowledge to the general public regarding oral health & how to have healthy teeth for life.

Yes you can! As long as you have the British visa with you, it is easy to get a job as a dental therapist/hygienist.

Not sure, but you can select both Dental Hygienist/Therapist in the same form.
in UK you can work as an a Oral therapist just by registering ? in New Zealand we have to study Oral therapist all over again !! the BDS here is worthless
Yes, as of now you can register as Dental Therapist and can start working. Though the registration process itself in the UK is quite difficult, with all the proper documentation and the CDP points.
I checked on internet about some hygenjst and therapist jobs in uk. Approximately how many percents accepts a sponsorship for an oversea seeker? Briefly is it diffucult to find a job as a foreigner? Thanks for informations
This route works for those who already have a British visa, like - someone who is on a dependent visa will easily find a sponsor, for others it is a bit difficult to find a sponsor.
Kindly let know For dental therapist registration is there is any exam for registration or it is just a documents assessment like HCPC??

Hello ma’am, firstly Thank you for your genuine guidance. If I’m not wrong dental hygienist can be done after 12th .. I just finished my BHMS now can i do dental hygienist is it possible to do ? After so many courses my eyes stuck into two programs MPH and dental hygienist can you suggest me which program is good forBHMS graduates students.
Go for MPH, that is a better option for BHMS.
I heard about if the validity of a bachelor's degree (BDS) is less than two years, that means that you are exempt from IELTS or OET, and it’s not required from the GDC is that true?
You need to submit structred english language reference forms verified by someone who supervised us during BDS

Very useful video . I tried downloading the application form but they ask you for dental ethics and law from a uk/ GDC stand point . We are not taught according to GDC standard.How to make up for that
For topics which are not taught, you will have to undergo the CPD programs she mentions in the video.

It is stated that if we are an overseas qualified dentist we cannot apply for assessment under this route since march 8 , does this mean that as a dentist I cannot apply for dental therapist?

The application process is explained in the video and this process is the same for all overseas aspirants. Alternatively, you can go onto the GDC website and file your application as Dental Therapist.

Mam,What about studying BDS in UK after 12th in India.
You can study BDS in the UK after 12th but check on the fees structure. For international students, the fees are pretty high and also check on the scholarship provided.
After registration how do we apply for visa n which visa can we take? And us it possible to take our Spouse n kids with us?
After successful registration, you should look out for sponsored DT/DH jobs; by sponsored we mean that your employer can help you to get the visa process done. But this happens rarely, that your employer will sponsor a visa for DT/DH job. So, this route works best for those who already have a work permit visa in the UK.
do you need ielts before applying as dental therapist in gdc?
Yes, IELTS is needed.

Is a hardcopy needed or fill the blank document with pen .
You will have to submit the documents online on the GDC portal. For more information, please read through the GDC portal and also connect with Dr Mahwesh to understand better.
You need to download the documents, fill it appropriately and get print outs of it. The signs and dates should be hand written ( ORIGINAL)

Good Morning... My wife is a Dental nurse in sharjah, UAE for the past 12years. She is a GNM nurse pass out on 2002. She didn't done any course for dental nurse. When she came here in sharjah she joined in a dental clinic and still continuing as dental nurse. How can she apply for uk dental nurse and how can she apply for GDC from sharjah. We tried our level best to apply for GDC in online but we failed. Can you please help us what should we do for this issue.
We actually do not help in the registration or application process. We would recommend you to please reach out to GDC and ask why the application is rejected, they will tell you the reasons.

@@mukeshchauhan5571 You need to get yourself registered with GDC. The process would be same as explained in the video. Please check with GDC, send them email about your application. They will give you all the details.
How many cpd points required for registration.
This differs basis your application. You can send your mail request to the GDC team and get more details on this.
There is no such mandatory requirement. It depends on what topics are not covered in your bds syllabus & are asked in the learning outcome form, only for those topics you would do a cpd course.
Can a registered Dental Therapist apply for a Hygenist role? Since a Therapist covers everything a Hygenist does
Yes, they can.

It is very difficult to find sponsors for hygienist / therapist. As these roles are usually self employed. This route is best for candidates who already have a visa.

You can start the application process during the internship, but the professional license will be given after the internship. Also, you need to see if they require an experience letter, then better apply after the internship.

There are no scholarships.

If you are in the UK on dependent visa, you can start with the process of getting yourself register for Dental Therapist. Meanwhile, while you do your registration process, shadow under a dentist and understand what all scope you have and build your network.

You can try with mydentist (www.mydentist.co.uk/). They are one of the biggest chains of dental clinics and they do offer some placements for overseas dentists in UK.

if u dnt hve British passport or British long stay visa the hygienist isn't beneficial if u get married and reach there now u can chose this route but on Indian or Pakistani passport no British visa stamped no one will give u a job from ur home town and will send u job offer as hygienist so only beneficial for those who have British visa already stamped

Mam , what is mfds ? Why it is done
MFDS is the acronym for Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery. Passing the MFDS examination entitles you to become a member of a UK Royal College. You can read more about this here: rcpsg.ac.uk/documents/application-forms/faculty-of-dental-surgery/mfds-training-package/266-mfds-what-is/file
MFDS is a royal college diploma qualification. It is a mandatory requirement if you want to get into speciality training in the UK

For practising dentistry in the UK if you are an overseas dentist then yes ORE or LDS exam anyone is required to get registered. For the remaining two questions, the answer is a yes.

Not required as such. Consultancies help you in expediting the process. If you are confident enough, you can apply on your own.

You'll have to register as a DT/DH with GDC first to work as a Dental Therapist.
Its very difficult to get a work visa for hygienist / therapist. But if you already have a visa then it should not be a problem. Provided you are GDC registered.

Yes you can. But one needs to have work permit visa, to get an opportunity. Without visa it is difficult to work as a DT/DH in the UK.
