As a scientists I love your channel! As someone who is a deep political thinker is another reason why I love this channel. Also, as a believer in a creator of the universe I love some of the guest you bring on. You guys talk about such a wide array of topics that bring so much of this channel. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite UA-cam channels more people need to subscribe to this. I’m telling everybody I know. This channel definitely needs to grow more in popularity.

Thank you for this great conversation. I’m also thinking about the covid situation in the terms you discuss, in particular ethical philosophy. I’m currently reading Bernard Williams and Elizabeth Anscombe, two fine English moral philosophers of the 20th C. who hated utilitarianism/consequentialism and have robust arguments against it, especially, in the case of Anscombe, the evil it forces one to do if one operates under the ethic (as public health does). Utilitarianism relies on data to drive decisions. Since the data around covid is so confusing and corrupted, it is therefore impossible to make calculations and thus sound decisions. This in my view is the main problem, they are making decisions based on poor data (that they may or may not believe is true). Neither do they have the imagination to foresee the consequences of their decisions so create an unholy mess! Then there is the problem of citizens not understanding the scientific method of enquiry and mistaking objective science for subjective Scientism. These people believe everything the scientists and public health bureaucrats say as they think they speak truth!

I was interested to hear that Illich admired Polanyi, who has also been my favourite 'economist' for a long time. I agree with David, portions of Illich's thought feel "not not libertarian." But what's typically neglected in the libertarian school, which Illich may have found objectionable, is the anthropological/historical dimension, which throws much of what the austrians regard as natural economic principles under a different light. Michel, since you're interested in Aristotle and classical thought, you might enjoy reading Polanyi's essay 'Aristotle Discovers the Economy.'

Just read it. Terrific. Answers many questions that were occupying my mind. Confirms the importance of the metaphysical outlook ("nature") to understand economic relationships, and also why economic studies is necessarily a sub-study of politics. Tempts me to get the volume in which the essay was published. Thank you! MA
