I always imagined, since I was a kid, in the middle of those massive destructive hurricanes and storms, and the unfortunate souls that are trapped in them, that all the sea creatures must feel just so tucked in, being in the midst of such destruction, and being in complete safety just below dwelling in their natural habitat
That type of bow is called the "X-Bow" and is a patented design that is supposed to reduce fuel consumption and provide better motion responses in seaways. The M/V ORCA is riding pretty well in what appears to be rough seas...
@Scott2point0 Three red masthead lights indicate that she is constrained by draught, while the condition of restricted in her ability to manoeuvre is shown by three masthead lights: upper and lower being red and the middle one is white. Source: COLREGS Rule 27 (b).
It’s mostly about the weight of the ship vs the weight of the wave. Ships are usually point in the front in order to Pierce the wave thereby mitigating the waves density of force. The WWI Dreadnoughts were so heavy, so slow and technology unknown, ship design was in its Model T stage.
that ugly hull design is actually working flawlessly!. must be more relaxing for the crew to work in those conditions than on a boat with regular hull design
Even if the storm was not that bad, as some complain, the three red lights on the ship indicate that it is unable to maneuver, and the fires on deck probably indicate why.
@Fredrik This comment was meant for another video about a boat that sank. I often have multiple windows open and must have commented in the wrong window. I can see why you said WTF. I am WTF as well. This is not the video I meant to comment on.
The whole concept is making a far more comfortable vessel by eliminating the bow flare which create slamming in heavy seas with unpredictable movement in the ship and noise as a result. The lack of bow flare also means that the ship can maintain a very high "safe speed" with much less risk for structural damage.
Honestly personally myself I never was a fan of bow flare I dont understand why we ever stopped designing bows from the old ocean liner days which effortlessly cut through waves instead of slamming straight into them like a brick wall…
Yes. That's how a traditional hull works. This one, however, uses the buoyancy in a different way so that the ship can maintain greater speeds in greater waves. A conventional bow can take structural damage if you try to run it through waves with high speed. The X-bow dips a little bit more, but moves much more smoothly through the waves, so that it's much more comfortable to be onboard. Have a look at the "Orca passing Skandi Caledonia" In related videos! That shows how well the ship performs.
the three white lights in the mast means i am towing the three red-white-red is unable to manoeuvre the three red-red-red lights means danger, i am in the wrong lane or not able to do anything .
Is it possible for me to use and share this footage on my youtube page? I share footage from all kind of activities on our ocean. Cargo ships in the 1960s till now, oil rigs, fishing vessels, etc. Of course full credit will be given to the owner of the footage. Looking forward to your reply. Kind regards. Cheers!!!!
@@johnyguitar258 image me walking in to the drydock and looking up unto this fucking spaceship :-p at least that's what it felt like.. there was nothing like it, it still looks sexy as hell
@jp4505 I've never been on the open ocean and I don't really want to. Especially after seeing some of the videos tonight. I miss Saskatchewan sometimes!
We were performing a GPS Carrier Phase survey on the Cohasset and Panuke platforms, the first platforms in Canadian Waters. No other rigs or platforms were in Canadian waters at that time. Hibernia came next in 1997. Check this through the Canada Lands Survey Registrar, Plans on file show the platforms were surveyed through the time of the storm. We were on the Vessel the Triumph Sea owned by Secunda and were called away from the platforms to a Mayday by the Eshin (sp) Maru.
in poor visibility like this ocean doesn't look so intimidating it doesn't seem so vast, but in clear weather it doesn't even matter if the sea is calm you really feel all alone
That is not the perfect storm. At least not the one that occured in Late October, 1991. Sorry, I was in the storm and don't recal that rig out there. The only Platforms out there were the Cohassett and Panuke. The first Platforms in Canadian waters.
not sure where you got perfect storm from a ten foot swell im sure she is seaworthy but it would have been nice seeing that big ass bow plowing into some thirty footers but nice click bait i been in some real storms !!!!!
I won’t lie the x bow is good but once waves get too big I can see issues with it deflecting waves up over the superstructure instead of just cutting through them and could act as a ramp in sorts
thats only force 9-10 max on beufort scale, this tug desigden to withstand much greater waves, I`ve been in perfect storm force 12+, wind speed up to 55 m/s 18m waves, that was horrible
the x-bow ships is better than the normal boats, search on '' Testing the Ulstein X bow in VSF (Vehicle Simulator) '' at youtube, and you will see the different of a normal boat and the x-bow in storm ;)

They did the homework on that design looks like it rides out the weather real nice.
Thats crazy dude, the ocean's a scary place. Takes some real guts for the guys that work out there. Nothings on earth's more humbling than the ocean.
She rides that swell beautifully
Looks like you could serve scolding hot tea,it appears so smooth.
Look at how stable the X-bow design is..That's what a nice piece of engineering looks like everyone.

I came for a Fish/whale, stayed for the christmas boat.

Aye, avast ye, she is constrained by draught!
eats the waves effortless
partyloon, I would take ugly and stable over sleek and sunk any day.
Amen to that brother. The sea is a harsh mistress.
Yeah man that kind of ugly would grow on you
damn she's towing a RIG !!! power in that thing must be immense and in that weather too :)
El comportamiento d la proa d ese barco en perfecta en este tipo d situaciones ese barco lo veo como si nada ene sa tormenta genial

Dude I waited the entire video thinking this was about orcas
that ugly hull design is actually working flawlessly!. must be more relaxing for the crew to work in those conditions than on a boat with regular hull design
it's not a brand new design, the first ship with this design is Bourbon Orca, it's the boat you see in this movie, built in 2006 at Ulstein verft..
I was so high I started thinking damn those orcas at sea world will never experience this in their lifetime
very peacefull, thks for sharing
Estos barcos seran la maravilla dl fututo t imaginas los crucero con esta proa en esa tormenta se ve co si nada grnial me gusta😊
Even if the storm was not that bad, as some complain, the three red lights on the ship indicate that it is unable to maneuver, and the fires on deck probably indicate why.
lmao
That didn't help either.

It's the large green boat in the middle of the screen. Large B on the front? Lights on it?
Nice footage! Outstanding weather! (I am serious!)
Just shows how modern designs can be better. Will this be shape of Bering Sea crab boats?
Thx! I'll check it out.
I'm very far from marine things and accidentally here, but just curious about these X-bow new ships - are they good or bad? Thanks.
She looks rides nice. Well mannered.

Bollicks
is it handling anchors? three red lights->unable to manoeuvre
was a towing service?
@BrianWPyke where were you at the storm, in a rig?

good god, that is freaky...i admire anyone who has to deal with this stuff
wow be amzing to see that :D
Is that the SEDCO 714 ??
im proud to say i helped build this ax104 prototype..
fucking love the design

Nice, this vessel is in Trinidad and Tobago now
What company designed this vessel.
dry dock curacao
Ulstein Design.. Xbow
ryan ry yes it is
that was awsome
Awesome 👌
Orca is not just the whale.Orca is called this specific type of sheep.
@Scott2point0 There are no fires on deck. Those are floodlights..........
is the rig on tow>
The thumblehome bow holds the bolt stable
outside norway?
The name of the boat is Orca
@jp4505 I've never been on the open ocean and I don't really want to. Especially after seeing some of the videos tonight. I miss Saskatchewan sometimes!
hi nice vid!
i'll stick to the 722 hull shape, but maybe x bow is the future.
lol. poor wx for a rig move!
this is effective, see how that dosent take direct hits from bigvawes,it like cuts trough the waves, without getting huge bowsplashes, veri nice
Nice video of a very interesting ship!
Btw:
What's the name of this song? Anyone know?
Very good video
Red skys at night salers delight, red skys in morning salors take warning.
I want to work on a ship like that for a year or two!!!
THAT's AWSOME!!! Check out the Smit-Lloyd vids if ya like this stuff.
cool
Até que o mar não estava tão bravo.
I was searching for orcas swimming in storms not a ship named orca
Where's the orca?

burbon orca is the x-bow boat
Its a anchor boat.. It Moves the oil rig anchors :).
whats supposed to be? a tug boat?
those firers are decklights
looks like a paddling canoe bow to me... norwest canoe company
in poor visibility like this ocean doesn't look so intimidating it doesn't seem so vast, but in clear weather it doesn't even matter if the sea is calm you really feel all alone
Norwegian boat construction is the best and safest ;) i think...lol
i dont get it
Good kite flying weather
i dont get it.. so thats y i stay on land
looks impressive!
thats a fuckugly ship though
@Scott2point0 Fires on deck??? lol that's funny.
what the "hull" .... :D :D
Blackfish 😁😁😁😁😁
its not too bad at all
I can't hear a song!
นากลัวมากเลย
Why dont you say anchor handling tug supply in case all the old pirates on you tube dont know what you are talking about
Ej he våre inne i dinne båten. Broren min he våreme å bygge den.
dont change the bow the x bow is slower and all shiping crews want to do is get there faster
i didnt see it :\
Ah, the North Sea.. kinda miss it...
r u sure thats an orca

what kind of boat is that what a weird bow!!
I forgot about this ship... and its hull. maybe someone read the wrong side o fthe design?
It’s called an X bow and it gets rid of bow flare which causes a lot of slamming in heavy seas
dint see an orca
@Scott2point0 fail

This video shows nothing.
Well I’m like 14 years late but I expected to see a killer whale....😔 needless to say I am a lil disappointed 😂
That is one ugly ship.
Ugly vessels...
