I had just finished the MCAT. There were 3 people in the student center at Miami watching it. I had finished the test and rushed to a TV to see Miami behind 30-14, then the comeback. Campus went crazy, at least by Miami standards anyway. Student Center was packed at the end.

I wish i saw this game live. What I enjoyed about these games was watching teams like Miami vs Michigan competing early in the season with both teams highly ranked. And also watching the contrasting styles of football being played. And it wasn't bad at all watching UM playing Michigan at the Big House. Good game!

Im a UM fan no lie but Fsu really traveled during the 80s when they were independent like UM Penn St Notre Dame great times

These guys played so hard. On both sides. I always hated Michigan, but I love their uniforms, lol.

EXTREMELY underrated game! I honestly believe the vulnerabilities Michigan exposed here were a big reason Notre Dame beat Miami later that year. Still, the Hurricanes' comeback here is absolutely remarkable. It's easy to see why they won two national titles in three years (and might have won four straight if not for Penn State and the Fighting Irish).

Thunderbird AGREED...Miami should have probably won 4 straight NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, 1986 to 1989

Agree they had lost so many nfl stars but had 6 or 7 turnovers against notre dame and a terrible call yet still lost by 1 measly point

@@andyraphael Don't forget Miami had a terrible call in their favor as well. Unfortunate that such a classic game was marred by poor officiating both ways. On a different note, 1988 Michigan has to be one of the most heartbreakingly close teams I've ever seen. They were literally 3-4 points from going undefeated and possibly giving Bo a national title. ND and Miami both showed their resilience though against the Wolverines.

Michigan hasn’t played Miami since this game. Schembechler played Miami twice in the ‘80s: 1984 & 1988. Big Blue won in ‘84 22-15. It was JJ’s first year in Coral Gables.

Miami is down 30-14 in the fourth quarter in Ann Arbor and not only wins but also walks off the field without having used any of its second half timeouts. Wow.

Great game but a Brutal loss. The’88 M team came was 3 points away from a mythical NC with both losses coming to ND (finished #1) & MIA (#2) - special teams killed M in both games - Missed FG that would have won the ND game + punt return for TD and failing to recover the onside kick in the Miami game. Gillette was punting & place kicking this year which was a big ask and not something you see anymore.

The Miami game was worse since Gillette missed two easy fg's in the first half. A couple plays cost Michigan the National Championship.

Why did Miami insist on running Leonard Conley between the tackles? He was tiny. I was Gary playing fullback instead of running back. Gary was a natural runner . As a longtime Canes fan, I never understood this.

Evident here why Walsh was never a successful NFL QB. He's the returning starter, on the defending national champions. Acted like it was his first road start. If you have an average to weak arm like that, you have to be accurate. He was scattering throws and his feet were all over the place. This seemed like Miami taking the game, rather than UM giving it away. Needed a few first downs on offense to close it out.
