Finally someone putting the sprinter through a legit offroad course.
Many have asked about our top rack and tire combo, here you go;Top rack is made of aluminum and is custom made specifically for our set up mounted to factory rails. Tire/rim combo is-BFG KO2 265-75-18 on ATX with teflon coated/aluminum wheels.
If you air down those BFG's traction will improve quite a bit.

So good thank you!! I too have a Sprinter 4x4 and have done a bit of off roading. What I have never seen is high speed dirt road driving, I have a background in offroad rally car driving and I find the Sprinter handles great even with stock tires and suspension doing 4 wheel drifts through corners, bouncing off the berms at the edge of some roads, often I leave it in 2WD so the back end can step out and glide around a corner. Sprinter drift!!!
I guess I shouldn't have expected much but this thing makes easy stuff look hard.

Slow steady on the gas pedal will activate the traction control better, it takes a moment for it to route the power (or clamp the brakes on the spinning wheel). Staying on the gas steadily will keep the system in better traction mode :-)
That would be even more capable with diff locks.

Yes, makes no sense the loose wheel to get more power than the ones actually have traction. Useless. Difflock should be possible to add to these if the 4x4 is electrically controlled, as i suppose the newer models are 😉

Lack of diff locks with the AWD system like this seems stupid to me for this very reason, you have to keep the engine revved up or the system re-starts, which makes driving trickier.
@@FRANKI18136 Heavier vehicles they could probably just use some really beefy diff locks.
Efrain Chavez yes would be great but unfortunately nit available for retrofit. Can onlyy be fitted to new vehicles at the Alrad factory in Germany

Very good demo and and unfortunately shows the Sprinter 4x4 limitations. The ABS braking system makes the traction system work by stopping the spinning wheels instead of a system that would direct more power to the wheel with grip - not the ideal solution. You have to really keep your foot into it and let the ABS do it's thing, but even then we have had difficult situations in ours that would be a non-issue in anything with "real" four wheel drive. Also, the maximum power going to the front wheels is 35%. We have not gotten stuck in our 2016 4x4 as of yet (knock on wood), but for the kind of money a 4x4 Sprinter cost Mercedes needs to step up their game, especially with the competition coming out with 4WD/AWD options. It doesn't need diff locks, it brakes the wheel that's spinning. You just need to stay steady on the throttle.

@@carlyndolphin correct. You can see it in the video when one wheel is off the ground. It stops rotating pretty quickly. But the system resets when you let off the gas, which the driver does a few times since he's worried about instability of such a tall vehicle with wheels off the ground! But I guess the new system on the 2019 is even better.

@@seqtrailrider That´s not completely correct. In cause of the same problem I phoned them yesterday if it´s possible as mentioned on their website and in different forums. They confirmed me following: W906 an W907 used 2WD Sprinters with reardrive (!) can be built to 4WD with lockers (rear, front or both) there.
But...if you already have a 4WD built in from MB factory (= modificated for MB by Oberaigner) in your sprinter, I agree with you that they will not do.
Coz Oberaigner and Iglhaut are competitors.
Btw Iglhaut is here in Europe meanwhile the only one who still builts 4WD into used vans.
All others (Oberaigner/MB, Achleitner Austria/Iveco, Dangel France/Citroën, Fiat, Toyota and Peugeot) only more sell new cars with their 4WD.

Philip C they do offer a rear axel difflock on the 2wd so it might be an option for this one.

Nice! Any pointers as to driving it? It seemed that you needed to step on the skinny pedal a bit more to make some tire spins so that the computer would brake those and so improve power to the non slipping wheel...
What's your trick?
Actually just keeping the throttle steady(2500-3000) would do wonders with any traction controlled system. If you notice in the beginning, he would let off right when it would kick in, until he realized it at the end and just let thw computer do its thing. Only issue is brakes usually overheat after prolonged use. Also you dont want too high of an rpm bc as the tc brakes the wheel it puts stress on your diffs as the wheel stops and transfers torque. This system is perfect for getting to a camp site vs recreational offroading when diff locks really come into their own element. Hope that helps!
Although the MB 4X4-ish option is better than a 2WD, this video confirms that a true low-4WD is better and that is what I need for my driving requirements.

Traction control reminds me of how the Discovery 2 works... only better. With a little more articulation, this van would be unstoppable.

At 3:00 in or so in that really lumpy slow speed hill - very impressive - it seemed like you were managing your throttle with the accelerator pedal. Doing low speed stuff I usually put my left foot on the brake on and run the throttle up until it is in the power zone and then manage my speed/motion with the brake pedal. That seems to give more precise control. What do you think?

Really like the rim/wheel and tire combo. Is it the factory suspension set up? I have a stock 2018 4x4 and would like to put same wheels and tires on. Any rubbing issues with that combo for me do you think? Thanks

Great video looking to purchase one of these for my family, how are the maintenance on them often you have to take to shop ? first generation of sprinters have the best reviews not sure about these ones
Frukta5 hey thx for reply on vid. Yes we have had 2 of these and both have been relatively free of maintenance. Our first one was a 2008 and we had a couple of items go bad. But this newer one, 2015, has been a good runner.

Google Sprinter DEF and decide if its worth it. Great vehicle, if they figure out the DEF issues.
Not great by any means. The DEF is no big deal, many other things are.

I didn't see anybody ask already but is this thing lifted or a standard Revel? You say it has 18" tires but I thought 17s were standard. In other words, what mods if any were done to make it more worthy off road? I really don't care for the idea of braking wheels to keep them from spinning. A diff lock is so much simpler and more effective and no lag time before it kicks in during which time you use momentum with these positrac-type systems. It sounds like diff lock is not possible with this vehicle (or any sprinter van) which is a shame. If someone knows otherwise, I'd really like to hear about it.

Great set up. Any upgrades to the factory 4x4? The more I see these new 4x4's the more I'm leaning towards this compared to a truck and camper combo. I'm assuming this is the 144 wheelbase.

Is that really everything a sprinter 4x4 can do? It is the standard all wheel drive without lockers or? Wow... i'm really disappointed. Free spinning wheels all the time. :-( but the van looks very cool. It looks like an offroad monster. I guess a winch is a must have.

Yes, in germany you can find teh comapny Oberaigner. They replace the AWD by a lockable one.
Arb offers them now...available through Agile offroad

DerAnstreicher yes I know, the automatic slips until traction starts on that particular tire. I am sure it would sound quite different if we had a stick shift:)
