I am not nearly as educated as Mr. Vine in this topic, but being born and raised in Hawaii, I think that Guam should embrace their “distance” that they have. It keeps the culture alive. The Hawaiian culture is slowly deteriorating. It’s just sad that Guam is just another barrier of harm to the US wayyyy out in the middle of nowhere. Peace and love to fellow islanders.

Guam? Oh, I thought we were talking about Guantanamo Bay. But we now live in the post-colonial world where more subtle means are used to control strategic locations and protect US interests. Even if the natives become independent in name, the US (or some other neocolonial power) will make sure it stays dependent in practice. Diego Garcia comes to mind.

There are islands with autonomy in the surrounding region. I don't think there will be a real threat of colonization other then the current colonial power.

thanks for this, some time ago I read another one of his books - Island of Shame:The Secret History of the U.S. Military Base on Diego Garcia - and that was when I first got a real sense of US military presence abroad. his work is essential to understanding the magnitude of the problem of American imperialism; like he said, Americans call Guam 'US territory' when it is actually the textbook definition of a colony

Good report Real News. It brings attention to our long standing policy of imperialism in the name of our exceptionalism. I am quite sure there are many Hawaiians and Puerto Ricans who are second class citizens in their own land.Yet my fellow countrymen point their finger toward Crimea? Russian Imperialism and interference? The USA has eclipsed even Great Britain in terms of its world wide ambition. Maybe such insight would cause us to pull in our horns? Or we can pursue the ambitions of the last bloody century with ever more vigor? David Vine lays the case bare enough for those who would promote human decency to discern that the USA has a history of waging offensive war which stretches back long before Syria, Iraq, Libya , and Afghanistan. It was during the Spanish American war that the term White Man's burden was used as justification. My illusions were crushed during the Vietnam War. Our prosperity comes at what cost?

Bruce Campbell Dude, ask Guam if they don’t want us there. We don’t colonize like other countries. Guam’s love is there. We give them jobs, millions in benefits, American businesses, and protection. They would rather be a state break from the US.

Guåhan, remains a colony of the U.S. and has repeatedly ignored the decision of the U.N. regarding respecting and granting Guåhan, and it's rightful people, self determination. The sentiment of remaining under colonial rule, and the choice of political determination, is approaching. Educational literature, town hall discussions, media coverage, on the basic choices being proposed, are in place and ongoing. The choices offered, are Self Determination, Independence, & Statehood. It is my dream and desire, to have the archipelago of the Marianas Islands, United under one Commonwealth, we were put into this world to live life, not colonial rule.

thank you for this report/history lesson Real News! David Vine looks familiar I wonder if Abby Martin or John Pilger has interviewed him or if he's corresponded with Media Lens or Media Lens has posted stuff from him on their facebook page. anywho Guam, American Samoa, The Marshall Islands, and other territorories controlled by the US, or UK are worthy of Abby Martin to do an excellent documentary for the Empire Files or John Pilger (check out his film the Coming War on china and stealing a nation). Free Guam, Puerto Rico, Marshall Islands, and all occupied territories and end colonialism on them and give land rights and nationhood back to the Native Americans, Hawaiians, Alaskans, First Nation Canadians, Maoris and the Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islanders.

Did I hear right--4:50-4:54--Did David say that "Washington D.C" is one of those territories in a "colonial relationship with the USA? Is the good professor saying that Washington DC is NOT the capital of the USA?

    • @felixfonalledas893

Washington,District of Columbia is indeed the capital of United States. Sadly it’s people are treated as second class citizens just as the people of the five regular U.S. territories. It’s actually a Federal territory of United States. The majority of its inhabitants (86 Percent) support statehood for D.C. They have been struggling for it,knowing that if their homeland becomes a state they will start being treated as first class citizens as the 50 present U.S. states. I personally favor statehood for the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. I believe that they should become the 51st and 52nd U.S. states.

Nah guam was originally a spanish territory together with the philippines and puerto rico and this island was used to be ruled spanish colonial government based in manila due spanish aamerican war this island was sold to american for the price of 20 million dollars because the spaniards doesn't want to put their empire into shame by surrendering to the imdians of the island so in treaty of paris they sold intead they sold the island to americans in order to use this as a base due to their manifest destiny policy

I was on Guam from '86-'88. During that year and a half I never met one Guamanian that expressed dissatisfaction at me being there from the mainland. Guam might be different in status from a state, like California, but the difference is on paper. US bases overseas are needed and contribute vast sums of money to the local economies. This man would be the first talking head to criticize "lack of foresight and preparedness by NOT having bases abroad."

I am all for Guam, but comparing Cuba to Guam is not accurate. You forge t e Cubans today are fleeing their previous government. After America left. Be careful what you wish for. This island is thee most resilient of all the colonies in my opinion. They can do it, and achieve what they ask but it will take time.

Good on ya'...but amazing the speaker could ramble through almost 14 minutes of video and avoid the clearly applicable term of 'imperialism'.... US bases are part of the projection of American imperial power and strategy. Why not just spit it out instead of couching the language in euphemisms like 'spear' and so forth. Will never understand these milquetoast presentations.
