Epic Review: Prym Ergonomic Circular Needles
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 сер 2024
- I try out the most unusual needle I've ever seen: the Prym Ergonomic Needle featuring a "hook" tip and steel cable similar to the Chiaogoo Circulars. Is there finally an economical alternative to Chiaogoo, or does Prym have a fatal flaw?

Thank you for trying them out for us. I had higher hopes as well but the join is a big deal for me too. I think it would be cool to see a metal needle with the same kind of tip and a chaiogoo cable and join.
That would be interesting. Although I wonder if expensive. I think it would be easier to mold plastic into that shape. Although I could be wrong.
@@CarrieCraftGeek I didn't think of that but it would be easier to make in plastic. I wonder now how much harder it would be to machine a bulb tiped metal needle. Probably too expensive to do, but I still wonder.
Thank-you for this review. I have been intrigued by these needles, but have not tried a pair myself. I would have the same issue with them; if the join is not good, they won’t work for me.
I liked their dpns, but honestly, I hate magic loop and now want to try these in circs.
Yes if you don’t care about magic loop or two circs I think they would be okay. Now I want to try the DPNs. I have some Bryspun I always quite liked.
@@CarrieCraftGeek Bryspun dpns really are my favorites. Such good needles. I like their circs, too, so I think these might be worth a try.
Thanks for the comprehensive review. I bought the US 6 in 2020 from Prym. For this smaller size, the join is the same plastic (and white color) as the rest of the needle and it lacks the triangular shape. I think their website had indicated at the time that the smaller sizes lack the triangle shape. I knitted 1 shawl with it and the marking of the size has faded from the friction of my yarn (a cotton/acrylic blend). I have a set of US 7 DPNs that have the triangular shape but I can't remember if I tried them out on a hat yet or not..LOL
Thank you for your review and the bloppers 😄
Thanks for the review. I have no problem with joins in magic loop mainly because my knitting is rather loose. Maybe thar’s the point.
After seeing a review by Arne and Carlos about this needle I ordered one for myself. I have the join problem with every circular needle I own. Some are worse than others. I find the interchangeable sets tend to be especially difficult.
Love, love and love the feel of them. Have always used addi circulars, but you are right about the join. These work wonderfully for simple knitting. Have ordered some double pointers for socks. You find straight cotton yarn is to grippy on these, but although acrylic fuzzy yarns slide well, they tend to snag horribly on the join when doing magic loop. Having said that, all circular needles seem to do that for me, so maybe a change in technique is needed. Disappointed to read that the numbers rub off after a while - and breakage 🤨
I really like the Prym ergonomic double points, just wish they came in 5 or 6 inch length - at least I haven't found them in the shorter lengths.
As for the circular I have an in the round sweater pattern I want to work. I think that might be good with the Prym because there's so much I like about them.
With the tightened stitches in magic loop, you could try traveling magic loop.
Essentially, you keep around 4 stitches of the stitches you just worked on the right needle. So the active stitch can't be stolen from in that way, and you don't start with an empty needle.
(My explanation is pretty rough, sorry, but there are great tutorials on UA-cam)
I'm a big fan of traveling loop and have a tutorial on it 😀 However, it has limitations and can't be used for any circumference. For projects like hats I often start with traveling loop and then switch to magic loop when the circumference gets too small.
I've got fairly similar tastes to you, I think, in needles, other than me tending toward slightly slower materials, so I was on board until you mentioned the join. I still might try their DPNs.
Wonderful and thorough review, thank you! I'm going to risk it with these because the join on my bamboo circulars is snagging my stitches and there aren't any other circular options at my local craft store. I'm doing stockinette in the round with no magic loop so we will see. Fingers crossed! 🤞💜🧶
I hope they work. I do suspect that if you're filling the whole needle the join isn't such a issue. And I really do like the tips, so much I'm trying out the DPN's.
They're really made for Norwegian style knitting. Check out Carlos and Arne's tutorial.
Hmm. I can knit with that style, I'll have to try them out and see if I notice a difference.
Thanks for the review! Thick joins are definitely a no for me. I was gifted a pair of the Prym flexible cable needles, which have the same bulb tip. It's another "close but no cigar" design because the flexible part is covered in rubber. It reminds me of those old flexible Gumby toys. Because the yarn sticks to the rubber, they aren't great for knitting cables. However, I sometimes wrap one around my wrist like a bracelet and keep it handy for dropped stitch emergencies, especially when working brioche.
Ohhh good to know! I have been so curious about those cable needles. I’ve always leaned toward the fish hook style cable needles which are fantastic for brioche. But, the best I’ve been able to keep it handy is hanging it from my bra. A bracelet option would be more discrete. 😂
Try the stick prym needles or the double end ones
I have a set if DPN which I like but wished they came in 5 inch lengths. I don't do straights. Just a personal preference.
I personally own these needles I do love them but the problems I find with these are the numbers on the needles will rub off with a lot of use and with the small size they can brake with a lot of use.
I find most of my needles the numbers run off over time. It’s annoying especially when I’m trying to sort out my Addi lace tops versus the basics. 😅
Good to know about the smaller sizes.
