    I am a very diligent knitter, so I usually do things as I am supposed to do, BUT when I don't, I fail spectacularly! Very recently I casted on without reading the very important note about the size. It was a cabled sock and the designer was advising to cast on more stitches than one usually would, to take into account the fact that the fabric wouldn't stretch as much as if it was stockinette. I obtained a thick, dense cylinder of wool that couldn't fit a toddler's foot. I also recently had to convince myself to follow instructions that were making no sense UNTILL they indeed made sense knitting the piece. And: I can't stress enough the importance of tracking. One may think that they would remember: no, honey, you won't. On a final note, I can understand why you don't want to bind off your MIL scarf. I send internet stranger's hugs :)

    Wow, I’ve knit like this for years, my mom taught me when I was a teenager (or younger) and I’m almost 60, and I never knew this was what it was called. I always heard people say you pick or throw , but I didn’t throw like English knitting and thought “well that’s not quite what I do”. Thanks for finally clearing it up.

    Lockable plastic stitch markers are in with my crochet , the locking "Bulb" markers fit up to my 7mm (just past 10.5 US) which is rare I use. So they go from socks to sweaters. Lobster claw dangly markers given to me , they mean well ....... ended up as pretty zipper pulls , some people use them on their crochet , the plastic locking ones do just fine , keeps things simple. I don't own any commercial sock blockers like your's, looked at them before but most of them serve no purpose except for photographing . How ever !!!, I do like stealing some of my husbands electrical plastic coated wire to form a semblance of a sock , to slip socks on . I make up what I need, nothing stretched , just has to be close, Not all socks are the same size , can't imagine buying multiples or trying to cover different sizes and for me it is all about washing and air drying purpose. I wash a bunch at a time , form a hook at the top and hang them up all along the shower curtain rod, find air flows through them and they dry faster vs having wet socks laid out. Yarn holders/ bowl....... for me bags that probably were never meant to hold yarn, at one time , some stores put your purchases in a plastic bag with a nice rope like cord cinched . (OMG how old is this bag,) Anything that keeps dust dirt etc off , stops it rolling , while I knit from it, without being snagged by a zipper is good. The box idea is a great one , stackable ! Maybe I could go from a bag lady to a box lady. 😜

    I do this but I separate the strands so that I only double up half the strands and thus I don’t have a thickened join. It means I have to weave in the unused strands at the back.

    As part of reading through the pattern, especially in sweaters, I look for sections of shaping followed by the dreaded "reverse shaping for the [other] side". If I know ahead of time, I can make the needed notes so my knitting flows smoothly and I'm not stopping to make notes/write out the reverse when I'm in knitting mode. Lol I've been caught by this one more than a few times. Enough that I now check over any pattern for it. I don't see it as often but the old "AT THE SAME TIME,.." used to sneak up on me and cause (at minimum) some tinking. I remember that I went through and highlighted those words on a bunch of printed patterns from the 60s-80s I used to have.

    I watched Hazel Tindall videos over and over and have adopted that Shetland Island way of holding the needle and yarn. I’ve mastered various styles over the years - continental, Irish lever style ( Stephanie Pearl McPhee) but all those other styles ended up causing hand and wrist pain. The Shetland flicking style is the best for me. I’ve even taken up crochet and use the flicking style with crochet . Again I find there’s less twisting involved so less hand and arm pain.

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek 11 днів тому

      Yeah it's always a tricky spot between the heel stitches and the instep stitches. And it's more knitting physics that it happens than knitters doing anything wrong. With short row heels of any kind I've always found gaps less of a problem than with flap and gusset. But, still happens sometimes. I personally don't worry about it because I can close the holes during finishing.

    I just finished watching Cat’s video. I noticed she slips the first stitch on every knit and purl row . In this video you only slipped on the first purl row and the first knit row. Is there a reason for nit continuing to slip the first stitch as you progress through the heel?

    To all those who don't want to give up their English knitting... English (or Lever knitting) where you throw the stitch creates greater relaxation and better health outcomes. The research was done by physiotherapist Betsan Corkhill in 2014. You can read about it in her book "Knit for Health and Wellness."

    I really wanted to like and use the pencil hold of the right needle. Then I tried to use this hold on a project in progress that is knit in the round in which I have 8" of yoke fabric. That much fabric underneath my thumb takes away my tactile senses with the yarn and the building of the fabric. I also can't feel the needle with the pencil hold and I can't get the action of the "pencil" sitting in the crook of my thumb with all the fabric. It was a real disappointment to not have the positive outcome I had hoped. I'm a continental knitter learning English knitting and feel very comfortable with tensioning my yarn through my fingers and taking my hand off the needle to throw or cast the yarn over my working needle. I guess that will be good enough for now. Perhaps a technique to revisit another time.

    Great recommendations. I would add Purl Soho yarns when PS is running a big sale. Yes, they are more expensive than the yarns you recommend but they are gorgeous. Their Linen Quill (439 yds in 100 g hanks) is amazing to work with and comes in more than 50 colors. It's a fingering weight so goes a very long way. Also their Good Wool is great. It's a sport weight and the hank (383 yds in 100g) also comes in lots of colors. These are both pricier than the yarns you mentioned, but they are lovely and not as expensive as many yarns that don't compare in quality.

    After more than 40 years of knitting, and knitting pretty fast, I now have to knit slower and that's ok. I found that I knit myself right into elbow surgery. It really was only part of the problem, but still... The problem is that I get rammy and make hard, jerky movements when I go fast and that can be hard on joints / tendons, etc. If worried about knitting faster is a problem, try to imagine not being able to knit normally for 12 weeks. That was me. I could only knit by using straight needles and holding the one that would normally be in my right hand, in the crease of my knee while it was bent, or holding it inside my arm brace, since I wasn't allowed to do fine motor movements for several months after having that elbow repaired. Also sort of back to one of my unpopular opinions, we are involved in a craft where we are literally making the fabric (sometimes making the yarn as well). I don't think speed is at the core of the craft. I like to go fast. I like to get more knitting done. But I do see the irony of wanting to make the projects quickly, while choosing to make it in a way that requires that you literally make the fabric, LOL. I think that whatever style of knitting is fine. I have tried many, many styles and for me, it depends on the project. It also depends on what I've been doing all day. I find that continental is easier when I'm doing lace or sock knitting, while I find that it's much easier on my body to knit English style with heavier yarns. I can totally see how lever knitting would be very fast. I just can't seem to wrap my head around the purl motion. Then again, I have a weird purl style anyway. But my tension is identical whether knit or purl when I'm continental and just as quick. So I default to that style when purling is required. LOVE CHARTS! Love them for both knit & crochet, also tatting. Give me a starting stitch count, a gauge suggestion, and a chart and I'm good to go. Definitely not a fan of the 20 page patterns that are popular nowadays, preferring the "under 4 pages" patterns of the past. 🙂 Have a great day & take care!

    Hi. I learned to knit lever style when I was little. In recent years I tried several times to use Continental but I just can't get on with it, especially when it comes to ribbing. My knitting was okay but then I learrned underarm lever style a couple of years ago and it literally changed my knitting world. My knitting became faster, much neater and it's much more comfortable for me, especially with my arthritis. I still try to practice Continental from time to time but underarm is my go to style now. Thank you for sharing this video.

    What's worst about lace knitting is you can't drop stitches off like you would do when you make a mistake in a stockinette and just ladder up. You have to frog the entire thing till the mistake and redo it again but it's worth the pain because the outcome is rewarding.

If yarn makes the maker happy it's a fine yarn for what they are doing. 2) Using bulky, super bulky, jumbo yarn "because it's faster". You'all, we are engaging in an art/craft where we are literally making fabric. I'm not sure faster is the point. If you use it because you like it, because you think it works best for your project, or pretty much anything except 'because it's faster' is cool with me. I'm also not opposed to going fast. It just winds me up to use a certain yarn just because it might go faster. Of course, I'm a person that doesn't mind ripping back and remaking because then I just get to spend more time with that yarn, doing an activity that I love. So maybe I'm the odd ball. I feel like choosing a yarn because it's comfortable to use, comfortable to wear, well suited to the project or use, are all so much more important than the size of the yarn. Maybe I'm jealous.....I struggle with anything larger than a #4 worsted weight due to arthritis and weight of project hanging off needles, weight of the needles themselves, etc. Nope.....that's not it. I just don't get the because it's faster thought. 3) I don't understand yarn shaming for stash size. That's not anyone's concern as long as it doesn't directly impact them. Everyone has a different comfort level with the amount of supplies and different available budget. If you are good with what you have, then great! This also goes to people getting upset when someone gets to a sale before them and buys all the yarn of a certain color. Again, nobody's business why someone needs/wants all of that yarn, and last I checked, if you really wanted/needed it, then why wait until it's on clearance, as well as not make getting to the clearance sale a priority. Hey, early bird gets the worm, all the worms if they want, LOL I have more, but you don't need a novel here. Really have enjoyed your videos. Found you because of your video that included the hat-top-sock-heel tutorial. Wonderful & Thank you.

      So happy to hear you are enjoying the channel. And agree size of someone else's stash or what's in it, is none of my business. I'll happily share my reasons for my choices but I'm not judging others by and large.

    How do you measure the length of your stocking when the heel is done at the end?

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek Місяць тому

      I measure the foot and cuff separately. So I measure from the back of the heel to the end of the foot then from the same spot of the heel to the top of the cuff.

    Thanks for the encouragement about trying challenging patterns! Some designers are so aggressive about pattern difficulty that they come off as discouraging which I find bizarre.

    Finally! Someone who holds the right needle the same way I do. I was getting to think I was the only person who did it this way, although I tension the yarn differently. It really annoys me that people sneer at English style saying it’s slow. I usually direct them to the UA-cam video of Hazel Tindall, a Shetland knitter, who powers through a row of knitting in what seems to be a blink of the eye

    Although a great video, I will say that the background music is quite a distraction and annoyance and serves no purpose that I can see. Sorry if I sound gruff but feel you should know.
