I really liked to make custom maps back in the day, and I remember there was a short PDF written by the developers as a guide for using "world builder" (the generic tool for making maps for Generals and ZH). At the end of the PDF, there was a FAQ section and one of the questions was "How do I create a dam?" and the developers' answer was something like: "Simply don't. It took us a lot effort and hundreds of line of coding to make those dams in the campaign" xD
I just notice how turrets of the Chinese battlemaster (let's not kid ourselves, those are soviet tanks) literally gets catapulted into air when destroyed. This aged so well.
One interesting difference between the GLA campaigns in Generals and Generals ZH is that they are depicted much more evilly in Generals (compared with ZH). You destroy dams, kill civilians to steal UN supplies, deliberately take revenge by using toxic weapons on civilians (cut GLA mission), and destroy and loot buildings to gain cash. In ZH, GLA are more humane. They are depicted as a faction that are more focused on fighting the imperialist powers, not innocent civilians. For comparison, the last GLA mission in Generals is about using a toxic warhead on a city, while the first USA mission in ZH is about the GLA targeting a military base. I don't know if this shift was intentional or not though (edits: typos)
It is. In story sense (imo) because of the faction restructuring after their defeat. Like when you are trying to find the US air craft carrier, Kanwar said to not attacking the dock workers.
@@LazyDarkLorddude i believe its because a change in leadership i mean in zero hour the gla have generals which dr. Thrax might be the one leading the gla in the first campaign and in zero which deathstrike took leadership to unite the GLA forces to kick the americans out in europe
my fan theory is that the original gla general died in the American campaign, the new zero hour generals emerged to take charge and they're... slightly nicer
It’s one of the only games actually depicting the War on Terror while it was happening, exaggerated in many forms but not really “parody”. No major games have come out recently of ISIS, Boko Haram, or the US defeat on Afghanistan. Just like there are barely any on Vietnam.
@@carloscampo9119 Wikipedia has a list of 85 games set in Vietnam, they're not exactly uncommon. There was a fad for them for a while when you got the _Vietcong_ series and _Battlefield Vietnam_ . Plenty of games set in Afghanistan, too.
Not sure what videogames you're playing, a cursory look at Wikipedia finds me over 80 titles set in the Vietnam War and there's even more set during the War on Terror.

The devs absolutely were very proud of what they did with the dams.
They were so proud, each faction had to destroy one of each in their campaigns lol

@@unknown0soldier If we had the code on hand, I assume it would be relatively easy to replicate it for other dams.
@@Makem12 Maybe, but then again, the majority of people who used world builder were most probably enthusiasts, not dedicated programmers
@@unknown0soldier used to play on a few custom maps, which had a dam, that would change the layout of the map when destroyed.
despite the GLA being horrible terrorists I really think they have the best campaign, goddamn I love those little tanks.
GLA engineering in the pinnacle of imagination.
You gotta love it when you get to destroy an M1 Abrams (Crusader) with an old Italian L6/40 (Scorpion) from WW2

USSR licensed those models to many countries, including China.
I love how i keep being recommended Generals content in 2025 all of a sudden, a glorious start to the year.
"AK 47 for everyone."

They even gave the workers shoes in ZH, how nice of them!
@@anotherbacklog lol I can't remember this one, the shoe upgrade was introduced in ZH?
“Fight on the ground, like men!”
My favorite line of the entire game.
EA made a war on terror game and thought we wouldn't remember
War Of Terror On Islam And Muslims*
And just like real life, the GLA ended up killing way more civilians than the ”imperialist powers” combined

Defending in this mission is quite hard at the beggining
