    Starting in 2008 I would spend ten hours a day studying Taiji and Bagua. I would read and watch video for 5 hours and then practice for 5 hours. In 1993 I began practicing Silat and Escrima. I started turning all my weapon techniques into Taiji and Bagua by following the principles. My specialty is double sword. Right now I am drink strong herbal teas and taking no food. I appreciate what the Chinese Culture did for me!

    An interesting trivia I just found:
    Apparently the crew of "Kung Fu Panda 2" visited this Taiji master, filmed him doing Taiji, and applied the moves into the animation. Hence master Liu is sometimes called "Po's real shifu" :)

      Thanks for this trivia. I sometimes wondered if i was just projecting 'magical thinking ' on some of those Panda movies, thus seeing styles that could not be in a children's movie .

    As a MMA practitioner, I love practicing Tai Chi and other Kung fu styles - they’re very good for welfare and there are some excellent techniques in there - the issue is that most martial arts schools in China were stripped of effective training methods during the Chinese revolution- if you’re not free sparring you will not be able to apply your skill - Tai Chi works pretty well as a grappling style but I only recognised this after doing BJJ and Greco-Roman wrestling and seeing a similarity in techniques. I learn beautiful forms in Tai Chi classes but I only learnt how to use them when I got on the mat and had a 120kg man try his hardest to take me down and submit me.

    • @StarSpawn06
      @StarSpawn06 4 роки тому +19

      In the case of certain "TaiJi" that you see out there, lack of free sparring is only a fraction of the problem.
      The essence of TaiJi is in:
      1. adapting to (rather than trying to overpower) external force,
      2. developing internal/well-centred power, and
      3. being a tool for embodying the Daoist way of life, which happens to include, but is not limited to, how one handles violence.
      Unfortunately, many a time, what is advertised as "TaiJi" forgets one or more of those goals.
      They're stuck on the forms/techniques and neglect the conditioning to develop that adaptive & internal power and calm, mindful temperament. And so they fail. :|
      For an example of a TaiJi master whom I believe has brought out the full potential of TaiJi, search for Adam Mizner on UA-cam.
      Some of his demonstrations/spars appear unbelievable. That's because, as he himself would explain, the power is internal.
      Also, he's an accomplished buddhist meditator, which clearly contributes to his exceptional mindfulness.
      It's like watching a tight-rope walker performance. It looks unbelievable to us, because it cannot be explained by any trick/technique/form.
      Rather, it's an attainment based on years of diligent conditioning and mindfulness, following certain principles.
      There's a saying:太极十年不上身 (”TaiJi cannot possess your body within 10 years"),
      expressing how long it takes to deeply grasp TaiJi.

      Don't you guys have ever heard about "hand-pushing exercise (推手)"?

    • @StarSpawn06
      @StarSpawn06 4 роки тому +7

      @@LaifuLama push-hands itself is an exercise, not free sparring. However, it's possible to apply the principles trained in push-hands to the whole body during a situation such as a fight (in fact, I reckon that was the actual goal when the exercise was invented). There's also branches of Taiji that don't have formalised push-hands (e.g. Youlong Taiji / 犹龙太极) but train the principles in their own ways :)

    傳統武術已不再像早期先民那般是生死搏鬥的技藝,現代習武者學習傳統武術的精神是整合身心的平衡。若是追求對抗,那不要找傳統武術,因為傳統武術殺傷力大的招數都是速效非死既傷的撮眼踢檔抓喉打要害。這在擂台上套規則的對抗是不相合的環境。所以還是各走各的道才對。不需要放在一起比。

      Of course, there are some things in Tai chi that are just too far out there to use in a real fight. However, there are some movements, if timed properly or modified, they can work.
      It's all about adaptability.
      In closing, some say Aikido doesn't work. Well, I used an aspect of and took a disruptive student to the ground and completely immobilized him.
      Adaptability.

    Lol idk why people mention fighting when talking about tai chi. This video had nothing to do with combat. Ur just a bunch of mma fanboys with nothing else better to do. I know this because if you really hate tai chi you wouldn't have searched for this video. And if it was somehow in your recommended you wouldn't have clicked on it. Nothing else better to do? Also no one who knows tai chi will use it in combat. If you bother mentioning that dude who fought Xu Xiaodong, yeah he was bs and doesn't represent tai chi because it was so obvious he was fake. Tai Chi is an exercise, not really suited for modern day combat. Yes I admit that. Please keep ur comments to urself because trust me a real person who knows tai chi can very well admit they won't win in a fight unless they have other martial arts experience. Stop disrespecting a culture and an art that has been around for thousands of years.

    • @jamiefong5350
      @jamiefong5350 4 роки тому +1

      @GreenAndMeat paw no one claims tai chi is effective. At least not anymore. If they do they are fake. Tai Chi isn't meant for modern day combat. Those people don't represent tai chi. It isn't fair to ridicule and give a bad name to an art that is very beneficial to your health. Chi isn't a magical force that can knock someone out without touching them. It is energy flowing throughout your body. They flow through your meridians. Now whether or not you believe in that is up to you but chi isn't a weapon. It was portrayed that way in kung fu panda 3 so now people believe that tai chi has to do with the kung fu panda chi. It isn't. Tai chi, the chi word is not accurate. It is not the same word as chi chi in chinese. So taiji is the pinyin for tai chi. Chi chi the energy is qi in pinyin. So they are different words. People in the west think chi as if it is magic which it isn't. People claiming it is are misrepresenting tai chi and that causes some people to avoid it, thinking it is bs. It isn't and tai chi is very good for your health. It is a good thing if you are old as well because it doesn't require as much physical exertion. Don't be fooled by idiots

    • @goktimusprime
      @goktimusprime 4 роки тому +2

      @NoobMeister I claim that Tai Chi is effective in a fight. I practise Tai Chi and I've sparred with fighters from Kung Fu (various styles both Northern and Southern), Muay Thai, Brazilian Jujutsu, Wrestling, Okinawan Karate, Japanese Karate, Taekwondo, Judo etc. I love cross training with people who do other arts, because in a real fight we're highly unlikely to be attacked by someone who does our exact same style! Might as well get used to different styles.
      The problem with Tai Chi is that most people don't TEACH it properly, and thus they can't fight with it. The problem isn't with Tai Chi but the way it's taught. Tai Chi teaching, on the whole, is rubbish.
      Practically everyone in China learns English. It's a compulsory subject in school. And yet the majority of the population don't speak English. Does that make English a useless language that cannot be used for communication? Of course not. We're using it right now. The problem lies in the way that English is taught in China - i.e. not well. Many English teachers in China do not teach students how to practically apply English (i.e. sustained competent communication). Students can spend years studying vocabulary and grammar and get great results in English exams, but cannot even hold a sustained communication with an Anglophone. They don't know how to USE English.
      This is what Tai Chi is like in many places. People practise Tai Chi movements endlessly but they have no idea what the moves mean or how to USE them. Any martial art is useless if students aren't taught to use it.
      Also, principle matters more than technique. If you understand the principles of a fight then you can adapt your techniques to new and unfamiliar situations.
      e.g. using Tai Chi to counter a rear-naked choke. Now we never practise rear-naked chokes in Tai Chi, so if you only train in techniques then no, you probably can't use Tai Chi to counter a rear-naked choke. But if you train in principles then you can. The last time I had someone do a rear-naked choke on me, I used Snake Creeps Down and managed to throw my opponent off of me. We repeated this several times (to eliminate chance/fluke) and each time I was successful.
      The only down side to cross training with other styles is, unless they offer you free lessons, it gets really expensive. :p

    I have 26 years experience training with some of Chinas recognised top experts and can wholeheartedly say this guy is a complete fraud but asides from knowing that by looking at his movements and the hollywood style production with the models dancing posing as genuine taiji students, it should be apparent to anyone reading lines like "taoism believes there are 3 yin and 3 yang meridians in the 10 fingertips connected to our organs. When we practice the surge of qi it will a form of stretching and health massage for the internal organs. Hence it is not available in other forms of Taiji"
    The guy is trying to not only sell something that is not genuine but it saying it contains something that other genuine styles of taiji dont have. If thats not bad enough the hilarious thing is the example he gives as if to suggest there is not stretching and massage of internal organs through other styles of Taiji! I've met plenty of guys like this over the years and as Mike Sigman says "walk away with your wallet facing the wall". Don't say you weren't warned people.

    你冇嘢呀嘛,又拍條笑片出嚟畀人笑,自我陶醉扮世外高人,真是中了武俠小說和武俠電影的毒太深,無得救啦,都要讚一下,畀咁多人笑都要拍片但是好有電影感,他面不改容不知羞恥,真是強國的國粹!😔👍

      Ernest is totally right.
      Most Tai chi is taught neutered... intentionally so
      True Tai chi is actually related to baji Quan, Shaolin, and shuijiao
