All the apps and processes reboot every time the car is turned on, which causes a delay in initialization. If they install a small USB power bank and configure it to enter hibernation mode instead of shutting off completely, it might speed up the startup process. Think of it like a computer-tablets are essentially small computers. RAM is static as long as it has power, but if the power is cut, the memory is erased. I'll try this setup when my device arrives!
Great vid, i have android auto they were having a resolution issue with it. I gave up. I decided to add an AT&T sim card and use the apps on the screen its a game changer i love it. Plus my son loves watching Netflix on the way to school. Sim card was the answer for me.
Awesome video, thanks again for sharing the info. On a side note, how do you get the weather app to display info upon startup? Every time I start mine, it says no info until I physically open the app.
I'd love to, but I am getting attacked from group members, despite @haris_mani (Instagram) coming forward confirming he shared the antenna mod with me in July (before the group was started). I really don't want the drama from what appears to be a giant misunderstanding based on an assumption. I'd be discouraged if every learning I share is going to be scrutinized on the origin of an idea. Aucar reached out to me on May 28th, 2024 to start this project. I have a couple dozen emails with Eric at Aucar outlining the first one they installed before coming to market. I had at least 6 weeks of information and research going into this. Plus I have performed dozens of technical mods to my vehicles. I received my screen July 19th, 2024. Mohammad Haris Sharif (@haris_mania) contacted me July 27th with the GPS tap strategy. Then after Mitch made a post on August 17th showing the inexpensive cables he used, I picked up similar ones. I was having trouble finding a solution in Canada. Sites like camerasource.com just didn't have exactly what I was looking for (especially shipping-wise to Canada). It didn't occur to me to check Amazon. I do have experience with coaxial cable and their uses for antennas and cameras in vehicles. The share from @haris_mania had me planning this install. I wonder how many folks that are upset with me know I relocated my cargo camera into a custom sport bar on my AT4? I know I wasn't the first to relocate a camera on a newer truck. But I was the first to do it on a prototype sport bar. I am not looking for credit, but the GPS tap was happening whether I found Mitch's cable selection, or not. My sincerest apologies to Mitch for not giving a shout out in the video that the cables he posted about were the ones I was able to find in Canada (at least similar enough). The best I can do now is explain my side of a one-sided assumption. Sorry for the long-winded response, but I feel I should stick up for myself as well.
Hey Don, how's it going? My Aucar is being shipped, can't wait to get it. About the GPS taps you installed, are they specifically for your GMC or is it for all? I have a 2019 Silverado LT Trailboss. Thanks for your time and your videos. Dan.
Mitch Moen is a a great support for the Facebook group. I knew about the tap option early on from Mohammad Haris Sharif chatting on Instagram (before I discovered the FB group) but Mitch Moen's FB post definitely pointed me to the affordable accessories. I am glad there are people that can share their learnings and experiences with these things.
I tried something similar in my 2022 2500. Since I have a truck I lose the XM signal often. I purchased a XM antenna and splitter so I could put the antenna on the front of the hood. But I keep getting a warning that says the antenna is not connected. Ugh!
Hi don...videos are awesome...i have a question i recently installed the aucar 15" however i cant get a stable connection to carplay via wireless nor thru usb...any recommendations...i cleared the zlink cache...still wont get a stable connection.
Apparently another update is being released soon. The CarPlay connection issue is still prominent. I hope the update has something for the CarPlay die hards.
When the screen is pulled out it is a 6” run under the vent tube. I can almost reach my hand in the cavity to grab the wire while feeding it up from below. The excess cable is tucked behind the plastics. I am sorry. Filming behind the dash is incredibly difficult when by myself.
I was curious, looks like we have the same one, I installed mine, but the audio won’t play through CarPlay, I have to connect through trucks original Bluetooth in the background, but when the unit came it didn’t have any literature and can’t seem to find it, did ya ever experience that?
You can’t use the factory USB ports for updates as they are only connected to the factory infotainment system. The add on screen upgrade comes with two USB cables that I ran into the glove box (no cutting). This was shared in a prior video for this product.
Thanks for the reply your a big help. I have already ordered the new screen. I have not watched all your videos yet pertaining to this mod but I’m working on it.
Don I need help. What’s an alternative to the “Superbat Fakra Splitter Cable 60cm, Fakra Cable Male to Female RG174 Coaxial Cable Y Type Splitter for Car Stereo GPS Antenna Extension Cable Aerial Aftermarket Stereo” it says it can’t be shipped to my house? I live in Dallas TX
No difference in the cables. I just listed the two different Amazon websites because of shipping and customs/duties that can make it inconvenient to shop online.
When you disconnected the unit to plug in the adapter, did you take apart the entire console like you did taking out the oem unit or just the top half enough to get into the back of the unit? Sorry for such a long question..
Is there any way to retain the factory USB/USB-C ports that are in the dash and connect them to the new system, or are you forced to use the ones that are included with the system to communicate updates?
The stock USB A and C plugs are not able to rerouted to the new screen. Therefore you need utilize the extra USB A cables for direct connections to the new screen. Some people have purchased adapters to strategically integrate the new plugs into various areas for a factory look. But they still have the factory USB plugs as well.
A guy told me that these cables should have a diode because otherwise there would be problems with the screen, is that true ? I already ordered the cable and only then did they tell me about the diode and I was scared to mount it on the screen
An active GPS antenna, like antennas some people may still use on their homes use diodes for protection. I have never heard of someone adding one for this type of application.
Couldnt find the links to find these cables. Sorry to ask.. but could you shoot me the links by chance? I want to get the right ones. Please and thank you!
I put them in the video description. Here are the US links. At the time the 3ft extension was sold out, it may be back in stock now. Either way they all work: GPS Tap Parts (US): Extension Cable (10ft): amzn.to/3ZrS7sG *** 3ft version is long enough too *** Male to Female Splitter (Y cable): amzn.to/3Tuk4w8
My car play volume is extremely low. The music, phone calls and the GPS volume can barely be heard but when I switch to the factory radio screen the volume is normal. What could be the cause of that?
The US extension cable is female to female? I live in Florida, I'm waiting for my screen but I already ordered the extension and it was female to male.
Are you doing this all Bluetooth? Does it make a difference if you plug it in? I always plug my phone into the truck. I have a 2021 silverado and I've been eyeing this system since I saw your video.
All bluetooth. This screen is NOT wired CarPlay compatible. I could plug it in to the factory USB port, but then CarPlay wouldn’t use the full 15.6” screen. Instead I’d have to view it in a reduced form in the ‘console’ view. Like all the other factory apps The truck cane with.
@Donslife although I choose nit to use carplay, I have a sim card and the carplay connection/connectivity is much quicker. I wonder if it has anything to do with the sim?
You don’t but a lot of people really really like it. Like I say in the video, you can add most of the apps carplay has directly to the upgraded screen instead
So.. Are you going to give credit where's its due or just pass it off like you came up with this idea even though it was out for weeks before your video
Have you read the video description? Mitch Moen is a great resource. I did not ‘steal’ his idea. I wish people would just ask me where I got the idea. It is extremely unfortunate that this assumption is being made. In July, before I even knew about the Facebook support group, I was contacted by Mohammad Haris Sharif on Instagram. Within our chats; On July 27th he shared with me the GPS tap. He had performed it. He also shared with me some other modifications he’d performed while owning his screen. When I eventually found the Facebook group, I did see the parts that Mitch Moen was recommending to make the installation easier. This was helpful since I was getting frustrated with the search on various websites for cables and adapters that wanted far too much for shipping. I am sorry if Mitch and any of the people he has helped feel I am disrespecting his efforts. The truth is, somebody else shared the GPS Tap mod with me. Mitch’s pictures of the cables he used, helped me get the job done cheaper. Thank you Mitch. This is not the first GPS tap I have done either. Before UA-cam (only 5 years now) I installed a ‘carputer’ into a car and tapped into the coaxial gps cable it had for its antenna. This was a far more complicated install. Nothing was plug and play. I do have some skills and knowledge too. I really don’t know how else I can resolve the situation other than provide explanations on how I received an idea for a mod (this mod) when people ask me. I am sorry feelings may have been hurt. I am sorry that Mohammad Haris Sharif didn’t let more people know about his mod with the online community. It could have helped stop people from assuming the idea and execution of that idea only happened in a Facebook group. I thanked Mitch for his post in my video description and in several comments on this video. I don’t know what else I can do to resolve the controversy.
If you have the AUCAR adapters, you’ll need to add this pigtail to change the connector for the Z Innovations screen Coaxial Pigtail Cable adapter: amzn.to/3zWy37i

Thanks. I am learning ‘with’ you and I might as well share for those that are interested.
Thanks again this was very informative
Thank you Mr. Don. You’re a Beast. I just got my unit today and I didn’t know how I was gonna hook everything up. Thanks
My initial install video has more install details. Hopefully it helps

The GPS adapters will fit all of the similar GMC and Chevy trucks. The locations of the factory plugs can vary

Do you have a link to the aux cable?
I do not, sorry. It is a new option directly from AUCAR Auto
This may be a dumb question, but if I get a SIM card and only plan on using google maps & Waze apps for navigation do I need to change this gps cable?
No but it will be more accurate/responsive with a connected GPS antenna
Would have liked to have seen how you fished the gps cable behind the dash....

Do you know if the locations and style of plugs are the same on 2014-2018 silverados?
Location not sure. Plug color and style is likely the same. I am not 100% sure
Do you still have use of your sharkfin on the factory screen?
Yes
