A Tourist in East End Victorian London (The People of the Abyss)

- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- Witness a man's journey into the mysterious and dangerous East End. His friends warned him not to visit and certainly couldn’t perceive of any reason that an American would want to visit Victorian London's land of misery for himself. You will hear about his struggle to get there and his effort to report an honest account of the life of London’s poor by disguising himself in tattered old working-class clothes.

I love your channel and your works. I'd however, like to make a tiny suggestion. When referring to Jack London, try to call him mister London. Without full context, some of your quotes could be interpreted as the city of London taking a census interest in its poor, which couldn't be farther than the truth
I lived in a very small town - Hamlet - village
in Bavaria Germany in
the mid-20th century.
All of the streets were made from cobble
stones. Houses would erect a rod-iron platform atop there houses, - in hopes that storks would nest - and bring good health and luck to the inhabitants. We were surrounded by familiar German forests. Around 3 AM you could smell the baker making 'brochen' (something like that - it's been a long time).
I admit (I didn't get fed as I needed) late at night I would leave the Cellar -Keller in German and steal apples.
Even in the summer the temp. didn't get much beyond the young 70's.
Anyway, - I would ride my bike to school in the early cold 🌬 mornings.
My bicycle tires would bumpity-bump-bump-bu
on those old Roman stone streets (except in winter when you couldn't keep atop your bike to save your life).
When I'd reach the center of town (I'd always look up at the old clock tower to see if I was late - I always was).
But this is what reminded me of old London, - I would see older heavyset women - elbows on window sills looking out at goings-on from older second story houses.
I didn't appreciate it then.
So often it seems, - memories are dearer than experiences.
The story of your past memories and how they remind you of Victorian London was very interesting to read. Thank you for sharing.
Small things like that make up the beauty of ephemeral life
💀..@jackiereynolds2888..Ohhhmy goodness, Ms Reynolds, your Beautiful description of Your Childhood Home has enchanted me to my innermost Soul.. Gosh, I pray You won't think me too "presumptuous" when I say, how I should truly Love to hear more about Your Verry Charming "Growing up years", in Your Home-town, in Bavaria..!! Because, Darlin, You have captivated my interest, & imagination..!! ~Peace, KYL🥀
So glad I found this channel. I've been fascinated with the Victorian era for some time so it's nice to have a channel that tells first-hand experiences that I can listen to
I’m glad you found my channel. Lots more Victorian/Edwardian content planned.
@@FactFeast looking forward to it 👍
Heart of the then british empire , just shows where the money didn't go. The empire ,planned and fulfilled by the Establishment hundreds of years prior. They knew what they were doing ,they still do.
Just a heads-up that 'descent' is misspelled in the thumbnail. 👍
Great video as always - thanks! 😀
Thanks for watching! I appreciate your support.
Descent: to remove the odor of something.
“It is my belief, Watson, founded upon my experience, that the lowest and vilest alleys in London do not present a more dreadful record of sin than does the smiling and beautiful countryside.”
I had a college professor tell me decades ago that social mobility is just about gone in the US which angered me at the time but after many decades of observation I can see he was right. I also had a friend tell me wherever you find a lot of wealth, there will be deep poverty nearby. Again I thought it was not true, but it is.
Ah the ignorance, folly and arrogance of youth, lol 😜👍
Learn a trade/skill and stop allowing yourself to be fooled by the scam that is universities. If you aren’t in one of the STEM fields, there’s quite literally no reason to go college.
Wonderful selection of old photos and illustrations used in the video. Added much to the story.
Glad you enjoyed the atmosphere. Thank you!
I have this book . Its really like another world back then. We say there is poverty now, but this poverty was extreme then and nobody really cared at all , only a few philanthropists.
It's no mistake that Karl Marx did his research in England.
It was a different time to be alive
I feel blessed everyday I have a clean safe home, a stable income, excess food and anything else I NEED. There are still folks in the world who live like this and worse. It's unfortunate. The East End was really really abysmal though. Victorian London seemed like a world devoid of much societal compassion. The suffering of children bothers me more than anything else though.
The animal cruelty of the poor is a unique kind of evil.
@@walterkersting6238 Do you give money to the homeless???😳
I completely agree. Where so many of us are blessed, I feel for the ones who struggle; especially the children.
when you don't have and respect human rights in a society, you'll typically find animal cruelty.
These conditions are what you get when capitalism is allowed to run free.
First here, mind boggling. The past is really another country.
It's strange to think that this was only a handful of generations ago.
Go far enough back anywhere habitable and it literally was a different country.
Do you think that 'the classes' have disappeared, though?
Some areas of Glasgow were like this until the 60s
A different country filled with your distant relatives lol
I couldn't figure out why this was in my recommendations list. 2 minutes into the video I knew why !!
Now I'm working my way through all the amazing videos you've made !!
Thank you for your time and energy making all your wonderful videos !!
That’s great! It’s really nice to know that you found my channel and enjoy the content. Thank you. Lots more to come.
There is nothing, but nothing mysterious about poverty. Been there and done that! You would certainly think that any American could find enough poverty in his own country, so why on God's green earth go seek such in another country? I am an American, born and bred and I have read about the awful poverty here in that time period in this country and I really struggle with the idea of traveling to another country (albeit England) to want to see more poverty?? I dunno?!
a massive expansion of the British empire into places like South Africa huge in roads in technology and inventions that wealth remained with the few whilst the poor survived hour by hour day by day. The wealth of the empire never trickled down to the those who really needed yet without the poor there would have been no empire.
One reason might be to make his countrymen feel better about their tribulations and poverty.
A wish to prove that Britain's a sh**hole would be quite compelling.
@@curbyourshi1056 if you're not from Britain then your country must be a s**thole
This guy seems like the old timey version of travel bloggers who's whole thing is visiting poor countries and slums for views.
An absolutely brilliant book-in line with road to Wigan pier
One was 19-teens and one 1920s.
My english greatgrand parents were from Stepney east london around the 1880s ' 90s. They died from the TB while my great grandmother died of the spanish flu in 1918 aged 59. My grandmother ,one of her daughters lived till she was 100yrs and 6mnths old, bless her
Another fabulous video!! This was a very interesting take on class disparity. What valuable insight Mr. London has given us by this account!
Thank you! He has an engaging way of writing about his experiences.
Fascinating step into some else's shoes!
Glad you enjoyed it! That means a lot, thank you.
He needed to experience the feast of trotters, eel, and some grog, and then paying a small amount for shelter and a space on a bench for rope sleeping (sitting in your small place on a crowded bench while you and everyone else would hang over a rope and fall asleep).
you'll be pleased to here that this channel has a video on the very subject of "hangovers" and a journalist spending the night there, check it out
I'm starting to dislike your channel! You're giving me so much to wonder at, and research further...
I hope it inspires research in a good way - thank you for the compliment.
The first photo is actually a courtyard in Kensington in West London, the second is Dorset Street looking eastwards to Commercial Street, the original buildings both on the western end and the eastern end are the same as they were when Dorset Street was a very dangerous and very poor street.
The policeman who he stayed with was Sgt Thicke who was a well known member of the Metropolitan Police 'H' Division and was involved in the 1888 Jack the Ripper case (an was likely to be very friendly with the 'criminal elite' of the local area.. or in other words likely to have been corrupt..).
I've read the book and visited the area many times,(Itchy Park etc). It's a great book and very enlightening but he has a strange anti British attitude in it, in that he seems to think nothing like this existed in America. Many times he contrasts life in East London with the clean, healthy life you can have in the USA, whereas we know of the grinding poverty that also existed there.
Ottawa's 2021 east end is exactly like this. Mysterious. Beautiful. Haunting. Liminal. Inaccessible housing. This is such a poignant series. And that the people turn out to have good hearts there.
Read the book years ago..I consider it one of the best things he ever wrote. Thanks..you really bring his words to life.🇬🇧
Thank you! Glad I could bring the 'atmosphere' of his words to you.
@@FactFeast It was superb.

@@FactFeast Now you have to read the rest of it for us!
There is an ‘Eating Out in London’ (Coffeehouses) video on the channel from Jack London. More to come soon!
Me too.
I think it is sad that ways of doing things 100+ years ago are completely lost knowledge to the general population. If we ever had to go back and do things, we would have to rediscover them for ourselves. Then again my daughter thinks it strange that I didn't grow up with internet access at my fingertips. Good thing we have channels like this to showcase forgotten people in forgotten times.
When I was around 10 y.o in 1960, I couldn't imagine life without television. A friend's grandmother and aunt lived without it.
i often ask my dad what his life like in 80s,90s before internet in the rural provinces (we are from the philippines, south east asia we are behind in the west abit decades ago, im born Gen z 2000s kid) i love to look up life in the 20th century, their minddsets, cultures, trends, news, jobs and a glimpse to the past. i can laugh at my own little cousin (born 2010 and all thinks about youtubers as role models and pity on his dreams of materialism that his roblox game could land him millions without seeing the reality himself) i remember lost memories of days when GPS slowly got reintroduced in 2008, the age of 2000s internet when i wait long minutes to load and there are no Ads, playing in nokia phones of the snake or ball game, seeing old dial up payphones in the streets unused and side conversations i heard how lucky i was to experience to ride a "hightech" car at the time (front has Tv and radio) i remember the astonished look of my nanny back then who never knew life in the city, experiencing different foods while they were raised on the mountains/farmlands with towns still using bicycles and old folk talks, i had this culture shock when i visit my other relatives and one of them a teacher which is the mother of my cousin, who teaches in a old school (1-6 graders) changed their stance and i was met with curiosity of the local kids, they never seen me holding such high tech gadgets, wearing clothes that was considered "rich like" to them while their uniforms have nothing more broken sandals, few school supplies they lacked i let them borrow and amazed on when my aunt who welcomed me as a visitation student i joined the class lessons and answered their hardest questions, which is easy to me back home (this was elementary) they never knew what durian was but know it as "langka" or when i explained such lessons that was taught to me and compared it to them, my aunt even wished me before i go.. after i finish my previous grades (4th to 5th) she asked me rather than throw away my old books i should donate it to her and found out why that the lessons taught to them are out of time, last revised in the 80s textbooks they had and i realized my curiosity to feel what it lives like them ,kid me was fantasizing what would it be like if i could hang out and timetravel to the childhood of my father and family the time if i could get along them , explain how i live today compare to the. now i see it as similar to the school & out of the city life of our ancestral home that it felt like i truly moved back in time to experience such old customs still existing and in place. (truth be told if i were to bring a hersheys chocolate bar they taught im some rich kid but i knew when i understand them more they wrere the most determined, kind and hardworkers in their future and im not sure what happened to them now i last visited them in 2009 or 2011s)
THIS IS THE LIFE MOGG WOULD LIKE TO RETURN TO..... Including bringing back the workhouses for poor people.
That's really unfair, and obviously
Reinforces your politics.
Jacob is heavily involved in charity work, not just lip service or because its a way of improving his image
But because he is that man.
Nothing has changed
I have become obsessed with this channel, keep it up!!
I’ll keep the content coming!
@@FactFeast yay!
It perplexes me still that extreme poverty is still a huge problem in most first world countries. I was in DC two weeks ago and it didn't take long for you to stumble into troubled areas with swaths of homeless and near homeless people trying to make their way. You could see the White House at certain points in those areas, that's how close you were. Embarrassing a country so rich and powerful can't even address or at least remedy these problems.
Anyway great video.
Well many of the people that end up in those situations are there as a result of serve mental illness and/or drug addiction (obviously not all, but a considerable percentage). Even if you were to offer them treatment, there is no way to force them to stay (like they did with mental asylums and we all know how well that went). It’s a very unfortunate situation that I haven’t really seen a good solution for it.
It's a different poverty, one caused by mental health problems and addiction. Nobody in the western world is starving and homeless through lack of work anymore like this story, we have social safety nets now for those out of work. Those homeless you see on the streets today mostly have mental health problems and are self-treating them with alcohol and drugs and thus have no money for homes or food.
I love your accent and voice mate I assume it is mostly Irish but it has a nice hint of a few different accents. Very cool!
Really nice to know you like the narration. Thank you!

Thanks for directing me to this video from the comments of another. You've done a fine job with this, and I think it smart that you skipped trying to capture the California American accent that Mr. London would have had, and read the narrative in your own voice.

The most important factor in a homeless disguise is to walk like a fool.
All the people in America complaing and demanding free money from the goverment have no idea what "being destitue" is really like this is a fair depiction of it. No saftey net and the only way out was death. We are all very lucky to live in this country and if you doubt that simpley look how many people want to immigrate here legally or not, they are not trying to get to say russia or Afghanistan or somalia so enjoy your holiday and be grateful that you live here.
Nobody in America is demanding free money from the government. That’s a ridiculous lie.
