I don't understand why a fiction writer doesn't need a platform? They can be an obscure debut writer and still get representation.
I can feel like a bummer for sure. Fiction sells better with a platform, too, though--since most of us want our books to sell well, it doesn't hurt to build a community no matter what type of book you're writing!
