I have a problem running into skin tones and yellows for my coloring books I always run into it and your right you can get most of them in set I see that and it's a problem for most colorist
I did sharpen them before trying to use them. Still had issues with 3-4 of the Derwent Pastel Pencils. Of the ones I ordered, the Raspberry is still giving me issues, so I'm just going to assume it's the particular formula of that pencil causing problems.
I got a Black Widow complete set (156?) swatch cards from an Etsy store and completed them and put on a ring. I want to do this for at least Prismas, Polys, and also Inktense. I also covered with packaging tape, (the broke person's form of laminating, lol) As for your marker situation, invest in Blick brush markers and you can replace individuals. I have NO INTEREST in super expensive Copics. Their refills got SMALLER and priced the same (or more).

New pencils you have to sharpen before drawing with them,then you will have no problems with scratches 😁
